Helps design blueprints in a cloud environment but the support is a major problem
One of the major problems is that support is not so good. I used to have a support expert in Spain but they left two years ago. BMC doesn't invest a lot in network automation but network automation is a major point in CLM. There aren't any experts here in Europe, maybe they have in America, I don't know. The main problem is the support in Europe. We had a lot of problems with the people who got put on our cases. The agents that we were assigned to were not so capable. They wanted to replicate the problem. If you have an incident, it takes a lot of time to troubleshoot the problem. The incident support is not so good. The technicians don't know the platform well. BMC doesn't want to invest in CLM. Two years ago we had a lot of problems. Maybe BMC realized that CLM is an end of life product.

Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Assesses change impact or completes an audit using multiple dashboard views."
"Supports unattended installs and image-based, script-based, or template-based provisioning."
"We have many regions where more than 10000 servers are deployed, so it helps in patching and hardening of servers."
"By allowing end users to request their own services, the request process for systems is much quicker and more accurate."
"Allowing systems to be provisioned in a wide range of environments, such as Azure, AWS, or on-premise, reduces the level of training required as well as creates consistency across the board."
"Total build time has been reduced from four weeks to one week, then later to 24 hours."
"Automates Java EE Application Deployment from an SCM system."
"It's helped us with our automation."
"SolarWinds NPM has specific modules for monitoring different network capabilities, which provides rich features for carrying out specific tasks."
"SolarWinds makes a great product and their support is second to none!"
"The ability to customize the views and dashboards is nice, and SolarWinds also allows us to access the data via the API, which is probably the feature I liked the most."
"Can easily be interconnected with other management systems."
"It did a good job of the collection and then an investigation of the net flow of information for understanding the applications that were being used at certain locations."
"Having all 3 products tied together gives me the data I need to accurately pinpoint a problem within moments, instead of collating data from various applications and servers."
"There are a lot of options for customization of the dashboard, alerts, and reports."
"One of my clients is a bank; SolarWinds is primarily used in banking to limit network downtime to less than one or two minutes, with all the ATMs connected so the bank can respond quickly when the network is down."

Cons

"It was complex as it does not include a good, extensive feasibility and compatibility guide."
"Needs integrations with other providers to provide a custom public cloud environment."
"The installation and configuration can be tricky due to it being built on Remedy."
"Going to BMC for PS is not at all recommended from my experience."
"One of the major problems is that support is not so good."
"The dashboard of the solution is an area with certain shortcomings that need improvement."
"Time: A worldwide deployment can be confusing for dispersed users with non-local times. Each node should have a local time (with summer offset if appropriate) & each user should view & report in their local time."
"There have been some versions that have had stability issues, but the current version seems pretty stable."
"An area for improvement in SolarWinds NPM is the short retention period. Currently, it's just for seven days of data, which is very low, making it hard for my organization to keep that data. SolarWinds recommended a seven-day retention period, but my organization needs a fourteen-day data retention period. Hence, I'd like an increase in the retention period or the database limit in SolarWinds NPM because you can't go back to the data for any investigation if seven days have passed. Another area for improvement in SolarWinds NPM is the database, which needs to be a bit more mature. I want a modified database in the next release of SolarWinds NPM. I'd also like more options added to groups because, currently, it's very limited."
"The integration with video apps could be better."
"The only thing that can be improved is to continually add to the existing capabilities of the product."
"It would be good to have high security."
"If we go for the NT license, then we have to purchase the NPM, Network Performance Monitor; that is a dependency."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"There's standard licensing, and then it depends on the size of the customer."
"The solution can become very expensive and commercially not viable in countries, such as India."
"It is expensive."
"We have a perpetual license for this solution, and my impression is that this solution is cheap."
"The licensing is based on the number of nodes, interfaces, and volumes."
"The pricing needs to be improved. It is too high. One full engine costs around $10 000, which is why we don't have high availability right now."
"We pay approximately $700 per year for renewal of the license."
"We pay approximately $4,000 annually for SolarWinds NPM. There are no additional fees required other than the standard fees."
