Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

An affordable product that offers a reasonably good technical support
I rate the product's initial setup phase an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup phase, and ten is an easy setup phase. The product's installation phase took me around two weeks. On average, it usually takes about a week or two to deploy when everything is in place. The solution is deployed on a hybrid cloud from Azure.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's an enterprise product. It's a stable product. We have good support. Almost all databases are in the scope."
"Archiving and storage are very good."
"The Command Center is provided from the web interface. You can back up the data for everybody, but also you can give everybody the ability to view and restore their data. For example, if a laptop, machine, or environment is owned by X, then X can look in and see the environment and data that he has backed up. He can see everything that he owns and can manage the environment as he wishes. It gives him an excellent view of his environment and infrastructure. Also, if you are a service provider, you can back up data for multiple companies and give everyone an interface for their environment to manage, backup, and restore data. Commvault has done excellent work in this area."
"The most valuable feature of Metallic is its flexibility and user-friendly."
"We switched to Commvault because we were looking to centralize management. This reduced IT administrator time as well as providing stability and reliability for data backups in a single console."
"Not everyone has agents for everything and Commvault has agents for most products. It's the most complete."
"One-Pass (Archive) DataBase backup (Online Backup and Granular level restore), VM backup and restore."
"With Commvault, we run a single job as a one-pass job, it will run backup and archive in a single job, no need to run two jobs for backup and archive them differently."
"Nutanix, in my opinion, will eventually take over."
"We find the ease of use valuable."
"We use this solution as an integrated backup solution and it is integrated from the backup provider to the Nutanix solution."
"Our primary use case for the solution is to back up our devices and equipment for employees and some equipment in airport software."
"Nutanix has its own backup system known as HYCU, as well as its own virtual server."
"We use this solution as an integrated backup solution and it is integrated from the backup provider to the Nutanix solution."
"Nutanix can converge legacy-style rack mount servers, so it is highly scalable."
"I like the autofill-over feature and the simplicity of the solution."

Cons

"Sometimes the web page doesn't work. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals."
"They can always improve the interface design to make it easier."
"One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on."
"The solution requires improvement with its connection and bandwidth."
"Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible."
"Endpoint backup."
"It is quite expensive when compared to other applications in the market."
"Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals."
"This solution could be improved with regards to the hosts that integrate with the platform itself. Each of the hosts integrated with the storage and networking only provide one instance of a backup."
"I would like to see the multi-cloud improve."
"The solution's setup process should be simplified."
"The pricing could be improved. It's an expensive solution."
"Nutanix is not secure enough, and it needs to be more resilient."
"The price of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"It could be cheaper."
"The solution could be cheaper and they should include more education or marketing materials for users to understand how to use the solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
"Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
"Commvault's pricing model and pricing structure were initially confusing, but once we worked more closely with the company, we were able to transition to a subscription license that saved us a lot of money."
"The cost for Commvault is very expensive, even support is very expensive. The full cost of the solution is 50,000 INR per year, which includes 20 VM backups, server data backup, and 200 desktop and laptop agent licenses."
"The price of Commvault HyperScale X is a lot higher than competitors. As a government institution, we have annual costs. We made a budget for one year in advance. It was difficult to calculate the other solution's costs because each solution has another way of licensing. The solution is expensive but it is very good and we know the good quality we will be receiving."
"We have checked some other products, but we are not testing them because price-wise, Commvault is better than the other solutions."
"It is a bit more than other products, but when you consider the time savings, it is saving money."
"It would not be affordable for small to medium size organizations."
"While Nutanix Mine is extremely expensive for small businesses, it is a very cost-effective product for enterprise businesses."
"I rate the pricing a five out of ten because the price is average."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is affordable or low, and ten is expensive or high, I rate the price as two."
"Nutanix Mine Integrated Backup is fairly priced."
