In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Good intrusion prevention, firewall, and VPN capabilities
Check Point Power-1 (EOL) has reached the end of its useful life, yet at the time, they could to make some changes such as: * Integration in the cloud. It is the new trend, however, Check Point has already contemplated this and already has its own cloud device. * Automation. As the automatic creation and application of policies, this would have been very beneficial. * Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time. They must also make some improvements in their support departments since they do not comply with the SLAs that they provide.

Faced hardware limitations and setup challenges but have improved network protection over time
I spent much time finding exact firmware on Aruba which was working with these guns, but it is not optimal because it is not the latest version, so there could be potential security problems. We decided to replace those access points with another one. I personally have trouble because I don't know the exact life cycle of Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes. I don't know if the life of boxes is five years or something else; we moved from our previous company, which sold us to other companies. Before 10 years, we had a special department that took care of core networks, including firewalls. After that, this responsibility fell to me and my colleague. It is not easy to set up these Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes properly because we didn't have previous experience with this kind of solution. At first, we set up only a few rules that were not secure enough, and over a couple of years, we improved the settings and security of these Fortinet FortiGate-VM boxes. Currently, I have one Fortinet FortiGate-VM that needs to be replaced next year, and this box is not so powerful, so I need to redirect some traffic to another Fortinet FortiGate-VM. It is stable, but because the CPU processor of this box is not powerful, I need to redirect some traffic to another box. In the future, I need to choose a higher-level box to prevent potential troubles with the power of this box.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We receive substantial help from Fortinet, which is very valuable as they assist us in choosing the right solutions. If we need configuration assistance, they can send specialists who help design the solution."
"The pipe filter application is an outstanding feature."
"I'm pretty happy with its reliability. It is also very scalable."
"The main benefit is the grouping of our security monitoring, as I have all of my solutions from the same brand, Fortinet, with only one console and one dashboard for all the security incidents that occur on the network."
"We are happy to use this product."
"We have received a very good ROI; it has provided significant time savings of almost 20-25%."
"I appreciate the ease of use, ease of setup, and the different abilities it has; I have been very pleased with it over SonicWall, the interface of Fortinet FortiGate is a lot easier to use and more robust, plus their VPN option is much better."
"It is a good source for firewall protection."
"In my opinion it is right product at enterprise level network to protect the user and server from external and internal threats and attacks"
"The VPN allows users to connect remotely and securely."
"It is very useful to make lists for rules and prepare firewall rules."
"Using this product protects our company from attacks that come from outside of our network, and at the same time, we get better speed and performance when connecting to the internet."
"Overall, this is a good product with good features and priced well compared to others."
"There is an interesting possibility of building a tunnel to a firewall from access points. We use this feature for small branch offices with one to two employees with access to central RDP servers."
"The most valuable features are the SD-WAN and the web filtering applications control."
"The EPM bundle is a good feature."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is the V-Scanner which is the monitoring software, as we are able to closely monitor the usages of individual users and see their usage habits and other items, including the data itself, which gives us quite a bit of visibility."
"An enhanced security solution for any kind of alert that we have configured."

Cons

"I am looking to implement key authentication for admin access for the Fortinet product."
"The FortiGate series does not have that much troubleshooting and network testing features in its GUI, hence we’ll definitely be looking for some add-on features in near future."
"It needs more available central management."
"The price could be improved."
"Performance and technical support are the main issues with this solution."
"One drawback of Fortinet FortiGate is that they provide two types of models: one with a hard disk and another without. The model without a hard disk has very low ROM where you can store very few logs, after which you need to upload it to the cloud or purchase a firewall with SSD. That's the only drawback."
"There was a hardware limitation, affecting scalability."
"I have faced challenges related to support, as I have encountered issues where support engineers are not aligned within the time frame, and sometimes they request multiple logs unnecessarily, causing delays and leaving a bad impression on my end users."
"I have to pay Check Point for every new service I integrate in the firewall and it also has license related issue which needs to renew every years."
"Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time."
"The interface needs to be updated and simplified."
"We have had some issues with connecting to the VPN from home after firmware updates, which could be an area for improvement."
"The tech support calls were not the best and could be improved. There have been times when we felt as if we knew more about the device than the support person on the phone."
"They could provide more integration options with different platforms."
"It should have the SD-WAN feature. This would increase the number of features that are available in the box."
"The price is problematic."
"Sizing can be challenging for customers interested in using Fortinet FortiGate-VM."
"The security of the solution could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's not the cheapest, but it's value for money. Given everything we've got out of it: the DMZ port, the VPN, and the high availability, it's a pretty reasonable price."
"FortiGate SWG is reasonably priced."
"The pricing is based on a licensing model for each IPS in your environment."
"Their licensing costs are annual. The UTM feature license along with their support is called FortiCare. We include that as a part of the annual maintenance cost. Palo Alto or Juniper also have an annual subscription charge for UTM. Price, of course, can always be more competitive, but it is not the most expensive product. The price-performance ratio is quite high for FortiGate."
"FortiGate's pricing falls within the mid-range when compared to other leading firewall solutions."
"Licensing for Fortinet FortiGate is on a yearly basis. Pricing for it is a bit high. It could be cheaper."
"The price is really low. It's cheap in comparison to the cost of Cisco or CheckPoint, for example."
"Pricing for this product is comparatively lower than other products. It's an affordable solution, but when expanding the number of users, they'll ask you to replace the model, so that's an added cost."
Information not available
"There is a need to make payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution."
"I rate the product price a three on a scale of one to ten, where one is a high price, and ten is a low price."
"We are on an annual license for this solution and it could be cheaper."
"The best part of Fortinet is the license is bundled together, so it is easy to use and apply."
"There is a support fee that can be bought on a yearly or two-yearly basis. I don't think they do five years. The best benefit is that the same pricing is guaranteed for that duration. If you can afford it, I would recommend using the longest possible time span."
"It is a medium-priced product."
"There should be a reduction in the setup price and licensing costs."
"There is no additional cost. Once you get the licensing fee, you're good."
