Dell EqualLogic PS series is easily scalable, and we can add extra boxes and storage. It was easy to deploy during COVID. Deploying Dell EqualLogic PS series is straightforward, with no complexity involved. Dell EqualLogic PS series is a good product. We did not experience any failures in the last six to seven years, and it is still running as our storage for offline data. There are snapshot capabilities in data protection available, but we did not use that feature because it consumes much space. We have only 150 terabytes of space and simply use it to create volumes without utilizing it for snapshots. We use thin provisioning in Dell EqualLogic PS series, but I did not explore that feature further.

Flexible, allowing us to provide NAS and SAN solutions with the same hardware
According to my experience, for certain HPC environments, we encounter certain Memory/CPU limitations when we have a large number of IOPS. This is why, in order to support such loads, several cabs are required in parallel, complicating the configuration and administration. Another handicap is the management of the LACP that, when we are talking about environments with less than 20 calculation nodes, may not balance correctly despite setting the RR option.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Technical support, when we had access to it, was very good."
"Technical support is great; we have four-hour support from Dell for storage."
"We were attracted by the flexibility of being able to put in a new shelf whenever we needed to, to expand."
"Before deploying it, we used public clouds for our services, facing latency and other issues with other vendors; after deploying this cluster, we were very satisfied and relieved."
"The most valuable feature of Dell EqualLogic PS series auto tiering by using this feature, the customer can get higher performance on a valuable budget."
"The product is very stable."
"It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The technical support for EqualLogic has been universally outstanding."
"We are very happy with this solution as it brings us the scalability and stability of Data Ontap and the versatility of NetApp solutions in order to provide different types of services for our customers' requirements (NAS, CIFS, FC / FCoE)."
"You have the ability to connect a third-party storage back end, EMC VMAX in our case, and have all NetApp functionalities available."

Cons

"EqualLogic is really not going to be relevant in the marketplace too much longer."
"We are having some issues right now where some of the database operations are recovering and we find there are so many IOPS that EqualLogic fans cannot handle it."
"The searchable online documentation is missing."
"Dell EqualLogic PS series could improve the performance because in our hybrid configuration the read speed is faster than the write speed."
"The solution does not scale well at all. It's a box, so we only have so much space to work with."
"Do not go for EQL. It will be out of production in a few years."
"Higher price at entry level systems compared to competition."
"6510 and 6610 have two iSCSI connections in each controller. Why do 6110xxx members have only one, and why do the same members have the possibility of having an active iSCSI interface in the passive controller? It could make a lot of noise with a failover."
"According to my experience, for certain HPC environments, we encounter certain Memory/CPU limitations when we have a large number of IOPS."
"We have had some performance issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I don't think I would say that the product is less expensive...The product's price is not an issue for our company, considering the relationship we have with Dell and the customer support we receive."
"It seemed expensive at first, but the durability lowered the cost of ownership dramatically over time."
"All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
"It is a fair price."
"There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
"Dell EqualLogic PS series can improve its scale-out feature. Sometimes the customer has a limited budget for storage expansion. When they want to expand their capacity, they need to buy a complete controller plus storage capacity, which sometimes is out of their budget. If Dell EqualLogic PS series support could scale up the environment in which only hard drive extension controllers should be supported, then customers can expand within a lower budget."
"I didn't buy it. It was another person seven years ago. So, I don't really know, but all storage platforms cost a lot of money. It is probably in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for."
"Licensing is pretty straightforward."

Hi, I agree with the feed back above. I have recently been involved in a lengthy project to review all SAN vendors on the market (both Generic and new Hybrid/Flash) and they basically all do the same thing. Some vendors have a few niche technologies/support here and there. It all comes down to what SAN technology is critical to your business/project i.e. DR, Think clones etc. and also the b...

Hi, as Trevor says all are excellent products, but you have to know which one is that fits your project. Because maybe you don´t need the top brand product (size, IOPS) also you have to be aware for the cost for future growth, you can ask your service provider or professional services to help you consider future growth so you can have a complete picture. We have been working with HP 3PAR, VNX and Netapp and all of this storages have a very good support, options and demos.
