Great firewalls, VPN, and Intrusion prevention capabilities
Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management. Another point is to improve the technical support provided by Check Point UTM-1. Although the company offers different standards, including basic and premium, by mail and by telephone, they present a very large deficiency in the time it takes to comply with the provisions of the SLA. Coordinating a meeting is complicated by the schedules. The documentation should also be improved by having it unified.

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Check Point has been in the security industry for so long that it has evolved different solutions and technologies."
"The most important features are performance and ease of management."
"This product is very good for the investment."
"It safeguards against cyber attacks."
"The databases and its signatures are its most important features."
"The ability to create a central database for objects (sources, destinations, services, etc.), which can be used in several different policies, and the possibility of browsing all logs (FW, IPs, identity awareness, etc.) from all the gateways from a unique screen are big pluses."
"The most outstanding feature is being able to centralize each of the functions in a single device."
"Firewalls help us a lot in controlling traffic on our network and preventing unauthorized access."
"It is a very good solution for enterprises that need a VPN for their employees. It is the best way to provide a remote work facility to employees at a very low cost. Other solutions that I have had in the past were very expensive. Enterprises don't always have that kind of money to invest."
"The solution's most valuable features are its ease of use and versatility."
"The solution's most valuable feature is that it is a highly configurable tool."
"The most valuable feature of pfSense is that it's a stateful firewall. I also like the way the rules are implemented on the firewall. It makes things much easier to see at a glance."
"If you have full logging turned on you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of traffic is going in from where to where."
"I have been 100% satisfied with the solution."
"Failover, URL Filtering, Proxy server, traffic monitoring features inbuilt with SNORT IDS/IPS is all we use and have never faced any problem for over 5 years now."
"The solution is very easy to use and configure."

Cons

"Specifically on the user experience, sometimes the set up of things, such as the VPN SSL, takes a lot of time to load and a lot of time to get up and running on every session."
"As we don't have a representative of Check Point supplier in our country, this makes it very difficult when we have some issues to resolve."
"Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management."
"What has been the issue of firewalls is they ask me for policies and content filtering application control and all these features that are now part of Harmony."
"Memory and processing power: These devices are strictly for small business applications."
"Technical support was very bad because the supplier who sold it to us, wasn't very supportive, and he wouldn't giving us direct links to the OEM."
"Customer Service: Horrible. It takes them days, sometimes weeks, until they try to help, and then they don't help enough."
"The pricing is too high."
"A way to clean squid cache from the GUI."
"PfSense's interface could be improved. For example, the menu is ordered alphabetically instead of logically. The reboot button should be located near the shutdown, but it's in alphabetical order. Also, Netgear should create a home license for pfSense Plus for non-commercial use."
"Yes, sometimes there are issues if there are some complex configurations."
"A malware blocker should be included."
"One thing that stuck out to me was the move to use plastic chassis on the Netgate devices or products. They are moving away from using metal chassis, and I find that the plastic seems to get hotter than the metal."
"I would like more add-ons/packages for extending pfSense which are approved by the main community."
"The solution requires a lot of administration."
"From the hardware perspective, it seems like there has been a lot of turnover at Netgate. It comes with the territory because processors and other boards change so fast. But I'd like to see more continuity in the product line and a longer lifespan for a specific series. The operating system side of it has been rock solid, and the appliances have been great. I just want to not support many different appliances. I want one we can standardize for several years."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This cost is between 3,000 and 5,000 euros per year, so some other solutions are cheaper and the pricing should be improved."
"The pricing is too high."
"The pricing is lower than some of its competitors."
"The solution's pricing is comparable to other products."
"The solution software does not require a license, it is free. The support contract is about $600 dollars."
"It is on the higher side. If you want to purchase pfSense Plus alone, the cost is roughly $150 a year, but the value provided justifies the expense. However, a lower-end tier option, around $100, would be beneficial."
"When it comes to Netgate pfSense, I use the basic TAC Lite license, which comes for about 100 USD."
"Netgate pfSense is competitively priced."
"There are a few features not included, and when you have to use those features, you have to pay for them."
"This solution was about $150,000 cheaper than the closest competitor over a three year period."
