Data modeling has transformed regulatory reporting and collaboration across cloud environments

In erwin Data Modeler, areas that have room for improvement include performance improvements. I see that large models sometimes cause it to be slow when opening. Impact analysis can lag as well. Version control is another aspect. If we have developed a current version, it is not integrated with Git where we can easily compare different versions. UI modernization is also something we cannot utilize as it is primarily for development. Additionally, cloud-specific optimizations are needed when it comes to Snowflake or Databricks. When it comes to AI aspects, auto-suggestions for normalization or identifying primary, foreign, or surrogate keys are areas that can be improved.

Cost-effective, integrates with the Office tools, and allows us to articulate all entities across the enterprise on one platform

The refresh cycles for our dashboards could be better. I keep complaining about that. The refresh is supposed to be once a day, but I would love it if it was real-time so that if I make a change to the data in iServer, I should see those changes immediately reflected in the dashboards. They use Power BI, and it seems they've scheduled their refresh to be once a day, which is not that good for us. We've had some issues with the integration between Visio and iServer because sometimes the add-in that allows you to do that integration takes a lot of memory and then your Visio crashes. However, I've not experienced this issue for some time, so it was probably fixed in the recent version. Also, if I copy a large amount of data and I want to copy from one Visio file to another, I have had a case where it suddenly just closes Visio without saving. So, that integration could be more smooth. There should be ease of integration with other systems in our environment such as SysAid. I understand that there is an integration to ServiceNow, but we use SysAid. We need to be able to say that when there's an incident that impacts or requires a change in a particular component, ServiceNow or SysAid should be able to communicate to Orbus that this component is about to change. Similarly, when it comes to discovery or when a new architecture change has happened in the enterprise, we should be able to detect the change in the baseline Enterprise Architecture. There should be such advanced automation. The visibility of our models is limited to those to whom we have assigned licenses. I would've loved it if everyone in the organization could at least see the diagrams. The licensing should be there for those who need to make updates or changes.

You can't look at the DDL and explicitly understand the primary/foreign key relationships that exist between our tables, so the referential integrity is not easily understood. erwin has allowed me to explicitly document that and create ERDs. When it sees something is nonstandard or inaccurate, it will export the better data out. Then, I can easily see which entities and attributes are not inline or standard. I can easily make changes to what was uploaded to the Bulk Editor. When taking on a new project, it can save you about a half a day on a big project across an entire team."

"The solution's ability to compare and synchronize data sources with data models is fantastic. We use it for that on a regular basis to make sure that changes haven't been made to the database outside of the modeling process. I can take existing databases and reverse engineer them and understand their structure within 15 minutes. If I didn't have Data Modeler it would take hours. It increases our productivity and helps in understanding our legacy application."

It has become a pain point to merge the models from individual desktops and get them into a single data model, when multiple data modelers are working on a particular project. It becomes a nightmare for the senior data modeler to bring them together, especially when it comes to recreating them when you want to merge them."

"In terms of improvements, support could have been better in terms of installation, especially of workgroups. We struggled quite a bit to get it up and running. Collaboration could have been better from an installation perspective, but it is trivial as compared to what we use it for. Other than that, I don't have much feedback. It works pretty well, and the fact that we've been using it for more than a decade shows that it is quite solid."

I would like to be able to produce graphs and additional things right in the tool, instead of having to export the data somewhere else."

"The Bulk Editor needs improvement. If you had something that was a local model to your local machine, you could connect to the API, then it would write directly into the repository. However, when you have something that is on the centralized server, that functionality did not work. Then, you had to export out to a CSV and upload up to the repository. It would have been nice to be able to do the direct API without having that whole download and upload thing. Maybe I didn't figure it out, but I'm pretty sure that didn't work when it was a model that sat on a centralized repository."
