Has improved incident response with better root cause visibility and supports flexible on-call scheduling
Datadog needs to introduce more hard limits to cost. If we see a huge log spike, administrators should have more control over what happens to save costs. If a service starts logging extensively, I want the ability to automatically direct that log into the cheapest log bucket. This should be the case with many offerings. If we're seeing too much APM, we need to be aware of it and able to stop it rather than having administrators reach out to specific teams. Datadog has become significantly slower over the last year. They could improve performance at the risk of slowing down feature work. More resources need to go into Fleet Automation because we face many problems with things such as the Ansible role to install Datadog in non-containerized hosts. We mainly want to see performance improvements, less time spent looking at costs, the ability to trust that costs will stay reasonable, and an easier way to manage our agents. It is such a powerful tool with much potential on the horizon, but cost control, performance, and agent management need improvement. The main issues are with the administrative side rather than the actual application.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The Centerity gives us exactly what we need from performance system monitoring."
"The machine learning feature is valuable."
"Centerity is much more than a monitoring tool — it’s a unified, end-to-end, enterprise-class and multi-tenanted AIOps Platform that is purpose-built to help MSPs and data-centers deliver the highest levels of up-time and performance."
"The most valuable feature is the dashboards that are provided out of the box, as well as ones we were able to configure."
"The service catalog helped improve our organization by giving a good view of the flow for our microservices applications."
"It brings in observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities - all of which we need to operate at scale."
"When an alert fires, our on-call engineer can see the infrastructure metric spike (like CPU), pivot directly to the application traces (APM) running on that host, and see the exact, correlated logs from the services causing the problem—all in one place."
"By leveraging AWS's functionality, we have increased our application's security and sped up the deployment process."
"The tool's deployment is easy."
"Since using Datadog, it has positively impacted our organization by giving us a one-stop shop for multiple applications and services that we can analyze in one spot."
"Overall, it has improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime by enabling quicker responses during incidents."

Cons

"The GUI must be improved. Graphs must be changed including high level maps"
"They can improve the functionality that provides some numbers related to the behavior of the metrics."
"One of the major improvements should be it implementation as a SaaS"
"I'd like to see more flexibility in the customization and they have a few settings which need to be changed but we are unable to make those changes as users or as the administrator."
"We need to learn more about the session reply feature inside of DD."
"Datadog could always lower the price!"
"There are some areas on log filtering screens where the user interface can take some getting used to."
"One major drawback of Datadog is the cost. Sometimes we set up flows in place to monitor resources that end up logging more than we thought, and the bill is too high."
"The ease of implementation was a bit difficult for us for the database servers where we have different kinds of databases. We needed different kinds of agents to be installed, and that was a bit tricky for us."
"While the documentation is very good, there are areas that need a lot of focus to pick up on the key details."
"Once Datadog has gained wide adoption, it can often be overwhelming to both know and understand where to go to find answers to questions."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Licensing is based on the retention period of logs and metrics."
"It has a module-based pricing model."
"At my last company, we did see ROI, specifically around response time. We could get to mission critical things that were down and losing revenue on immediately. So, the product paid itself back."
"The pricing came up a bit compared to their competitors. It is not that the price has risen, but that the competitors have gone down. They keep adding more features that I would have expected to be baked in at a more nominal price. I have been increasingly dissatisfied with the pricing, but not enough to jump ship."
"Pricing seems reasonable. It depends on the size of your organization, the size of your infrastructure, and what portion of your overall business costs go toward infrastructure."
"Pricing is somewhat affordable compared to other solutions but in order to really lower the costs of other products you need to plan very carefully your resources usage, otherwise, it can get expensive real quick."
"The solution is fairly priced but history and log storage can get costly depending on your needs."
"The price of Datadog is reasonable. Other solutions are more expensive, such as AppDynamics."
