What are the differences between SonarQube and CAST AIP?

Hi Joe - SonarQube is essentially a static code quality tool and has multiple versions (community is free and then we have developer, enterprise, and data center versions which are paid). As per the latest branding from CAST, they don't market AIP as a separate product and are bundled with CAST Imaging. CAST AIP is used to onboard the code base and perform analysis and the actual products are Imaging for architecture analysis and health, engineering, and security dashboards. The dashboards in CAST are richer and have more security features compared to SonarQube. Also, CAST does not have any free community version available. Both of them do static code analysis and do not look at run time code.

The overall coverage of rules could be improved in the CAST Application Intelligence Platform because it does not cater to or cover all. For example, 2022 CWE coverage is still not available in the CAST Application Intelligence Platform. The solution also covers some NIST rules, but it does not cater to all rules. An additional feature I'd like to see in the next update of the CAST Application Intelligence Platform is for it to provide source code developer and contributor details, especially information on which areas of code were touched. This would be a good insight as the CAST Application Intelligence Platform looks into the source code.

Automated code checks have improved quality gates and prevent weak code from reaching production

SonarQube could improve by reducing false positives in its static code analysis; while its detection capabilities are strong, some findings require manual verification, increasing developers' workload. More accurate analysis would enhance productivity, and SonarQube would benefit from enhanced AI-powered recommendations for fixing issues. For instance, in our pipeline, if it fails during SonarQube stage, we could check the dashboard for identified issues involving code smells, bugs, or duplicacy. An AI feature should be integrated into SonarQube to resolve issues quickly; optimizing scanning performance for very large repositories and providing faster analysis times would enhance the developer experience, especially in large code bases with frequent commits. For anyone planning to implement SonarQube, I advise starting by defining coding standards first and integrating Quality Gates into the pipeline. You can customize quality profiles to match project requirements; rather than relying entirely on default rules, you can adjust settings for stronger detection and enforcement. Organizations with advanced security, branch analysis, and governance features might consider commercial editions based on their needs.

Below that, the code cannot be promoted to a further environment, it should be in a development environment only. So the checks are there, and SonarQube will provide that increase. It also provides suggestions on how the code can be fixed and methods of going about this, without allowing hackers to exploit the code. Another valuable feature is that it is tightly integrated with third-party tools. For example, we can see the SonarQube metrics in Bitbucket, the code repository. Once I raise the full request, the developer, team lead, or even the delivery lead can see the code quality metrics of the deliverable so that they can make a decision. SonarQube will also cover all of the top OWASP vulnerabilities, however it doesn't have penetration testing or hacker testing. We use other tools, like Checkmarx, to do penetration testing from the outside."

My company works with individual vendors, so pricing is on a case-to-case basis, but the vendors give specialized pricing because of the enterprise deployment, though my team is aware of product pricing based on lines of code, based on the number of applications, etc., I'm unable to give the exact licensing costs of the CAST Application Intelligence Platform. My company doesn't have to pay extra for some features or services because all are included as part of the enterprise license. On a scale of one to five, with five being very cheap and one being very expensive, I would rate the CAST Application Intelligence Platform as three out of five."
