Dell EqualLogic PS series is easily scalable, and we can add extra boxes and storage. It was easy to deploy during COVID. Deploying Dell EqualLogic PS series is straightforward, with no complexity involved. Dell EqualLogic PS series is a good product. We did not experience any failures in the last six to seven years, and it is still running as our storage for offline data. There are snapshot capabilities in data protection available, but we did not use that feature because it consumes much space. We have only 150 terabytes of space and simply use it to create volumes without utilizing it for snapshots. We use thin provisioning in Dell EqualLogic PS series, but I did not explore that feature further.

Uninterrupted upgrades accelerate performance with good support
I would rate the solution eight out of ten. It should be noted that in Pakistan, some parts are not readily available, and we need to import them from Singapore or other countries. We encountered an issue with a customer where the midplane failed and was not available. We had to wait for several days for a replacement, even in a 24/7 support case. Additionally, we faced motherboard failures in the customer's environment, encountering two motherboard failures simultaneously. We obtained one motherboard immediately, yet had to wait ten days for another. These issues should have been resolved promptly given the 24/7 support level.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The scalability of the Dell EqualLogic PS series is very good, we had no issues."
"It has been extremely reliable and very easy to upgrade and expand."
"I have been using Equallogic arrays for myself and my customers for over seven years now, and they continue to be my gold standard for SMB storage."
"We've dealt with technical support and have found them to be helpful and responsive."
"The support was excellent."
"Technical support, when we had access to it, was very good."
"The solution can scale."
"The technical support for EqualLogic has been universally outstanding."
"The chunklet technology is the main benefit out of 3PAR. The way it subdivides. It is using more logic to subdivide the drives into smaller pieces."
"It was a smooth transition over."
"Most valuable to us is that the 3PAR is very easy to use and has good response times."
"We went to an Active-Active data center, set it up to where both data centers are separate, but they act as one. We can have workloads at either side at any given time, and it is all based on the Peer Persistence architecture."
"We find the adaptive optimization and dynamic optimization to be the most valuable features."
"It all works in concert using Recovery Manager Central (RMC). HPE coordinates it all, so it is more of a solution instead of products trying to do things together."
"It is a stable solution."
"I would say one of the most valuable is the ability to dedup on a CPG level, that's one of the newest features that has come out most recently and has enabled us to get a ratio of about 7.1 to 1."

Cons

"Synchronous replication uses space inefficiently."
"The solution does not scale well at all. It's a box, so we only have so much space to work with."
"It's kind of expensive when you buy the EqualLogic solution because, as you grow, you have to keep buying another controller. It can be more expensive with time."
"Higher price at entry level systems compared to competition."
"It is at the end of support and no longer supported. We have to move our VMware to another storage platform, and we have decided to use Dell PowerStore. We like Dell's products, and it is a new platform with a lot of features."
"The performance isn't as good as, for example, Nimble."
"We are having some issues right now where some of the database operations are recovering and we find there are so many IOPS that EqualLogic fans cannot handle it."
"There is no inline deduplication capability."
"We are still waiting for the compression feature to be deployed."
"Technical Support: The parts replacement is good, however, as for serious technical issues, getting to someone who actually knows enough to help is usually a challenge."
"I would like to see the ability to be able to migrate to newer versions of the 3PAR without having to take any of our data offline and be able to upgrade on the fly."
"One big thing I would like to see is to be able to promote a virtual volume while it's still exporting."
"Yes, we have had a few issues with stability."
"HPE Mexico takes a lot of time to register and deliver. After we negotiated the final price, HPE releases it and then it takes 48 to 72 hours to deliver it."
"Deduplication on FC disks needs improvement."
"This solution is becoming dated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
"I didn't buy it. It was another person seven years ago. So, I don't really know, but all storage platforms cost a lot of money. It is probably in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for."
"It seemed expensive at first, but the durability lowered the cost of ownership dramatically over time."
"All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
"Dell EqualLogic PS series can improve its scale-out feature. Sometimes the customer has a limited budget for storage expansion. When they want to expand their capacity, they need to buy a complete controller plus storage capacity, which sometimes is out of their budget. If Dell EqualLogic PS series support could scale up the environment in which only hard drive extension controllers should be supported, then customers can expand within a lower budget."
"I don't think I would say that the product is less expensive...The product's price is not an issue for our company, considering the relationship we have with Dell and the customer support we receive."
"Licensing is pretty straightforward."
"Initial packages include all upgrades and services."
"It's a good price."
"We went with 3PAR because we have HP-UX systems. Since we already knew HP-UX, they offered us a significantly cheaper solution than the one that we had for storage."
"The SSD is a little bit expensive."
"It has greatly reduced my management overhead time."
"The licensing cost for HPE 3PAR StoreServ is expensive."
"Our licensing cost are $32,000 annually."
"The price of HPE 3PAR StoreServ is reasonable, but buying upgrade licenses are priced very high. There are additional fees."
"We purchased the total package for approximately $60,000."

Measuring Up: EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR
Leading up to EMC World 2015, IT Central Station asked how I would compare EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR. Until recently, the flash storage conversation in my organization and many others has centered on XtremIO and Pure Storage, the leaders of the all-flash array (AFA) space. To that end, I've written a…
