Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Has strengthened data protection across departments and supported continuous monitoring
In future updates of Symantec Data Loss Prevention, I would like to see improvements based on the many attacks happening around the world. They can improve their product and the features mainly to focus on how we can prevent that data within the organization, over the cloud, whatever it is, as that is important.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"From a data protection standpoint, HPE Data Protector reduced our and our customer’s recovery time, and it also gave them an advantage in the industry in that they are able fall back quicker."
"It is really easy to backup and restore your data across all servers, something that IBM Spectrum Protect struggles to do."
"We are required to send sensitive information offsite, and Data Protector has made it easy to meet this requirement."
"The most valuable feature is the capability to back up our SQL server."
"Data Protector works in conjunction with a Catalyst-based deduplication feature and HPE StoreOnce appliances to provide us with the tools to build reliable DR solutions for backups through Catalyst stores replication using ARS between the sites."
"For us, disaster recovery is the most valuable feature."
"The solution is easy to use."
"The solution allows us to be able to backup and exchange directly, to backup Microsoft exchange."
"One of the most valuable aspects of this solution is its integration capabilities with Office 365."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is endpoint security."
"I would assess Symantec Data Loss Prevention's effectiveness in monitoring and controlling data movements across my endpoints, networks, and storage systems as successful since we have used it to monitor the endpoint, storage, and network."
"What we like about Symantec Data Loss Prevention is that it's a very good product. We never faced any problems with its performance. It has very good performance. There was this RAM issue, but it was an internal issue which we've sorted out. Apart from the RAM issue, there are no other issues with Symantec Data Loss Prevention."
"The Network Monitor component is the most advanced on the market. Combined with the other Network DLP components."
"The data matching features are the most valuable due to the easy policy setup and implementation."
"It has good options for policy findings. You can do granular policy enhancements with multiple options. And the SMB blocking is a very good feature."
"I'm able to track everyone who is trying to send information outside the environment and to know if they are not supposed to be sending it. I'm also able to see the people who are accessing or maybe try to access the information they are not supposed to be accessing based on their level of classification. It gives me overall control of who has got access to what and at what point. And who can do what with specific information."

Cons

"I would not recommend this product to my colleagues."
"The online backups of Office 365 have room for improvement."
"I would like to see a better user interface in the next release."
"Based on a recent conversation, technical support has been working to fix a problem for six months, but still haven’t actually fixed it."
"We face challenges with its stability."
"The technical support was very slow."
"Hyper-V backups need improvement so they can do GRE."
"The HPE Data Protector may not be enough to support your RPO/RTO needs, specifically for application integrated backups."
"Symantec could improve by being more creative and simplifying the functions. Additionally, the data protection should be bundled with data classification and labeling instead of them being separate."
"The database is a problem for us, as it's running on Oracle and not everybody likes that."
"The product's technical support services need improvement."
"Technical support is very poor. I am frustrated and irritated by the issue, so it is difficult to offer advice or recommend this solution."
"In the object capture recognition, which we implemented recently, there are a lot of false positives that have been happening."
"From a management perspective, it takes a lot of time to manage the infrastructure."
"The solution should integrate with other databases because it relies on Oracle which is not financially feasible for many customers, particularly in small or poor countries."
"In my opinion, Symantec DLP could improve by offering a better online service option, making it more competitive compared to Forcepoint. Performance could also be enhanced, especially in terms of prevention capabilities. Additionally, it would be beneficial to add features that allow for better policy integration with GDPR, such as international credit, bank account, or identity management. This would make it more straightforward for IT, especially in regions like Indonesia."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing cost is too high."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"The solution should be less expensive to allow more people the opportunity to use it. Some of their competitors are less expensive. There is a license required to use the solution and we purchased an annual license."
"The price is competitive."
"We are happy with the pricing and licencing."
"The product is high-priced."
"The pricing and licensing are based on per user endpoints."
"I think that it's an expensive product, even as an enterprise-suite product."
"The price is a bit high."
