Useful auto tiering, excellent support, and highly reliable
The initial setup of the Dell EqualLogic PS series is simple. The physical connectivity and rack mounting time depend on the size of the deployment. For example, if we have five of the Dell EqualLogic PS series we can mount and do the cabling within two hours. The initial configuration can be done within an hour. The estimated time to deploy from start to finish in this scenario is four to five hours maximum. One person can do most of the deployment, such as configuration, but a helper is needed to do the mounting of the cables.

Uninterrupted upgrades accelerate performance with good support
I would rate the solution eight out of ten. It should be noted that in Pakistan, some parts are not readily available, and we need to import them from Singapore or other countries. We encountered an issue with a customer where the midplane failed and was not available. We had to wait for several days for a replacement, even in a 24/7 support case. Additionally, we faced motherboard failures in the customer's environment, encountering two motherboard failures simultaneously. We obtained one motherboard immediately, yet had to wait ten days for another. These issues should have been resolved promptly given the 24/7 support level.

"The product is very stable."
"The most valuable features are their tight integration with VMware, their multi-node architecture, and their copy services, such as Peer Persistence."
"The initial setup was very straightforward."
"The solution is stable."
"It has improved the ability of the executives to get proper insights."
"From my perspective, it's really easy for me to be able to get in and do any troubleshooting with it and it's very consistent."
"3PAR is easy to keep running and does not require too much effort. It has been very reliable, which is key."
"It has a really powerful tool to measure data, how it is working, the performance, and if we have any bottlenecks."
"We deployed 3PAR in the national and international markets. It's not bad, the solution."

Cons

"There is no option for mixing RAID types in one device."
"The searchable online documentation is missing."
"Individual file recovery would be a nice additional feature."
"There is no inline deduplication capability."
"The only challenging part in the tool was related to some site recovery area. In order to exploit the site recovery area, my company had to purchase additional VMware products."
"The product is reaching the end-of-lifecycle."
"It is at the end of support and no longer supported. We have to move our VMware to another storage platform, and we have decided to use Dell PowerStore. We like Dell's products, and it is a new platform with a lot of features."
"Synchronous replication uses space inefficiently."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It seemed expensive at first, but the durability lowered the cost of ownership dramatically over time."
"There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
"All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
"I didn't buy it. It was another person seven years ago. So, I don't really know, but all storage platforms cost a lot of money. It is probably in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for."
"It is a fair price."
"Initial packages include all upgrades and services."
"Dell EqualLogic PS series can improve its scale-out feature. Sometimes the customer has a limited budget for storage expansion. When they want to expand their capacity, they need to buy a complete controller plus storage capacity, which sometimes is out of their budget. If Dell EqualLogic PS series support could scale up the environment in which only hard drive extension controllers should be supported, then customers can expand within a lower budget."
"Licensing is pretty straightforward."
"Our licensing cost are $32,000 annually."
"I rate the tool's pricing an eight out of ten. It is expensive."
"3PAR was quite a bit less money than EMC, and that was one of the deciding factors."
"We had to go back and purchase iLO licenses and brocade switches for the flex fabric to have a complete solution."
"From a comparison of bang-for-the-buck, what you get for the money, I'd have to say they are one of the market leaders. Are there solutions that do it faster? Sure, but you're going to pay for it. 3PAR isn't the cheapest, it isn't the most expensive, but in my opinion, it's the best."
"The solution's price is reasonable."
"This solution is expensive. We pay every year for support. It's a lump sum because we pay for data center support services, and everything is included in one."
"They have added features, such as the compression and duplication, which have further increased our ROI."

Measuring Up: EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR
Leading up to EMC World 2015, IT Central Station asked how I would compare EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR.
