Supports flexible hosting needs through seamless upgradability and strong monitoring capabilities
The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me are the feature richness and the upgradability. I really love the way that it is so dynamically applicable for every situation, and they manage to have an all-in-one solution for every single situation. Dell PowerEdge has supported the growth and operational success of my company through its great compute power and price-to-performance ratio. Every time Dell is at the top of its game for us, and there is just no other brand for us that is able to reach that kind of price-to-performance ratio. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has features that specifically cater to the needs of my small company, such as iDRAC. The iDRAC system is a complete feature set for managing servers and hardware technically and monitoring-wise. It really fits in our system and our ecosystem, and monitoring-wise, it is excellent. They have all these sensors available via different protocols and end points, which I love, and the ability to manage and control everything via the iDRAC interface is just a welcome bonus. In our use case, Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very flexible. It is another computer which helps a lot because of the durability over time. They keep running, making scalability for getting more of those resources in our environment so easy.

Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall, I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers nine to ten as the product has maintained a strong reputation over time."
"Using Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers has helped reduce unplanned production downtime to almost zero."
"It is a very stable product, something that we use reliably for backups and for our main server for a long time, and we would definitely buy another."
"We do not have much workload right now. We are happy with whatever we have tested."
"Overall, I would rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers ten out of ten."
"This solution is very easy to use, and for every option there is documentation with at least two lines of explanation, so you are provided with excellent instructions."
"The initial setup is so easy."
"My experience with customer service has been positive."
"In our circumstance, it fit our needs and has performed as advertised."
"The product is very stable and it does what it needs to do."
"It's a new architecture, really scalable and programmable. When you look at SDN propositions it fits very well in a next-gen data center."
"If you're looking for a solution that you know is going to work and that you're going to get some solid support and backing from the vendor throughout your process from start to finish, it's going to be the NetApp guys."
"Very scalable, and we’ve been very pleased."
"Across the board, this solution is very stable."
"It's reliable and scalable. I can sleep well at night and not have to get woken up at three in the morning because something went bump."
"We have seen a 20 percent improvement in application performance."

Cons

"We are expecting that the price of Dell PowerEdge R-Series is quite higher than others."
"In older models, for instance, Melanox adapters remain a necessity, and they have sporadically caused complications."
"I would prefer more flexibility when configuring Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. Some challenges we see when looking for a server include wanting a two CPU server without necessarily needing a larger server."
"I understand that the licensing can be confusing, and I would prefer to see that aspect become simpler."
"There are sometimes challenges with maintenance renewal, particularly with responsiveness, which sometimes takes a long time before we get feedback."
"As the disks and memory should be expandable, I would highlight scalability as an issue."
"There are issues, of course, but not major issues. On a scale of one to 10, the stability is a nine."
"Speaking on the XE series specifically, the internal service to the system, if you need to get to a DIMM or anything similar, requires that you remove all three risers and the storage controller. It's not very internally service friendly."
"I would like to see more orchestration tools in FlexPod because we virtually end up with integrating the v-orchestration tool within FlexPod. I would like to see something like that included within FlexPod."
"FlexPod can improve with a single control management interface to manage all aspects and components of the solution."
"However, for a lot of the upper/mid-level market, it is probably a little bit of overkill in terms of the day-to-day administration, and even the initial configuration to get it up and running."
"With us being Oracle service providers for Oracle databases and applications, it's a niche area, and FlexPod still isn't there."
"It is not as easy as a hyperconverged solution, but you are going to have a hard time finding that anywhere, where you can just plugin and run a deployment app."
"We dislike going online with the robot stuff. Many times, it has delayed our reaching out to a real support engineer."
"It is overkill for our environment."
"If there were going to be any improvements, they should probably be UI improvements, overall. It can get a little kludgy sometimes when trying to figure out what to do."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It has generally been very competitive. It is not the best, but it is very competitive."
"The price of Dell EMC PowerEdge Rack Servers is reasonable compared to other solutions."
"We have a strong agreement in place with our parent company, that typically ensures favorable pricing terms for us, although occasionally we may need to negotiate with Dell representatives for further discounts to provide competitive pricing to our customers."
"It's a bit of a shock when you have to find the money, but the pricing is very competitive, so I'm happy with that."
"We would prefer it if the pricing were for half the cost. We have been expanding our company, and my boss stated that we must save money."
"They are affordable. Even during our recent procurement, the cost of Dell servers was lower than that of HPE."
"The cost structure associated with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers presents itself as a potential point of contention for budget-conscious consumers, as it could be more strategically positioned to compete within the broader marketplace."
"The pricing is fair enough."
"We purchased FlexPod though Datalink."
"As a startup, for the amount of budget we have and the amount we spend, we are getting what we expected."
"It is cheaper than other products. For example, Dell EMC VxBlock is more expensive."
"Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
"The investment has been great. We put our money into it and it has given us something that we have been able to rely on for years."
"Everything is purchased, so we do not do any leasing with this product."
"It is expensive. My company is small. When you look at the price point, this is a big thing for us to invest in."
"We fear high availability so we can't buy from different providers."
