Provides seamless backup integration and long-term reliability for enterprise data protection
The price is quite high; this product is not considered cheap. Additionally, if you use higher availability boxes, they also come at a premium price. However, they provide business continuity, which is the main reason why companies invest in this solution. Tape is slow; when restoring several virtual machines or databases amounting to several terabytes, Dell PowerProtect Data Domain represents the fastest and most reliable solution, ensuring great integration with backup software. If a customer has limited budget constraints, they may opt for cheaper external storage comprised of just a bunch of disks and utilize it for backup, as backup is not a business-critical service. However, I see great value in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain because it is fully automated, features great integration with backup software, and provides good value for money. I would rate software support as a ten, while I would give hardware support a seven. I never give any product a perfect score; I think Dell PowerProtect Data Domain deserves a nine. The only minor problems are the certificate issue and the price. These certificate issues are quite rare and mainly arise when we forget to restart and upgrade the box for several years.

Granular recovery, replication is good and offers good speed
It is for any kind of company that uses their own servers. From a global perspective, our clients are small-sized companies. All the SMEs, compared to the Slovakian market, are quite small. It's a small market with small companies. They just want to enhance security and follow regulations It's…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We are very satisfied with this solution. It's easy to use and efficient."
"The backup is very secure, the deduplication using EMC is very good, we are able to make systems and handle random cloning, and EMC is a very stable solution for making backups."
"Most cases are related to databases, such as Oracle and MySQL."
"The most valuable features of PowerProtect DD are the immutable storage and the AI scanning."
"I like the different features; we work closely with Dell on different products and features, which is why we use them all."
"The EMC Data Domain product is a real success and customers which have never bought EMC products are now buying Data Domain..."
"The dedup and data compression actually benefit our floor space in the data center, and we are able to reduce our backup storage, which used to be a legacy large footprint, into something more concise."
"The most valuable features of this product are its guaranteed reliability and its duplication capability."
"The solution's most valuable aspect is its ability to back up a physical server to another physical or virtual server."
"The local mount utility is most valuable. I do restores fairly regularly. Thankfully, I have not ever lost an entire server that I've had to resurrect, but I certainly have people who erroneously saved over a file or have deleted a file. So, we've done that quite a bit. We still have the DL4000 appliance, and we had, kind of, extrapolated that out over a five-year period. Now, we're in year six, so we had to add storage, which we did as a SAN next to DL4000, but prior to adding in that extra storage, we, here and there, would run into situations where for whatever reason, it would want to be pulling a new base image, and then we would run out of storage. So, we would utilize the archive feature and archive the old data that we want to hang on to, but we don't necessarily need it taking up current data storage. Being able to export out really old data is most valuable to us. Then, we just store that on a NAS that we keep in another building."
"Definitely, the mount and recovery points are the most valuable, because if someone deletes a file or something, or if something gets corrupted, we can always revert back to an old change because our repository goes about a month back. The ability to roll back files and the ability to roll back servers is really important."
"The solution offers a 100% guarantee that if it's backed up you will be able to restore it onto any platform you want."
"The general backup for replication and virtual standby are the most valuable aspects; it does what it says it does and is a decent tool for not a big budget."
"Disk backup (archiving to the cloud) is its most valuable feature because it provides for our disaster recovery plan."
"Probably the point-in-time recovery is most valuable. The other piece that is really nice is that you can mount a whole server at any point in time. So, you can mount the server with all the drives to a Z drive or something like that. It will just mount it all up, and your data is accessible right there on one drive, which is nice."
"The fact that it can take a snapshot of everything on a server and replicate it on another server in real-time is the most valuable feature."

Cons

"I would like to see some kind of integration with the ransomware in the next release."
"The price could be improved."
"The Dell PowerProtect DD architecture offers several significant features. One is DD Boost, which is utilized at both the source and destination sites for application processing."
"The price is quite high; this product is not considered cheap."
"The usage of this solution is a bit difficult to develop processes, and it takes a long time to market permits."
"We are not able to deal directly with the OEM we have to go to their partners in Nigeria."
"If I were a manager for this infrastructure, I would look into load balancing for cost, maintenance after sale, and improving Dell PowerProtect DD."
"There needs to be better ease of use with like APIs and automation and things of that nature."
"I think the self-paced learning and knowledge base can always be improved so that users can self-service without having to contact either a reseller or Quest."
"It is quite surprising to me that the configuration cannot be backed up automatically, and I think that Rapid Recovery should have an option for scheduled configuration backup."
"In terms of what needs improvement in Quest Rapid Recovery, though the solution is seamless, right now, they are just giving the software which means we'll need to arrange the hardware."
"It would be nice if you could deploy the agent without having to reboot."
"It's very expensive which is why I want to drop it."
"Sometimes, when we have certain batches for Windows, it needs to be restarted. When it's restarted, the service is configured as a delayed start. Sometimes, you need to wait too long until it rights itself, or you have to do it manually."
"There is room for improvement in customer service and support. I would like to see faster response time."
"It's buggy. That's a big problem. We're arranging to get rid of it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We usually buy products at the end year, and the license is included."
"If we do not move to the cloud solution and stay with our on-premise version we will miss some new features."
"I can't remember what the license costs are. They might be paid monthly or every two months."
"Dell PowerProtect DD's pricing is expensive, and there is no option for perpetual licensing."
"This is one of the more expensive backup solutions on the market."
"On a scale where one represents high price, and ten represents low price, I rate the solution a five, which means that the solution is of medium pricing."
"Pricing is related to size. A lower range solution might be about $33,000. My customers use higher range versions with a price of around $100,000. That's the price for both the hardware and software."
"The price of the solution and support for Dell PowerProtect DD is expensive. We have customers that cannot upgrade to a newer version of the solution because the support is too expensive."
"Licensing fees are based on the amount of data that you want to store, which is related to how many customers you want to cover."
"I believe the basic license comes with six terabytes, whereas a lot of the other ones are four terabytes. From the price point, it seemed a lot better than the comparative models, such as Datto, Barracuda, and some of the others. I believe Barracuda was about $15,000 for four terabytes, and Quest was around $12,000 for six terabytes. Pricing is based on the period. There is just the maintenance fee that you have to pay annually, or you can pay for a three-year or four-year contract. This includes Premier Support."
"It is a little expensive. However, I haven't compared it to other solutions. Being a nonprofit, it is always good to have nonprofit discounts on products."
"The pricing is on the higher end."
"When I purchased the change to the license, it was $1,600. I think that was for changing the license. I don't believe that I had to purchase technical support in a while, so I must've bought maybe for five years, but I don't feel there was a huge cost involved in technical support. Its cost was definitely worth it because we've had a fantastic experience with them."
"It's very expensive which is why I want to drop it. They charge us per core and we have a six-core server. It's expensive to pay for maintenance charges. I want to switch to something cheaper."
"I don't think the licensing for the product is very expensive."
"Its price is okay. It is reasonable in terms of the way it works."
