Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

An affordable product that offers a reasonably good technical support
I rate the product's initial setup phase an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup phase, and ten is an easy setup phase. The product's installation phase took me around two weeks. On average, it usually takes about a week or two to deploy when everything is in place. The solution is deployed on a hybrid cloud from Azure.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup is easy."
"The solution scales well."
"I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses."
"I like that the solution integrates well with the different platforms that we have, Unix, Windows, Hyper-V and VM, as not all the solutions do that."
"Easy to configure and highly reliable for backup."
"We've found the product to be stable."
"This is a great product and the integration is easy with other solutions, like the cloud or Data Domain, and it's scalable."
"It works quickly and is very stable."
"We find the ease of use valuable."
"Our primary use case for the solution is to back up our devices and equipment for employees and some equipment in airport software."
"Nutanix, in my opinion, will eventually take over."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...I rate the technical support a nine out of ten."
"We use this solution as an integrated backup solution and it is integrated from the backup provider to the Nutanix solution."
"Nutanix can converge legacy-style rack mount servers, so it is highly scalable."
"Nutanix has its own backup system known as HYCU, as well as its own virtual server."
"I like the autofill-over feature and the simplicity of the solution."

Cons

"Adding new nodes is an extremely difficult task. Took me nearly 28 hours for node addition and data rebalance."
"Restores should be faster. Backup image browse times should be faster."
"The bare-metal restores could be improved."
"Avamar is not the best tool when it comes to taking Azure backups. Like Commvault, if Avamar can support VM-level backups for the cloud, that would make it a bit better."
"It is very scalable, and that's its claim to fame, but that also makes it hard to make changes. Anytime there is a large piece of software, changing that piece of software is harder. You've got a larger install base, so you can't just rapidly change. We also use another product called Veeam, and it has this new feature called Continuous Data Protection, which basically lets you get very close to the way the system was in time. We have a system or two up there on which we have set 10 minutes Continuous Data Protection. So, we can roll it back to whatever it was 10 minutes ago, 20 minutes ago, or 30 minutes ago. This feature doesn't exist in Avamar Data Domain. That's the one feature I'd like to see first."
"If you want to set up integration with a cloud environment, for example, it's very difficult to do that. Avamar doesn't work very well in the cloud environment."
"The performance is a big issue for us and maybe the support service."
"Reporting in Dell Avamar needs improvement. The current reporting tool is very basic, and you have to dig deep into each function to get the information you need. For example, getting the status of failed and succeeded backups is very difficult in Avamar compared to Veeam. As for additional functionality, I would suggest improving WAN optimization. It's very important for getting offline or off-site backups. It should also include a tool to check for ransomware which would be beneficial. If a backup is vulnerable to ransomware, there should be a way to detect it, like using ARR rules to ensure your backup is ransomware-free. I haven't had any experience integrating Dell Avamar with AI solutions. It’s also a good point that Avamar doesn't offer such integrations, which is an area where Dell could improve."
"Nutanix is not secure enough, and it needs to be more resilient."
"It could be cheaper."
"The pricing could be improved. It's an expensive solution."
"The solution's setup process should be simplified."
"This solution could be improved with regards to the hosts that integrate with the platform itself. Each of the hosts integrated with the storage and networking only provide one instance of a backup."
"The solution could be cheaper and they should include more education or marketing materials for users to understand how to use the solution."
"I would like to see the multi-cloud improve."
"The price of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's an expensive tool"
"Dell Avamar is free when we deploy the data protection. When we order data protection, this software is included in the hardware."
"The cost of the solution is very expensive."
"The solution is expensive."
"Dell Avamar is expensive."
"On a scale of one to five, I would rate the pricing policy of Dell Avamar as five. The solution has a very good price, and a lot of improvements were done to it."
"It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
"I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
"While Nutanix Mine is extremely expensive for small businesses, it is a very cost-effective product for enterprise businesses."
"Nutanix Mine Integrated Backup is fairly priced."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is affordable or low, and ten is expensive or high, I rate the price as two."
"I rate the pricing a five out of ten because the price is average."
