Containerization has standardized deployments and drives faster, more reliable delivery
As Docker is already a very mature tool, there are areas where it can be improved based on real-world usage. One area I consider is the Windows container experience. The pain point here is that Windows containers are heavier and slower than Linux containers because I have worked in both environments and felt that Windows containers are heavier and slower than Linux containers. This also limits the ecosystem and tooling maturity compared to Linux containers. Improvements could include performance optimization and better parity with Linux container features. Apart from that, observability and debugging is another area. The pain point is the limited native metrics available and limited logging and tracing features. Improvements could include adding a good amount of metrics, logging, and tracing, as well as better built-in observability features and easier container introspection. Network complexity is also present. I face issues with Docker networking that can become confusing in complex setups, and debugging container-to-container issues is not always intuitive. Improvements can be made with simpler networking abstractions and better built-in troubleshooting tools. Docker is excellent for containerization and CI/CD, but it can be improved in areas of built-in security, network simplicity, and observability. These points should be kept in mind and worked on.

Centralized cluster deployment has improved remote site operations and supported hybrid application models
The initial setup was not straightforward. It was challenging, but then it was manageable. It is relatively easy, but we do have challenges. Not everything is straightforward. There are things that can be addressed. In a couple of cases, we needed some third-party expertise to ensure that we did it correctly. In most cases, we were able to do it on our own. When hosting something on Azure and connecting with an HTTPS link, there are some dependencies that need to be tweaked on Nutanix. Otherwise, it does not communicate with the on-premises infrastructure. There were a few tweaks that we struggled with for almost a couple of days. That was not part of the original design manual. We needed to make some tweaks within the cluster ourselves to achieve the goal. There were some shortcomings in the design that we had to customize ourselves to achieve, especially integration with Azure Cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The capability of the solution to convert an application into a Docker image is a vital functionality"
"The most valuable features of Docker are its security, detailed documentation, and ease of use, and the Docker Swarm is not as complex as Kubernetes."
"Docker offers a resilient system with minimal failure chances and optimized performance"
"The lift and shift creates a lightweight image."
"I think that with Docker, it is easy to deploy it on different platforms."
"The scalability of Docker is good."
"The most valuable feature of Docker is its portability, ease of security management, and low resource usage."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the Dockerfile, which makes the life of developers easy. Developers get a real understanding of container creation."
"We have great support from Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) and the experience has been excellent; the relationship maintained with the team in India is particularly strong, and the support directly from Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) itself has been exceptional."
"Compared to Azure or Amazon, Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) is not as secure, but the new edition may improve these functionalities."
"Before working with Nutanix Kubernetes (NKP), I was working on Dockers, which required separate setups for each microservice, application, or web server, but now everything is under one umbrella, allowing us to manage it all without going here and there."
"Migration from public cloud to private cloud and vice versa is actually seamless using Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), making it very handy when providing a Kubernetes platform for customers needing on-premises solutions during application modernization."
"Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) is a centralized platform that allows us to deploy different clusters from a centralized location."
"The platform is easy to set up, maintain, and update."
"The stability of Nutanix is exceptional; when operational, it performs flawlessly and demonstrates remarkable resilience."
"The platform is stable."

Cons

"The solution is not easy to manage and it is one of the reasons why people introduce orchestration tools to manage it."
"Docker needs to improve its pricing."
"As for improving Docker, I would like to see enhancements in its user interface and documentation to make it even more user-friendly and accessible. I believe Docker will expand its scope and reduce limitations to support more applications, both online and offline. For instance, in scenarios like deployments on ships or during upgrades, Docker can continue to offer software services and container-based intelligence."
"Docker management is very difficult when we have a large number of nodes."
"If you install Docker on a host, it creates its own firewalls. It can become an issue. Usually, when you want to install Docker, you need to restart the firewall or restart the active tables on the machine, but this is not the case with Kubernetes. It uses the default set up by the next administrator, but with Docker, you have to restart the firewall and restart Docker before the firewall on the system will be okay. If you do not the rules will not be created."
"I advise new users to review their website, commands, and the steps for creating images."
"The solution could improve with a GUI instead of only a command line interface. Having to use the command line interface can be a hassle."
"Management can be improved with the necessary tools for orchestration."
"A significant limitation of the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) is its requirement for extensive Kubernetes knowledge."
"In Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), I believe the migration process needs to be much simpler, similar to other Kubernetes platforms we are using, with all steps being clear and direct to facilitate an easier experience for everyone."
"They have to improve their marketplace offering for Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) which is currently limited."
"Regarding the stability and reliability of Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), I sometimes worry about incidents that occur, but we don't receive a clear explanation of what happened."
"There were some shortcomings in the design that we had to customize ourselves to achieve, especially integration with Azure Cloud."
"There are some limitations with the non-air gap version as it requires complete internet access, which poses restrictions due to government regulations."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Regarding pricing, we primarily use AWS for our deployments since we have funding for it. We don't spend much on Docker-specific services, just the containerization product. Docker Hub isn't particularly expensive either, so overall, the pricing is pretty reasonable."
"Pricing is based on the number of users."
"It's an open-source solution, so it doesn't cost anything"
"For commercial use, it's about $30 per month. The license itself isn't expensive, but if there are many users, the price becomes high."
"Docker is cost-effective and open-source."
"Since Docker is an open-source solution, it is free of cost."
"Docker is a free tool."
"The product is not expensive."
