Reliable with good backups but has occasional failures
I use Dell Avamar primarily for backup and recovery The most valuable feature for me is the backup functionality. It gives large enterprises the comfort of knowing their workloads are being backed up. There are instances where backups fail on certain applications, which is an area that could be…

Though a highly stable tool, it needs to be made easier to use and configure
Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a five out of ten. OpenText Data Protector is complex to configure correctly, but the areas concerning the data and compression are good. Once you get the product to work, it works, but it's much too complex to configure and troubleshoot, as it takes a lot of time and energy, making it not so efficient. Once the tool is configured in your environment, it provides good backup and compression features. In my company, we use OpenText Data Protector as a backup for our servers, and we have a team of 20 people to take care of the data backup using the tool. My company doesn't use OpenText Data Protector as a backup for our client's computers. In my company, we have scheduled the process related to backup, which makes the tool run daily around 30 to 40 times.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The stability of Dell EMC Avamar is very good."
"It's a good solution."
"The most valuable feature is the virtual backup."
"So far, Avamar covers everything we want. We are replicating to other sites for disaster recovery, so it's working well for us."
"I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data."
"I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses."
"The function I find most valuable in Dell Avamar is its ability to take differential backups for users. This feature is very effective for both backup and restore operations. We've had multiple cases where we needed to restore files directly from Avamar, and it worked perfectly. The Delta feature, which captures changes in user files, is particularly useful."
"The performance of Dell EMC Avamar is good."
"Micro Focus Data Protector's most valuable feature is its interaction with the fiber share. It is easy to use, we use it to back up without any problem to VTLs, and can use the Fiber Channel that is still the TCP."
"The normal file system backup is easy to manage, and our success rate is quite high."
"What we find most valuable in Micro Focus Data Protector is that it provides Japanese data protection, for example, it protects information such as the full Japanese name, address, etc."
"The solution is easy to use."
"It is a traditional backup model. If you talk about file server and the official Windows database, it's a stable product."
"It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software."
"It is very easy to use and the interaction with various systems is very handy."
"Ability to automatically detect and secure new data sources without requiring manual configuration intervention."

Cons

"More integration would be helpful, as well as the addition of more applications."
"The reporting should be improved, as we currently have to use another tool for that purpose."
"It would be better if we could integrate easily with other platforms."
"It's an expensive solution."
"Setting up Avamar wasn't so easy, and we had a partner doing the installation for us. Though it was hard at first, it's getting better. The main difficulty was finding plugins for Oracle Database. It took some time to open a ticket with Dell, but everything was fine after that."
"This solution could improve by introducing daily verifications and another repository."
"The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be."
"If you need to pull data out of it to offload to tapes, that's messy. You have a mechanism for it, but it is painful."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."
"The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match."
"In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on."
"Microfocus needs to build a partnership with other vendors in addition to HPE as far as cloud consolidation of backups."
"The product can be developed by including functionalities like DR, CDP, and SureBackup, which are currently unavailable in the solution."
"It would be ideal if they could improve their level of support."
"People prefer Veeam because the interface is easier, and Data Protector is difficult in comparison."
"Other tools seem to be easier to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
"Avamar's pricing is quite competitive compared to other vendors."
"When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
"The cost is high."
"Licensing fees are paid annually."
"The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
"The solution is not expensive for the value one gets."
"It is expensive. Its cost is the main thing."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
