Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Is stable and has a user-friendly dashboard and a good interface
We installed Hillstone T-Series after a ransomware attack. The dashboard and user interface are very good We cannot secure a specific IP class with this firewall. Another loophole with Hillstone T-Series is that when we connect through WiFi and turn our hot spot on, all who connect through the…

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are it is one of the most mature firewalls in the UTM bundle."
"This version is stable. I don't have any issues with this solution, in our environment, it works well."
"Web filtering is the most useful feature."
"Its user interface is good, and it is always working fine."
"I think FortiGate is more reliable, consistent, and easy to learn."
"It is one of my favorite solutions to work with, and I would much rather work with it than Cisco Firepower, for example, even though I've got 20 years of Cisco experience with different firewalls, I would much prefer this solution."
"We are using the FortiGate 100D series. VPN, firewall, anti-malware, OTM, and intrusion prevention are useful features."
"Good anti-malware and web filtering features."
"Hillstone supports IOT setup and detecting intrusions from IOT or CCTV connectivity, and with this solution, we can also detect unauthorized devices plugged into the CCTV network and sound the alarm to the administrator."
"We found some limitations with Fortinet FortiGate, and we are satisfied with Hillstone T-Series right now."
"It has been stable so far."
"The only firewall able to monitor traffic from a CCTV network. Can detect unauthorized devices plugged into the network, which standard firewalls can't do."
"We installed Hillstone T-Series after a ransomware attack. The dashboard and user interface are very good."
"The features I have found best are ease of use, GUI, and performance."
"The initial setup was simple and fast."
"An incomparable stability is achieved with other firewall systems."
"It has a very nice web interface, and it is very simple to use. The way policies are working is also good."
"The features I have found best are ease of use, GUI, and performance."
"pfSense made my life easier for controlling users and their bandwidth."
"With pfSense we have low balances for the internet and the internet is always available, and when our service provider fails, it takes communication to another service so employees always have access to the servers that they need."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is that it is an open-source tool and is available at a very low cost."

Cons

"The tech support is not excellent; this is where Fortinet saves money compared to others... But plenty of free, clear and public documentation is available and this compensates for the most part the tech support shortcomings."
"There could be more modifications."
"Compared to some other products, the DLP is not at par for the moment."
"They could do more work on FortiAnalyzer in terms of the data and the information coming from it."
"It could always be more secure."
"They could simplify their deployment process, especially when customers have existing devices."
"The room for improvement is about the global delivery time period. Usually I need to wait for almost one month to deliver it overseas. So if you can shorten the deliver time it'd be great."
"The monitoring and the visibility, in this proxy, is very weak. I would for them to develop better visibility, monitoring, and reporting."
"Licensing is not cheap."
"Licensing is not cheap, but there are customers who will buy because they understand that this has a cost involved and they will cater their budget for that."
"They have a very good technical support team, but I think there are some communication issues due to language differences."
"They have a very good technical support team, but I think there are some communication issues due to language differences."
"Another loophole with Hillstone T-Series is that when we connect through WiFi and turn our hot spot on, all who connect through the hotspot get all the functions, and the security does not work."
"We appreciate the flexibility of the Netgate pfSense solution, but we have waited approximately two years for new updates to the Community Edition. We are now moving to OPNsense."
"We have to be connected to the internet to download the OS in real time, which, in some cases, is not possible."
"The solution’s interface must be improved."
"Support for third-party hardware is less documented, not being their preferred option. For most things, it is pretty solid. Other firewalls such as SonicWall offer more protection features such as deep packet inspection."
"They could make it easier to configure packages."
"There's a bit of a learning curve during the initial implementation."
"They have abandoned the Community edition. There has not been an update in a year."
"I would like to see an additional wizard added to pfSense when you add some of their other packages. You can add a package from pfSense to do a particular task, but you need to be a product expert or willing to spend time on the Internet for hours and hours to figure out how to configure some of those features correctly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet prices are around $600 for the small 40F model, and for licenses, the simplest option is about $300 for a year. They sell licenses that can last for 1, 2, 3, or 5 years."
"The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
"The price is highly competitive when compared to other brands that offer similar functionality."
"Before choosing a piece of equipment you have to take into account the cost-benefit offered by each one. Sometimes it is not worth paying a very cheap price to have a minimum level of security."
"The pricing is better compared to other solutions like Check Point, Arista, or Cisco."
"It is not expensive as compared to Cisco."
"It is a good product from a price perspective versus functionality."
"The pricing is based on a licensing model for each IPS in your environment."
"We got a much cheaper price than that provided by Fortinet right now."
"On a scale from one to ten, with one being low and ten being high price, I would rate the price of Hillstone T-Series at three. There are no additional costs other than renewal costs."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"The pricing seems fair overall, but I think they need more reasonably priced options for very small offices."
"pfSense is open-source."
"Looking at what it does, I think that it is fairly priced."
"Their pricing is quite reasonable."
"I think Netgate should charge something nominal like $50 a year for the community edition to deter people from using it for everything."
"While pfSense hardware from Netgate might have a higher upfront cost, I've had very little trouble with it. Plus, buying from them directly helps fund the software's development, making it a worthwhile investment in my eyes."
"pfSense's pricing or licensing model is very affordable."
