Dell EqualLogic PS series is easily scalable, and we can add extra boxes and storage. It was easy to deploy during COVID. Deploying Dell EqualLogic PS series is straightforward, with no complexity involved. Dell EqualLogic PS series is a good product. We did not experience any failures in the last six to seven years, and it is still running as our storage for offline data. There are snapshot capabilities in data protection available, but we did not use that feature because it consumes much space. We have only 150 terabytes of space and simply use it to create volumes without utilizing it for snapshots. We use thin provisioning in Dell EqualLogic PS series, but I did not explore that feature further.

Uninterrupted upgrades accelerate performance with good support
I would rate the solution eight out of ten. It should be noted that in Pakistan, some parts are not readily available, and we need to import them from Singapore or other countries. We encountered an issue with a customer where the midplane failed and was not available. We had to wait for several days for a replacement, even in a 24/7 support case. Additionally, we faced motherboard failures in the customer's environment, encountering two motherboard failures simultaneously. We obtained one motherboard immediately, yet had to wait ten days for another. These issues should have been resolved promptly given the 24/7 support level.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Dell EqualLogic PS series is a highly stable solution."
"Technical support, when we had access to it, was very good."
"The support was excellent."
"The technical support is very good."
"We were attracted by the flexibility of being able to put in a new shelf whenever we needed to, to expand."
"It is extremely reliable."
"Its high availability. It has a lot of redundancy and good management software as well as good alerting."
"The solution has been extremely consistent over the years, we've had absolutely no issues with the product at all, and it's lasted a long time without causing any problems."
"The reason why we chose 3PAR is because it was future proof, with features like thin provisioning, very fast movement of blocks so we can put the hot data where it should be, a really powerful tool to measure data performance and bottlenecks, and no need for spare disks so we could use all the space."
"Primarily good performance because it's an all-flash system; basically, the applications run faster."
"It has really improved how we can streamline our storage purchases, as well as performance."
"So far, we have yet to have a disk fail on either system, other than one I forced to fail when we first got the system in. So the reliability of the 3PAR system has been outstanding."
"We have had it for about two years and had zero problems with it."
"The technical support has been fantastic."
"Go for 3PAR, straight away as I am very happy with this product."
"HPE can login, fix things, alert us to things, and upgrade. We are there and aware, but we do not do the work. So, that is good."

Cons

"It is at the end of support and no longer supported. We have to move our VMware to another storage platform, and we have decided to use Dell PowerStore. We like Dell's products, and it is a new platform with a lot of features."
"It is at the end of support and no longer supported."
"Three of the four devices have been rock solid, and one of them had a string of issues that we eventually resolved."
"The product is reaching the end-of-lifecycle."
"The performance isn't as good as, for example, Nimble."
"Why is it not possible for both controllers to be simultaneously active (load balancing)?"
"It's kind of expensive when you buy the EqualLogic solution because, as you grow, you have to keep buying another controller. It can be more expensive with time."
"There is no inline deduplication capability."
"In the next release, I would like them to make it a little easier to find where everything is in the new console. It now has the OneView look and sometimes I don't think the OneView look is enough. It's too different from the original console that was a separate system."
"Their installation and design engineers leave something to be desired."
"The hard part with the initial setup was that we were on EMC VNX and trying to get those converted over into the HPE 3PAR, that process took awhile, along with scheduling downtime to get some of the physical stuff migrated over to the new device."
"The GUI interface could be improved."
"We have a bad track record on the 3PAR system."
"We had a minor error when we were configuring this system, which initially detracted from its overall stability."
"The solution’s stability could be improved."
"I don't know if you can really fix this but to upgrade from 2 nodes to 4 can be a hassle because you have to re-balance everything."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Price-wise, the solution is cheap. I rate it a three on a scale of one to ten, where one is very cheap, and ten is very expensive."
"I don't think I would say that the product is less expensive...The product's price is not an issue for our company, considering the relationship we have with Dell and the customer support we receive."
"There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
"It is a fair price."
"Licensing is pretty straightforward."
"Initial packages include all upgrades and services."
"All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
"I didn't buy it. It was another person seven years ago. So, I don't really know, but all storage platforms cost a lot of money. It is probably in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for."
"This is not an expensive product but every time you add capacity to it, you need to pay for re-balancing."
"I have to renew support in October for the existing solution. That will cost me roughly $50,000 this year, which in the grand scheme of things, $50,000 is not that much compared to paying $850,000. However, it will be the last year that I'll be able to get direct support from HPE. Therefore, product has to be replaced in 2020."
"If HPE reduced the price of 3PAR StoreServ they would be more attractive to mid-range companies."
"I rate the tool's pricing an eight out of ten. It is expensive."
"It is a little more money, but it is worth it because it does it better."
"This product is quite expensive and in addition, we subscribe to 24/7 support with a four-hour response time."
"It is reasonable. As compared to other solutions, it doesn't seem to be much different."
"This solution is expensive. We pay every year for support. It's a lump sum because we pay for data center support services, and everything is included in one."

Measuring Up: EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR
Leading up to EMC World 2015, IT Central Station asked how I would compare EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR. Until recently, the flash storage conversation in my organization and many others has centered on XtremIO and Pure Storage, the leaders of the all-flash array (AFA) space. To that end, I've written a…
