Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Experienced implementation enhances security with robust detection and centralized management
A significant case highlighted an improvement need when a banking company lost 500 customer information pieces through screenshots. The data theft occurred through individual screenshots of credit note pages rather than taking complete PDF files. This incident led to the suggestion for implementing image detection methods, as Data Loss Prevention solutions needed to analyze image details. Symantec responded by creating an OCR module, enabling the capability to search within images. The pricing structure remains an area for improvement. We lost a POC despite installing 2,000 endpoints because Symantec Data Loss Prevention is more expensive compared to other solutions. Although the competing product couldn't match all the best practices, the price difference influenced the final decision.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The feature that was most valuable was that we could restore one mailbox and we could do different backups for different databases."
"Data Protector is a very mature product that allows custom backups, scheduling, and copying in a manner that reduces the amount of time spent with backups from an administrative point of view."
"With Data Protector, if we lose data, we can recover it."
"It is our enterprise backup solution centralizing all backup needs."
"For us, disaster recovery is the most valuable feature."
"The reliability of HP Data Protector is the most valuable feature for us."
"It has the ability to backup both DB2 (IBM's RDBMS) and HP-UX (HP's Unix OS)."
"The tool's most valuable aspect is its ease of management. It was not complex. In terms of features, I can mention a couple of things. For example, if you need to restore a VM, you can do it with multiple streams in OpenText Data Protector, which is an advantage over Commvault, from what I've noticed, having worked with multiple tools. Another thing is the Oracle backups; configuring Oracle backups is much easier in OpenText Data Protector."
"The incident response options and reporting features are particularly strong, with the inclusion of Incident Classification Assessment (ICA) for integrated reporting."
"For detection, it has a great algorithm. It can recognize ID numbers and everything that you put in a policy for the end-users. That is really great for us as an institution where we have sensitive data. It recognizes all the sensitive data when someone tries to transfer it or put in other data."
"There's only one policy needed to implement for all channels."
"The data matching features are the most valuable due to the easy policy setup and implementation."
"The dashboard, management section, and reporting are good."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is endpoint security."
"The most valuable features of Symantec Data Loss Prevention are endpoint security, endpoint agent, and DLP, and we have been satisfied with the policies."
"Symantec Data Loss Prevention's ability to adapt to evolving security landscapes is always helpful."

Cons

"The product can be developed by including functionalities like DR, CDP, and SureBackup, which are currently unavailable in the solution."
"We are switching to Veeam because Data Protector is lacking good virtualization features and because the cost is very high."
"This product needs a lot of improvement both on the technical side and in its pricing and compatibility."
"It took a long time to resolve some of the implementation issues."
"The graphical interface needs to be improved."
"The scheduler setup could be better. We are facing some issues scheduling the job based on our requirements."
"Technical support has not been good recently and in several cases, I have found the solution myself."
"It has a reputation for bugginess."
"There should be more documentation with Symantec Data Loss Prevention. We had trouble with the first few deployments."
"In a majority of cases, most of the companies are using DLP for endpoint sessions, where you have a user that might be communicating information outside of the company. However, they forget there are actual interfaces that can directly communicate with either the database or other files within the data center that uses end-to-end encryption. In those cases, you might need things like your DLP to be able to monitor and block some of that. The solution needs to catch information communicated through the data center on the server-side."
"There should be more information about the features of the solution and what they do."
"What could be improved in Symantec Data Loss Prevention is its security. It should be more secure."
"Symantec could improve by being more creative and simplifying the functions. Additionally, the data protection should be bundled with data classification and labeling instead of them being separate."
"They could improve the predefined reports because they don't have much information. We would like detailed reports."
"Symantec Data Loss Prevention's setup needs to be easier and support needs to be improved."
"Once you deploy any security tool, of course, you are not 100% confident. As we say, the zero trust model applies."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"We are happy with the pricing and licencing."
"I think it is an expensive tool."
"The pricing and licensing are based on per user endpoints."
"The price of Symantec DLP is fair. I don't recall the cost of the license, but it wasn't outrageous enough that it was an obstacle to approval. I'm not concerned with how much per seat or server, but I know they charge a lot."
"The product charges a little on the higher side."
"The price of the solution is expensive."
"From what I know the pricing is good, it's not too expensive. If you negotiate you can get a good price."
"Pricing is reasonable."
