Unified data protection has simplified hybrid backups and has improved ransomware recovery speed
Commvault Cloud's best feature in terms of protection is that it provides data protection and accomplishes its job effectively. It offers a unified approach to backup across all environments, including on-premises, public cloud, and SaaS applications such as M365 and Salesforce. I also use it for virtual machines and databases. The unified protection approach helps my team manage different environments effectively. Before Commvault Cloud, I used a separate VM backup tool to protect the VMware environment. For database backup, I had to use the native tool or backup scripts. For the cloud part, I had to use the native AWS or Azure cloud tools. After moving to Commvault Cloud, a single policy or a set of backup policies is applied across virtual machines, databases, workloads, and cloud workloads. I can protect my environments, which reduces manual configuration errors. Regarding visibility, it provides one dashboard to manage and centralize monitoring of all workloads. It is very easy to track backup success or failure. I can see the SLA compliance and storage usage without needing to jump between tools to check or have visibility of it. Regarding the recovery experience, the recovery time has been reduced drastically by using Commvault Cloud. It has simplified cloud management and provides easier manageability to manage retention policies, encryption policies, and compliance rules. This helps reduce operational workloads. Commvault Cloud has impacted me very positively. It simplifies and unifies data protection across hybrid workloads. Instead of managing multiple backup tools for virtual machines, databases, and SaaS applications, I now have a single platform with consistent policies and centralized visibility. This has really reduced my operational complexity and improved backup reliability. Regarding the cyber resiliency posture, the immutable backups and ransomware recovery workflow give me greater confidence in recovering quicker from potential risks. Commvault Cloud has positively impacted me in several key areas: unified backup management across environments, reduced operational overhead, improved ransomware resiliency, faster recovery times, better visibility for compliance, and easier management of hybrid or cloud workloads.

Automated backups have cut recovery time and protect Kubernetes workloads across hybrid clusters
Overall, I am happy with Veeam Kasten, but I think the multi-cluster management dashboard can be improved. When managing multiple Kubernetes clusters, it would be better if the backup jobs, policies, and alerts were available in one unified view. I also feel that the user interface can be made a bit more user-friendly, especially for quick filtering of backup jobs and restore points in a large environment. Other than that, I have not faced any major issues with it. One more important improvement I would like to suggest is better reporting and alerting. It would be helpful if backup failures and storage usage were more detailed in the dashboard without needing any external monitoring tool. Apart from that, the documentation is very good, and I have not faced any major issues with the installation or configuration integration with Kubernetes, OpenShift, or RKE2, and S3-compatible storage is straightforward. Overall, I am satisfied with the product.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Global deduplication and the indexing of the data object are the most valuable features. It saves costs on the product side by doing compression and deduplication. It will help you and make your life easy to reach the data that you need within the minimum downtime when it's required."
"The solution is easy to use and the duplication is quite good."
"Commvault Cloud provides an excellent solution."
"We have seen a high return of value, and management is also happy."
"Backup and archive with a single window, with a single backup job. You only need to type "c"."
"Commvault makes it easier to back up new additions to our environment."
"The most valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X are all the general functions and the performance."
"We recommend this product for people who are running the Oracle Virtualization Manager."
"The effectiveness of Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes in minimizing operational complexities is saving our lives."
"Now, with the scheduled backups and restore points, we can restore the complete application, including the namespace, PVs, PVCs, deployments, and services in around ten to twenty minutes."
"Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes is a very good backup solution; during times of DC/DR, whenever clusters or systems go down, I can use previously taken backups, and my DevOps team can integrate and migrate them, rebuilding my stopped cluster in less time, which reduces my downtime significantly."

Cons

"In a price comparison, definitely Avamar is the winner."
"When we started using Commvault, we felt that there were some technical issues with managing it, but we are comfortable enough with managing it now. There were many issues, like index corrupting, when we first started, but all those issues were resolved by the Commvault tech team."
"Commvault could improve in the area of monitoring and notification services."
"Sometimes there are people, personnel, that are not that well educated. Sometimes I know more than the person I'm talking to and they are supposed to be helping me with technical problems."
"Competitive products have emerged with less cost, making the pricing a challenging factor."
"It would be nice to have just one email report come in, then we can filter out failures. If everything is backed up, we really don't need to see the report. If it is in a single report. A simpler customised report would be good."
"We've run into some issues when attempting to restore very large numbers of files. Of course, that's more of a design issue."
"Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't."
"Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes can improve its multi-cluster setup dashboard because the multi-cluster and single-cluster dashboards are the same."
"Overall, I am happy with Veeam Kasten, but I think the multi-cluster management dashboard can be improved."
"The stability part could be improved a little bit."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is licensed based on the number of objects that we're going to back up, and that's a known quantity. As a result, we get predictable costs for our backup requirements."
"Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
"Metallic is an affordable solution."
"The price could always be lower."
"One of the most interesting aspects is that the licensing model can be modified. We're paying for our licensing by the client, as opposed to the size of the footprint of the backup, which decreased our cost by about 20 percent."
"There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
"Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."
"Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte."
