Data governance has transformed business glossaries and now drives AI-ready insights
I think it's a great platform. Searching can be made a little better. The data marketplace which it provides is also great, but sometimes when we are searching an element and we know we are not sure if we can find it or if we have missed it. Listing data domains in one place for quick visibility will be an add-on. I am not a hardcore coder. For a coder to create workflows and automate the process, I needed to learn Groovy script and create some workflows. In the automation part, I think it can also introduce a low-code, no-code platform where we can connect different connectors and we can quickly create some automated workflows, if at basic level only, because the next big thing is automation and AI. Low-code, no-code platforms are being used by everyone. I think that will be useful. When I look for a data domain, I'm not able to find it very quickly. For a business owner to know data domains and search data domains, it could be made a little easier. Also, the automation part needs improvement. We are only able to enter the data manually or connect to a data source, but now we want to create some workflows as well. That's why I've chosen a rating of eight. Otherwise, it's really great.

I've only worked with versions 9.7 and 10.5.1, and I'm not familiar with the newest features in the current version, 10.5.1. However, I'm sure they have incorporated AI capabilities, as that is the current industry trend. It is this new buzzword. Informatica itself introduced CLAIRE AI. I am four versions behind. So, it would be good if I upgraded. Plus, Informatica has rebranded this TDM. It's not even originally from Informatica. They purchased the company that makes the application around 2010. Informatica has purchased so many companies for different purposes, like business-to-business, test data management, and more. They change the trade name so frequently. It used to be ILM, Informatica Lifecycle Management, then they changed it to something else, then Test Data Management, and then Security Governance and Policy Management or something like that. It's all different names for the same product. Frequent rebranding and name changes can create confusion for customers.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The catalog feature is definitely valuable because it makes ingesting the metadata of any application quite simple."
"I would recommend Collibra Governance depending on the needs of the company."
"It's incredibly easy to use."
"I like the lineage feature the most because I don't think there's any other tool that actually depicts the data flow from multiple sources and the connectivities between every data element inside those sources."
"Collibra Catalog has significantly enhanced data governance and compliance for our team, primarily through its valuable feature of endpoint lineage enabling visual representation of the data."
"Essentially, it has provided us with more trust and transparency — this is the real benefit that we've got out of Collibra."
"It's not a complicated product."
"The data quality functionality provides cutting-edge, next-level insights when compared to other tools such as Alation and Microsoft Purview."
"Informatica TDM is also developer-friendly, making it easy for ETL developers to pick up and use without extensive training."
"The customer service and support are very responsive."
"It is an excellent product."
"Informatica Test Data Management is a complete solution. I'm not very deep in the technical aspect of the solution, but most of the workflows are now completely automated. There are some minor elements where we have to still add manual parts to the implementation."
"The most valuable feature of TDM is its ability to mask data while maintaining referential integrity."
"This product saves time by enabling pretty quick development of data masking/sub-setting the Informatica code."
"These products are highly scalable in my experience; they are scalable both horizontally (grid, multi-node environment) and vertically (more CPU cores), and they are also scalable in terms of the pushdown capability to the database engine or Hive."
"Organizations working on different projects can benefit from this tool."

Cons

"With Collibra Data Intelligence Platform, users need to create and establish connections, which requires entering connection details. This process is more time-consuming in Collibra Data Intelligence Platform compared to Purview, where everything can be done in minutes."
"Collibra Lineage could improve connectively. If they can offer more out-of-the-box connectors, which come as in a package compared to you having to go and buy a lot in the marketplace for certain specific connectors."
"This solution could be improved with the the addition of process diagrams to help the many users of the platform understand all the fields."
"We are not able to ingest all the data in Collibra, and that's why we cannot do element-to-element level data tracking."
"Many other tools like Collibra Governance give you the option to actually see the data in the tool, which is not an option in Collibra."
"I have seen many customers moving away from Collibra Lineage after using it for a couple of years because the cost-benefit analysis does not give them a favorable report."
"It would be better if features like the privacy module and AI-based Collibra DQ were included in one package instead of being separate and requiring additional costs. Currently, the basic package covers lineage and documentation, but the extra modules come at an extra cost."
"Collibra Platform could be improved regarding data quality, as the rules cannot be defined as easily as in other tools."
"There is a lag while opening the console, which is a concern from my end."
"There are numerous issues, and we have reported these to the Informatica vendor."
"If there were some methods to mask data in the cloud, then that would be good."
"The response from Informatica support was nil."
"Informatica has a data governance suite, and at the moment, there is no connection between the data governance elements, such as the data catalog, and the Informatica Test Data Management software."
"A lot of improvement is needed, mainly due to the fact that the tool is very slow."
"It should enable DevOps in CI/CD environments There should be compatibility with big data in SAP environments: These are most widely used in the enterprise level of the organization"
"They have to create more transformations that can be utilized in the tool."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We purchase its annual license. There is an extra cost for additional users."
"I think they can bring a few more features and align better with other quality products."
"Collibra provides you with a license based on the subscription model that you purchase."
"The product is highly priced compared to other vendors."
"I would say it's probably in line with what other vendors charge for licensing."
"Many of our customers I spoke to felt that the solution is a bit highly-priced."
"There are different licenses available for Collibra Lineage based on what kind of access you want. If you want, for example, a read-only license they have different ones to pick from."
"Collibra Governance is an expensive solution."
"It's expensive because the license needs to be bought for some time period. It's not pay as you go."
"The cost is not an issue for enterprises, but for smaller businesses, it could be."

Depending on your requirement you would want to select the right tool to achieve your requirement based on the suggestions below. 1. Data Discovery and Obfuscation with Classification you would need a tool that is capable of handling referential integrity ensuring that when a data is Identified as PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is obfuscated correctly e.g. If Jim is Obfuscated to Jack then any relatable references of Jim is always masked as Jack. Cross Reference mapping is a key in Test Data Management that deals with taking data from Production and making it available in Non-Prod sanitizing the data to have meaningful information but not identifiable information.  Once the data rules for sanitization are defined applying the data rules in the most efficient way will be another criteria to consider. You would not want your data not to be available during the process of obfuscation or have a DB performance issue. You should also consider capabilities like continuality in case your obfuscation process fails midway  you would want to continue from the last updated record (Informatica Test Data Manager for relational database only, Broadcom Test Data Manager for relational database only and some non-relational databases and flat files, Collibra for structured and some unstructured data source) 2. How often will my data be refreshed, If it is very often then you would want to subset the data to only include changes in your refresh as the obfuscation process is resource-intensive and could lead to performance degradation on a continuous refresh of a large database.  (Informatica Test Data Manager for relational database only, Broadcom Test Data Manager for relational database only and some non-relational databases and flat files, Collibra for structured and some unstructured data source) 3. How often does my database need restore for testing and how often would you get conflict due to multiple tests running on the same environment. You would want to consider virtualizing the data like Virtual Machine to prevent regular restore and having a quick checkpoint to roll to once testing is completed and also giving the capability to the tester to have their own test environment (Broadcom Test Data Manager for a relational database). 4. Is data generation your requirement, do you need to add missing data or generate data for a newly developed system. Would you want to generate data that meet negative and positive test case scenarios? E.g. Getting a valid Social Security number that is usable but has no actual entity to be identified to, Generating a Visa card dummy number that will pass visa validation but is not a valid card (Informatica Test Data Manager for relational database only, Broadcom Test Data Manager for relational database only and some non-relational databases and flat files) 5. Data Discovery would also be a good to have feature, like the capability to scan data and column in your data source and identify information that could be PII data - (Informatica Test Data Manager for relational database only, Broadcom Test Data Manager for relational database only and some non-relation databases, Collibra for structured and some unstructured data source) 6. Classification of the databased on discovery and risk of the data in the data source (Informatica Test Data Manager support, Broadcom Test Data Manager support, Collibra supports) 7. How diverse is my data sources. does my data reside on the same database or multiple databases, are the relationship that exists across databases and are all the databases supported by the tool.  8. Do data only reside in the database or in a Flat file, will the tool be capable of providing test data management to flat-file like CSV, XML and so on.

With just those few requirements, I'd opt for a simpler tool such as the one by dScribe from a cataloging point of view.  If validation of the actual data is a requirement then the most complete offering today is Collibra's.
