Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Unified backups have protected virtual machines and applications and optimize storage efficiency
Regarding automated disaster recovery, we have not used Veritas NetBackup automated disaster recovery because according to the RFP terms and conditions, we are not supposed to have automated failover or failback, as we are a government entity and cannot violate the rules of the RFP. My feedback about granular recovery in Veritas NetBackup is that we have been doing verifications of the backed-up data to restore from point to point and time to time, focusing on file level or database level. When it comes to integration with cloud services, we have not started because we are a government entity and are not allowed to store any data in the cloud at this time. From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong. When I initiate a backup from my laptop or server to the appliance or the tape media using Veritas NetBackup, the encryption channels are not strong, and there are not many options available. Whatever is there is by default and not changeable. We cannot modify any encryption facilities, and security is a big concern nowadays, so you need to look into that. Regarding the functionality part of Veritas NetBackup, I think this encryption feature should be stronger and integrated from point to point, not just at specific levels. When I initiate a backup, all the communication channels involved should be encrypted until it reaches the endpoint, meaning from client to server, server to client, and client device.

Pros

"What I like the most about this solution is that I can change and access the Oracle backup file."
"The best and biggest improvement for us is that we can rely on the backups it provides."
"Data Protector is highly scalable."
"It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software."
"The installation is pretty straightforward and simple; it's not too complex or overly difficult, deployment is fast so you can have it up and running in a day, and you don't need a big technical team to handle deployment and maintenance."
"Customer Service: It's perfect."
"If you have a complex environment, if you have different OS's - Linux, Unix, Windows - if you have backup to disk, Data Protector is a very good choice to cover the whole environment."
"In terms of actually, reliably, backing things up, Data Protector is superior to the other products that we've used in-house."
"In my opinion, the main benefits Veritas NetBackup provides are that it is a unified platform where we can integrate all the requirements such as online backup, offline backup, and virtualization backup in one single platform, although my only concern is the licensing structure."
"Veritas is the market leader in enterprise backup software, with all the required features that are available in the market, always staying one step ahead, and deployment is easy as they have all the documentation required."
"I like NetBackup's accelerator feature. You can take a full backup with incremental speed and integrate it with block tracking."
"Backup and recovery software with great stability, and can support large-scale environments."
"The VM portal and the CloudCatalyst are two of the solution's most valuable features."
"The tool's information transfer and patching up is easy. The solution offers protection from ransomware which is also a valuable feature."
"We are quite satisfied with the performance and reliability of the NetBackup product."
"It offers everything I need from a backup system."

Cons

"Data Protector's main single point of weakness is its GUI."
"I really wouldn't recommend others to use this solution - especially when it comes to the technical support."
"We would like to have a direct plugin to VMware. It could also be simplified, made more usable and manageable."
"In terms of what can be improved, I would say integrations with MongoDB. We use MongoDB and we need to go to scripts to do backups. We need more integrations."
"The problem with HPE Data Protector is when it goes wrong, it's very hard to fathom why it went wrong."
"Other tools seem to be easier to use."
"The major issue we are facing in this product is Sybase database integration."
"Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability."
"You cannot tell what your costs are going to be by using the dashboard, which is something that should be improved."
"Scalability is a challenge because it is only available in a fixed capacity of, at least 48 terabytes, which makes it difficult to manage."
"The solution costs too much."
"The speed of restoring data could be improved."
"Sometimes we have problems with the support team. They always end up solving and fixing everything, but sometimes they are slow to respond."
"The solution's technical support process should be improved."
"Endpoint backup capability is needed."
"The backup operation interface is not as mature as those of Veritas's competitors and has room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
"This is an affordable solution"
"Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
"Veritas NetBackup is quite expensive and licensing costs are fixed."
"Veritas NetBackup's price could be a problem for small businesses."
"It is an expensive solution."
"When you compare NetBackup's software licensing system with Veeam's, which is simpler and based on instances (or how many physical machines or virtual machines you want to protect), NetBackup isn't that competitive for smaller scale companies. However, if you're running many large workloads, then NetBackup may be the better option."
"We are very satisfied with the price of this solution."
