Enables streamlined data center management with automation and application-centric design
The main features of Cisco ACI that I really appreciate are the application-centric and network-centric designs, allowing you to create your network according to your application. That's helpful, and it's good for one-time implementation. The automation capabilities are really helpful. We deployed one data center using Terraform, and after deployment, many automation features are available, which can be very helpful. Based on my experience, Cisco ACI provides substantial capability; you can design your network accordingly and it's part of the SDN family, providing many benefits to the organization, especially when moving from traditional network infrastructure. Many organizations are actually using the old traditional Nexus infrastructure or some old data center devices. It gives you significant control and one-time implementation capabilities, and it also provides better performance and security. Functionality-wise, Cisco ACI provides integration using automation. We implemented it through Terraform, which was easy. Those features are available, so I don't think any new features are needed right now; something new could come up, but they have implemented many improvements over the years.

Juniper Contrail Networking is designed to streamline and integrate networking solutions within OpenStack environments. While Juniper's strategy initially aimed at enhancing system integration, some users have reported challenges with seamless integration, with other platforms like Red Hat and Ubuntu. These integration issues sometimes led to difficulties in diagnosing problems, as they were attributed to Contrail or OpenStack rather than directed to the appropriate support channels. Additionally, concerns were raised about the complexity of involving networking components like MX routers, which often required expertise beyond the scope of software engineers. As a result, users encountered challenges in achieving comprehensive understanding and troubleshooting of networking issues within the Contrail environment.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Having a lot of racks and switches with a single point of configuration which can be done with automation on one platform using one API. This makes everything work faster."
"ACI provides network ability to deploy and respond to the needs of applications, both in the data center and in the cloud."
"It is very stable. It works 100 percent of the time."
"There are many features which are useful, like the automatic completion of the VXLAN."
"This product improved the way our company functions by enabling us to establish our goal of moving to a zero-trust model."
"I use Cisco for security and collaborating, and I use this solution with WebEx, WebEx Teams, and WebEx Board as a hybrid solution."
"I recommend Cisco ACI due to its reliable tech support, timely updates for security, traffic management, and ease of management."
"The most valuable feature is the data center communication."
"It provides proactive alerting in a single dashboard solution."
"After we finished setting Contrail up, it seemed stable enough. Still, we never tested it in a real environment, so we don't have enough information to say whether it's stable with a given number of users and appliances. We have tested it in a lab environment, but we haven't tested enough to say that the platform is stable."
"Contrail automates the excellent communication between virtual appliances."
"Juniper Contrail Networking is low-cost for small and medium-sized businesses, and Cisco and Palo Alto solutions are more expensive."
"After we finished setting Contrail up, it seemed stable enough."
"Juniper Contrail Networking is a stable solution."

Cons

"Our company had a lot of issues with the starter kit."
"Figuring out how to implement the product for clients is the area we struggle with the most every day. Perhaps an enhancement would be artificially intelligent solutions, but that would be further down the road."
"The initial set up was complex. We had to deploy 120 leads. Migrating from Legacy Cisco network to ACI was complex."
"I would like to see a smoother transition from existing systems."
"It could benefit from an orchestration tool that makes deploying services easier."
"Where there is room for improvement from ACI is for Layer 2 and Layer 7 packages."
"It needs more integration with public clouds, like Azure and AWS."
"Cisco ACI is difficult both technically to build it out and then operationally to manage."
"Visibility, especially for the top of the platform, is a nightmare. The top was documented incorrectly and really complex to complete."
"Juniper Contrail Networking is difficult if you do not have a certificate for Juniper. Juniper is a different type of configuration or operation than Cisco."
"Juniper needs to address the market's specific requirements, such as the SME sector, and offer more lower-priced products like a lower-end segment switch."
"Concerns were raised about the complexity of involving networking components like MX routers, which often required expertise beyond the scope of software engineers. As a result, users encountered challenges in achieving comprehensive understanding and troubleshooting of networking issues within the Contrail environment."
"Juniper Contrail Networking is difficult if you do not have a certificate for Juniper. Juniper is a different type of configuration or operation than Cisco."
"Visibility, especially for the top of the platform, is a nightmare. The top was documented incorrectly and really complex to complete. In the end, it worked but only after several weeks of work with the support of a Juniper solution engineer in Holland."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you compare the licensing and total cost of ACI, it's cheaper than NSX because of the licensing fees. If you are going for full NSX features it will be too expensive, especially the next-generation firewalling feature."
"A big company can automate it themselves or spend a lot of money and buy it."
"Cisco is much more expensive than other vendors, especially when it comes to the licensing."
"It is quite expensive. It is not at all on the cheap or medium side."
"The product is not cheap."
"We used Cisco Professional Services for the deployment. They were outstanding, but very expensive."
"The pricing is pretty good for new technology."
"It's expensive but the product is very good. I have never found another partner like Cisco with a solution like this and with great support."
"Juniper Contrail Networking is low-cost for small and medium-sized businesses. Cisco and Palo Alto solutions are more expensive."
"There are many vendors in the wireless market that offer better pricing, solutions, and management skills compared to Juniper."
