Enables customers to manage security effortlessly with intuitive features and easy integration
In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Advanced threat prevention has protected our perimeter and simplifies daily security operations
Check Point Quantum Force (NGFW) can be improved in several areas. First, the interface could be a little more intuitive for new users. The Smart Console is powerful, but it has a steep learning curve when you start using it. Some simple functions for common tasks would help. Second, the initial setup and configuration take quite a bit of time and expertise. It would be helpful if there were more guides, wizards, or templates to speed that up. Third, the price model could be more transparent and flexible. The license cost can add up quickly, specifically when you want to add more advanced features. Finally, I would appreciate seeing better integration with some third-party security tools we use. Right now, we have to do a lot of manual work to make everything talk to each other. Overall, these are minor things. The core product is really solid and does what it is supposed to do very well. The documentation could be more comprehensive in some areas. When we run into issues, the documentation does not have clear answers, so we end up contacting support. Speaking of support, the response time could be faster sometimes. We have had cases where we need help with a certain security issue, and it takes longer than we would prefer to get a response. As for features, it would be nice to have more general reporting options so we can customize reports for different teams and stakeholders without having to do manual work afterward. One more thing, better mobile access to the dashboard would be helpful. Sometimes we need to check on security alerts when we are away from the office, and the mobile experience is not as smooth as it could be. Again, these are improvements that would make it even better, not issues with the core product itself.

Great firewalls, VPN, and Intrusion prevention capabilities
Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management. Another point is to improve the technical support provided by Check Point UTM-1. Although the company offers different standards, including basic and premium, by mail and by telephone, they present a very large deficiency in the time it takes to comply with the provisions of the SLA. Coordinating a meeting is complicated by the schedules. The documentation should also be improved by having it unified.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I find Fortinet FortiGate to be quite stable, as I have never heard of any issues where they broke or malfunctioned; they are always working."
"The features that prevent internet connections, the filtering are the most valuable because we did not have any internet protection before."
"It is easy to use and update the software version. It is also useful for integration with other Fortinet products, because my office and company use Fortinet solutions."
"Using the FortiGate security solution provides comprehensive visibility and advanced layer 7 security, including threat protection, intrusion prevention, web filtering, and application control."
"If you need real and effective security for your network, do not hesitate to buy a Fortigate appliance."
"The solution is user-friendly and easy to operate."
"In terms of security, Fortinet FortiGate SWG is superior compared to Cisco."
"When it comes to firewall enterprise security and email security, this solution is at the top."
"As with any firewall, IPSEC VPN is the critical functionality. Not every organization has the budget to implement MPLS or SD-WAN, which makes IPSEC the go-to for site-to-site connectivity."
"The failover from one device to the other has been seamless and we find that we do not lose ongoing SIP calls or Teams chats."
"It also gives us a single console for everything. Rather than having one device for URL filtering and a different device as a firewall, this gives us everything in one place."
"R80 management has improved and made the product more comfortable for IT people to use."
"The management platform and the dashboard, the graphical user interface, is one of the best, if not the best, in the business. It's the most intuitive and it's really user-friendly in day-to-day operations."
"The product offers excellent security and how open they are with new risks and new vulnerabilities is very helpful in the task of keeping our company safe from malicious attacks."
"We have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars with VSX."
"It is always on the top of the list of best firewall solutions."
"The most important features are performance and ease of management."
"The most outstanding feature is being able to centralize each of the functions in a single device."
"It safeguards against cyber attacks."
"This is my favorite product that I use, and I think it's one of the best in the world."
"Since I have installed the solution everything is working very great."
"Check Point has been in the security industry for so long that it has evolved different solutions and technologies."
"The filtering was very good."
"The ability to create a central database for objects (sources, destinations, services, etc.), which can be used in several different policies, and the possibility of browsing all logs (FW, IPs, identity awareness, etc.) from all the gateways from a unique screen are big pluses."

Cons

"The graphical user interface of Fortinet FortiGate SWG is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"The captive portal could be improved."
"The only challenge with Fortinet FortiGate is the pricing model."
"The user interface of the Fortinet FortiGate management console could be more intuitive and user-friendly, and the log analysis and reporting features could be enhanced to provide more flexibility and customizable insights."
"The Web-filter in this solution is not very good."
"Quality control on their firmware versions needs improvement. When they introduce new firmware, there tend to be bugs."
"We had some issues with the local support, particularly with regard to purchasing the subscription."
"The search tool needs improvement."
"It took so many weeks to migrate our old firewall to Check Point after we did internal and external assessments on earlier setups and enabled multiple security features."
"Check Point NGFW should improve its user interface to make it more user-friendly and intuitive."
"It could be more stable and scalable. Check Point price and support could be better."
"The Antivirus feature is something that could be improved. We don't get much from the Antivirus update in comparison to their competitor's firewalls. It needs to be more advanced because Check Point is nowadays sent all over the world. Therefore, the Antivirus feature should be of very good quality and cover all virus checks. I would also like the Antivirus updates to be more frequent."
"I think the price of this product could be improved - other solutions are cheaper in comparison."
"Debugging could be improved when compared to the competition."
"Check Point is not a cheap solution and it's always painful to see exactly how much we need to spend on this."
"Check Point's support, at all levels, needs a complete overhaul."
"Technical support was very bad because the supplier who sold it to us, wasn't very supportive, and he wouldn't giving us direct links to the OEM."
"Customer service is definitely degrading, according to me."
"The solution should be more user-friendly."
"Customer service is not their strong suite. It takes a lot of time until they fix anything, and it can be better to try and fix the issue without them."
"The entire GUI, look and feel of the application."
"I am not able to see a demo."
"Specifically on the user experience, sometimes the set up of things, such as the VPN SSL, takes a lot of time to load and a lot of time to get up and running on every session."
"The interface needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"A year or two years back, its price was competitive and reasonable. That was one of the reasons that people easily switched to Fortinet. Over the last two years, the prices have increased drastically. However, the prices of others have also increased. An advantage is there from the price point but not as much as it was previously."
"I do not have first-hand experience with the rice of Fortinet FortiGate, but I have heard the price was reasonable."
"Its price is good."
"The product is expensive. I rate its pricing a six out of ten."
"Its pricing is fine. It is on a yearly basis. Other than the licensing fee, there is no extra fee."
"FortiGate SWG is a cost-effective solution well-suited for organisations of all sizes."
"It is a cost-effective solution that meets the user's needs."
"If you are looking for a quality product, it will come at a higher price. Expecting them to be significantly cheaper is unrealistic. In terms of pricing, it is a bit costly. However, the functionality and support offered are worth it."
"The pricing and licensing are expensive. If you compare it with Fortinet, then it is cheaper on a yearly basis. However, Check Point is the most expensive firewall right now in terms of licenses and its appliance. My recommendation is if you want a long-term investment, then you should use an open server. If you use an open server, then the latency is really low. If you pay for a full appliance, it's more expensive."
"In terms of quality versus price, Check Point is very balanced."
"The price is high in comparison to other solutions."
"We pay $5,000-$6,000 a year."
"The pricing is a bit high, but obviously it gives you advanced features. If you want to buy the best thing on the market, you have to pay extra money."
"They offered more features for a lower cost than competitors, and the licensing model was easy to understand."
"I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten. It costs around 100,000-200,000 dollars per month. Besides standard licensing fees, we paid extra for enterprise-level premium support. There were also onboarding costs factored in. These additional costs made it more expensive overall. The total cost was around 100,000 dollars, which was challenging for our budget. Check Point was also pricey, not much different from Palo Alto Networks. However, we decided switching to Check Point was better because it offered more capabilities for a similar price."
"The price could be decreased, because the competitors of Check Point Firewall are giving lower prices in comparison."
"The pricing is too high."
"This cost is between 3,000 and 5,000 euros per year, so some other solutions are cheaper and the pricing should be improved."
