Managing limited lineage across clouds has highlighted missing connectors but has supported basic cataloging
There are no specific areas of Google Dataplex I think could be improved because that is not our priority. To improve or enhance Google Dataplex, I would point out the connections; there is a lack of connections, and the variety of databases are not in a position to connect. I assess the usefulness of Google Dataplex's centralized management layer in simplifying data operations across environments as not there yet because the connections are lacking. If I look at the environments of something such as Ericsson, there are so many environments; to connect to each and every system, they are not there yet.

Automated data discovery has streamlined management while configuration remains complex
Compared to Big-ID, Microsoft Purview Data Governance looks complicated to me. I do not feel it has a good user-level UI. The interface feels a little complicated compared to Big-ID. I did not appreciate the configuration part. It felt complex, whereas when I went for a Big-ID demo, the interface looked better and was easier to understand for any user.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"For Google Cloud data, Google Dataplex's AI-driven data classification has really helped; the out-of-the-box capabilities are good, and they have good classifiers."
"One of the best features is the classification rules, especially the scan rule sets. They are really useful, especially when we need to understand the current data the company has to ensure that all the problematic data can be put under someone's responsibility."
"Microsoft Purview stands out for its automatic data recovery system, which prioritizes critical data for the fastest restoration."
"I really like the entire system for auto-labeling content. It's a very refined system. I use the Keyword Query Language to define refined string-based metadata, and then I can really go deep into the specific data with the specific properties labeled in such and such a way."
"The feature that I find most valuable is its ability to block unintended data sharing, like forcing unencrypted emails to be encrypted. We're evolving technologically, so people aren't always working from their desks. Our people are on the move. We have data everywhere. For example, in airlines, they're mobile and working from one door to another. They can't carry a computer from one station to another. That's where a lot of airlines use iPads. Securing and integrating iPads is helpful."
"Purview helps mitigate risk and allows us to govern the information being shared among apps and devices."
"The product has helped us save both time and money."
"Purview's ability to connect to iOS, Mac, and Android devices is critical."
"It is designed to seamlessly connect to various data sources, which is particularly beneficial for our customers who primarily use Microsoft technologies."

Cons

"I assess the usefulness of Google Dataplex's centralized management layer in simplifying data operations across environments as not there yet because the connections are lacking."
"Microsoft Purview's compliance processes for handling various Mac and iOS devices could be significantly improved."
"Some of the menu headings may not be easy to understand for some people."
"We have had some issues automating our document management with Power Apps. I haven't been super-disappointed with anything except for Power Apps, which kinda drives me nuts. I think it's because I am a coder who can do things properly, and I keep trying to do things there, but it's not working out the way. The security team is pretty quick. I'm kind of a thorn in their side. I always try to get around stuff. They haven't come to me for anything saying, "Hey, I can't find this information." They're pretty good. Maybe, there's a lack of documentation, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for our team."
"Two features are unsupported—custom insights and the DLP component—that would be beneficial to me as a consultant and for the customer in terms of security and monitoring. Regarding security, DLP would provide a more granular level of data masking. Custom insights would offer more detailed monitoring and alerts that can notify customers of failures or anything requiring urgent action."
"Another area for improvement is in managing the business glossary terms. If they could provide the same type of method that we use to configure the scan rule sets, that would be helpful. Currently, there is no option like this, so we have to do it manually. Automatic detection would be great."
"One area for improvement is the detection of data types. This is really important. It has some of that functionality, but I consider it very limited. Maybe they can add some custom programming or machine learning could be particularly useful for the detection of the nature of the data."
"Data quality has been a highly requested feature among customers."
"Frequent daily updates from Microsoft can cause interface elements like buttons to appear and disappear, making navigation unpredictable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The categorization within the licensing could be improved. There are a lot of solutions within Microsoft Purview. If the licensing could be a bit clearer and the solutions could be better categorized according to function and across multiple environments, that would be excellent. The licensing is very confusing."
"Microsoft Purview is priced in the middle. It isn't the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive. It's affordable compared to other public cloud services."
"The solution is extremely affordable for the K-12 space."
"Microsoft Purview requires a Microsoft 365 license and is included with an E5 license."
"To get the full features of Purview, we currently need E5 enterprise licenses, which are expensive."
"The pricing is decent. It is neither too low nor too high. Given its capabilities, the pricing is justified."
"The price is reasonable because most of our clients already have an E3 license, which makes implementation easy."
"Purview's price is pretty high when you factor in storage costs."
