Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"So far, Avamar covers everything we want. We are replicating to other sites for disaster recovery, so it's working well for us."
"It is one of the best solutions for backing up Oracle and other servers."
"Dell EMC Avamar has many valuable features. It's very stable and it's easy to manage."
"The initial setup is easy."
"We love the instant recovery functionality. It's very useful."
"It's stable and offers good performance."
"The solution integrates well with Unix, Windows, Hyper-V and VM."
"Source based deduplication is the most attractive feature as it drastically reduces the backup window."
"Backup of SAP/Oracle -- they are more robust than the competition."
"Micro Focus Data Protector's most valuable feature is its interaction with the fiber share. It is easy to use, we use it to back up without any problem to VTLs, and can use the Fiber Channel that is still the TCP."
"The initial setup was relatively easy."
"It works excellently only with Oracle."
"It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...The initial setup process for the solution is easy."
"It is very easy to use and the interaction with various systems is very handy."
"I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The file system backup (by far, the most used) is the most valuable feature."

Cons

"There are instances where backups fail on certain applications, which is an area that could be improved."
"The support is very bad."
"Avamar is dependent on the hardware. It can't be implemented with ordinary storage. It can only be implemented with an EMC product. We want to have a backup solution that allows us to use independent storage and other hardware. It would be good if they can simplify its technology and make it possible to implement it with another storage. This is probably not possible because Avamar is an EMC product, and EMC would like to sell its own products."
"We have had a lot of problems with the Dell EMC Avamar solution. The snapshots are not being erased after backup."
"Some customers need to back up to tape, but Avamar lacks support, so it costs a lot."
"There are instances where backups fail on certain applications, which is an area that could be improved."
"Setting up Avamar wasn't so easy, and we had a partner doing the installation for us. Though it was hard at first, it's getting better. The main difficulty was finding plugins for Oracle Database. It took some time to open a ticket with Dell, but everything was fine after that."
"The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker."
"I do not think that this solution is relevant in the current IT market. They have not upgraded their features and functionalities which makes it difficult for them to remain competitive."
"The new backup systems are using new mechanisms for the recovery phases; for example, VM, recovery and testing the backup before recovering it. These features are not available in Data Protector."
"In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on."
"This solution is not scalable."
"I would like to see a better user interface in the next release."
"Other tools seem to be easier to use."
"The online backups of Office 365 have room for improvement. This is now available for the Exchange Online part of Office 365, but we're still waiting for SharePoint Online, Teams, etc. We know that it's coming, but it takes time."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of this product should be lower."
"Dell EMC needs to lower Avamar's price and add more features to stay competitive."
"The price is fair."
"It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
"Avamar's pricing is quite competitive compared to other vendors."
"The solution is not expensive for the value one gets."
"It is expensive. Its cost is the main thing."
"Dell Avamar is a moderately priced solution."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
