Stable with a good database and a good interface
We primarily use the solution to deal with problems in the production environment For us, the database is the most useful feature. The interface is great. We don't find the pricing to be too bad. The initial setup was fairly easy. I'm not sure how to improve the solution. It currently has all of…

Root cause analysis has become possible but complex setup and agent issues still slow investigations
The limitations I notice include the instability of the agent, which crashes, and the application itself consuming memory under heavy loads. Additionally, the customizations are not easy to build, especially for new parsers and functionalities that are just supported out-of-the-box. Splunk AppDynamics needs to be more user-friendly so that even someone who does not know what is happening should be able to easily find the root cause of issues, as the tool is specifically designed for application developers, not from a user perspective for problem identification. My experience with the application performance monitoring capabilities of Splunk AppDynamics indicates that it is complex. The correlation from the front end to the back end is not working properly. In an application using the EUM feature and having the app agent, the app agent gives me the transaction data, but the EUM data does not correlate to the backend transactions, and I do not know why. It can be very complex to find the root cause in those scenarios, as there is a disparity in metrics, making it challenging. Even though Splunk AppDynamics is trying, my very large environment presents hurdles that medium-scale organizations might not experience. After spending around three to four years trying to get value from it, I still feel a lack of satisfaction. To get closer to a rating of 10 in the future, I would like to see whatever features are being provided made to work, particularly in large environments. Splunk AppDynamics claims it can do 100 things, but if those things are not functioning cohesively, it is ineffective. Instead of offering 100 features that do not work together, it would be better to focus on a smaller set of features that operate effectively. Changes happen daily with new applications and technologies, and Splunk AppDynamics needs to adapt more swiftly to keep up. The feature that helps detect and protect against vulnerabilities does raise concerns. I experience vulnerabilities in Splunk AppDynamics that I communicate to support for fixes, and they often respond by indicating that some fixes are available in new versions. This creates a continuous cycle of raising issues and waiting for resolutions through version updates.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is stable, reliable, and doesn't have any bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze."
"The initial setup was fairly easy."
"The customer service and support are helpful and responsive."
"The most valuable feature is just the sheer visibility it gives us, especially being on the performance team."
"We have used technical support many times, we have created so many tickets, and they're really good; the response is really very fast, which is the one thing I like about the tech support."
"What I like most about AppDynamics Server Monitoring is that it's easy to manipulate and easy to implement."
"The flow map is very valuable to us. Before we installed APM, we had no idea how our application looked."
"This product has improved the performance management of our applications before deploying them to the end user."
"The solution helps us save a lot of time on certain tasks."
"As a general rule, though, AppDynamics is something that we really can't operate without; even in the case of when we had a pretty big network outage earlier this year, where we weren't able to see the controller from our desks."

Cons

"There are certain aspects of the configuration that could be simplified a bit."
"One thing for which we didn't get a clear answer is how taxing or how much overhead it can create on a database."
"The cost for AppDynamics is becoming a challenge, as well as the apparent AppDynamics move from a Magic Quadrant point of view."
"Its resiliency can be improved. We're told that the best we can do with an on-prem solution is to have a hot standby that requires a manual switchover. So, it is a do-it-yourself Ikea model of maintaining data consistency between two servers, without having low balance or failover considerations for an on-prem solution."
"I would like to see something that lets me set real dollar figures, not just to outages, but to the solutions as well... when I'm looking at problems and have found a problem that I know I need to address. I could flag it off and have AppDynamics estimate how long a person would have taken to find that without it. That would give me a lot of leverage for justifying the existence of APM, which I really need."
"We would like to be able to easily use this solution to monitor our Java script based browsers, which are currently blocked by the security settings."
"The discovery is acceptable, however, users need to configure many things if they want good discovery."
"I would like to see more artificial intelligence and machine learning brought in to monitor the statement and payment sum issues we have."
"AppDynamics scaled well up to around 3,000 agents. The performance deteriorated after that, while Dynatrace could support more than 10,000 agents. We were surprised that AppDynamics' scalability is not so good."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"As a technical person, and as an application development team, they all understand that this is the right tool for us. But when it comes to budget and financial matters, it takes days and weeks to convince upper management to buy this tool. So they should do something more on licensing costs."
"AppDynamics offers a yearly basis license."
"My understanding is that the price of this solution is quite high, compared to other products."
"Purchasing the product through the AWS Marketplace was good."
"There is a license to use this solution. However, the clients pay for the licenses we are the service provider."
"It could be a bit lower, but looking at the scalability, functionality, and other things, you can understand why AppDynamics is so expensive as compared to some of the cheaper products that don't have that full single pane of glass they've got. Dynatrace has got three different elements that you need to log into just to get a full view, which is not so good, and because of that, it is a bit cheaper."
"Because it is priced per JVM, the price can increase pretty fast, into the millions. We have had challenges because we had to justify the price to our clients, as well, when we are putting in certain tools."
"The product is a bit expensive compared to other tools."
