Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Easy to setup, good support and stable product
When we started, we used Acronis for both cloud and on-premises backups. Protege was a reliable solution, and the cloud-focused approach is well-suited for our current needs. If you require both cloud and on-premises backup capabilities, Acronis is a more comprehensive solution. For solely cloud-based backups, Protege is a solid option.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We've found the product to be stable."
"The source site replication feature is valuable."
"I recommend it to everyone who is searching for any complete backup for an entire infrastructure, for example, for a virtual server, a database server, or a laptop or desktop."
"Stable and scalable backup and recovery software, with good technical support."
"The performance of Dell EMC Avamar is good."
"The initial setup is easy."
"Very reliable tool."
"If you're enterprise, you are definitely going to use Avamar because it can save a lot of space because of its duplication feature, which is great."
"Since it is on the cloud, it is a very stable solution."

Cons

"The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be."
"The technical support should be improved. They could be more responsive in the future."
"I have found the support from Dell EMC Avamar to be not as good as Veeam. The time it takes to receive support could be improved. However, once we have the support the agents are knowledgeable and helpful."
"There also needs to be single sign-on support."
"If you need to pull data out of it to offload to tapes, that's messy. You have a mechanism for it, but it is painful."
"I believe they need to improve the interfaces."
"The solution used to freeze sometimes while taking a snapshot backup."
"A huge storage space needs to be bought with Dell Avamar, even when it's unnecessary for an organization"
"One area for improvement would be expanding its capabilities beyond Azure-specific backups."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It might not be beneficial to smaller businesses due to its high cost."
"The price is fair."
"Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
"On a scale of one to five, I would rate the pricing policy of Dell Avamar as five. The solution has a very good price, and a lot of improvements were done to it."
"The solution is costly."
"Dell Avamar is free when we deploy the data protection. When we order data protection, this software is included in the hardware."
"It is expensive. The maintenance comes with it for five years. So, you buy the whole thing for five years, and your maintenance is included with it, but it's a big chunk of change upfront. We like capital expenses because we can CapEx them. We pay once every five years, so we spend a big chunk of change. You'd have to divide that out by the five years to come up with how much it costs. It's just about three-quarters of a million dollars for five years."
"The solution is not expensive for the value one gets."

What needs improvement with Dell Avamar?
It is a very good product. My only concern is that there is no tape backup. For tape backup, we have to use Dell NetWorker. They could add more features for cyber resilience and multi-cloud options...
