Great firewalls, VPN, and Intrusion prevention capabilities
Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management. Another point is to improve the technical support provided by Check Point UTM-1. Although the company offers different standards, including basic and premium, by mail and by telephone, they present a very large deficiency in the time it takes to comply with the provisions of the SLA. Coordinating a meeting is complicated by the schedules. The documentation should also be improved by having it unified.

In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Firewalls help us a lot in controlling traffic on our network and preventing unauthorized access."
"Since I have installed the solution everything is working very great."
"It has given us the ability to securely connect remote office sites to our Core Data Network over ISP DPLC Circuits."
"The ability to create a central database for objects (sources, destinations, services, etc.), which can be used in several different policies, and the possibility of browsing all logs (FW, IPs, identity awareness, etc.) from all the gateways from a unique screen are big pluses."
"It provides visibility and drives organizational security."
"Check Point is not cheap when compared to other solutions, but it provides high level security, and as an organization we are fully satisfied with this product."
"This is my favorite product that I use, and I think it's one of the best in the world."
"As a security information analyst, it helps me to see information in a very clear way."
"Fortinet FortiGate has positively impacted our organization by preventing hackers from accessing our network."
"The ROI is great, as these boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive."
"The solution is stable."
"The product is very user-friendly, it is quite scalable, I love the interface, the power is great, and I have a limited embedded team in IT with one man on the team for 1,000 users who can manage all the infrastructure due to the fact that the console is very easy, and the people are very happy with the results pertaining to that interface."
"The installation was super easy, we were up and running in less than 50 minutes."
"It is a fantastic product, it fits the customer requirements very well, and the vendor is great."
"We are very satisfied with this product."
"This solution has helped us have control over our network."

Cons

"While the technical support is good, the Indian level technical support could use an upgrade."
"Specifically on the user experience, sometimes the set up of things, such as the VPN SSL, takes a lot of time to load and a lot of time to get up and running on every session."
"Customer service is definitely degrading, according to me."
"Yes, about once a year we have a catastrophic failure. It's pretty random."
"As we don't have a representative of Check Point supplier in our country, this makes it very difficult when we have some issues to resolve."
"The pricing is too high."
"The physical memory is insufficient for installing policies and some other operations."
"Customer Service: Horrible. It takes them days, sometimes weeks, until they try to help, and then they don't help enough."
"In their datasheet, they put the throughput as huge, but once you enable all the features of the box, the performance is impacted dramatically."
"Fortinet can add some Machine Learning and AI to improve its accuracy and give it an edge on IPS detection and protection."
"The customization is a little bit difficult because we have to customize everything."
"The licensing model and pricing need improvement."
"Before version 6.0, FortiGate's firewall performed well enough, but lately, they've introduced so many features. After that, its stability has been somewhat lacking."
"The support costs and licensing are sometimes so expensive."
"My only complaint about FortiGate is a lack of QinQ VLAN tunneling. I haven't found this feature in any Fortinet product. You can do this on all Cisco routers, including the smaller models. However, QinQ isn't available on the biggest, most expensive Fortinet units. They still don't have that. I think now we're on software version 6.0, and they still haven't found a solution for QinQ. It isn't a dealbreaker, but that's my main complaint."
"Customer support needs improvement. I have had to take the direct internal sources, such as sales contacts, and after that I rarely see support response."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is too high."
"This cost is between 3,000 and 5,000 euros per year, so some other solutions are cheaper and the pricing should be improved."
"Pricing for Fortinet FortiGate SWG is more suitable for enterprise or large-sized organizations because they are the ones who can afford it versus small and medium-sized organizations."
"It is a cost-effective solution that meets the user's needs."
"The solution is cheap."
"Its pricing is fine. It is on a yearly basis. Other than the licensing fee, there is no extra fee."
"The solution could be better priced."
"It is quite affordable for our customers. There is a separate cost for IPS, antivirus, web filtering, and other features. They have a great choice of licenses. You can go for the license that you want, which is quite useful."
"Fortinet has more device options that are affordable for small businesses than Palo Alto, and its enterprise-level models are also cheaper. Palo Alto also has a separate license for VPN connections and SD-WAN, but FortiGate offers these features standard."
"Their licensing costs are annual. The UTM feature license along with their support is called FortiCare. We include that as a part of the annual maintenance cost. Palo Alto or Juniper also have an annual subscription charge for UTM. Price, of course, can always be more competitive, but it is not the most expensive product. The price-performance ratio is quite high for FortiGate."

Sophos UTM vs. Fortinet FortiGate
I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main…

Hi, It's very hard to compare brand name of firewalls and you did not clarify specific models. Normally, an IT is often using a firewall and suggest that brand name. Actually, it will depend on what bundle of service you choose in each brand name of firewall. Of course, Palo Alto - it's worth it. My suggestion is base on your requirement of security and your budget, then read the specs of each ...
