Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Backup storage has shrunk dramatically with deduplication but still needs stronger security options
The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor. There's no native air gap capability right now, and for security-conscious environments, that's a gap. The configuration export is also limited in QoreStor. If you want to document your setup or migrate configuration to a new instance, it requires more manual work than it should.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Altaro Hyper-v backup is not pricey and provides great features to secure your production data on Microsoft Hyper-V clusters."
"Reverse Delta is Altaro proprietary backup deduplication technology. With Reverse Delta, the latest version of a file is always made available in its entirety, not as a delta file."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced, is a best value for its price, and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"Since moving to Altaro, we feel that backing up and restoring files has become much more efficient in our organization."
"In Hyper-V, I think there are many valuable features, including replication between different hosts, high availability, live migration where I can migrate between one host to another, as well as incremental disaster recovery, which are very good."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"The product has many valuable features for handling backup needs, including replication, live migration, and incremental disaster recovery."
"Customer Service: Extremely good, and the turnaround is less than a day."
"I would rate QoreStor a ten out of ten for what it offers for the price."
"Quest QoreStor is very stable compared to our previous solution."
"Quest QoreStor definitely saved us money."
"Overall, it simplifies the management of backup and gives me a more secure feeling that my data is going to be available if I need to retrieve it."
"Deduplication is the most valuable feature. It saves us a lot of space. When we back up 100 terabytes of data, after dedupe, it only uses maybe five to six terabytes for the disk space in QoreStor."
"QoreStor has helped us to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premises. We've been using the same devices for quite a while, and so it lets us keep using them as opposed to having to rip out all that hardware and create a new on-prem solution. The advantage here is even if we had to retire the hardware tomorrow, the QoreStor part doesn't change. We just have to have additional hardware and put the solution back on whatever hardware we pick and it'll do the same thing."
"The extreme compression of data is a big thing for us. We were looking for an online backup solution, and QoreStor is very good in terms of data compression. It helps us minimize the required storage in the Blob Storage environment."
"QoreStor has helped to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premise by at least 90%."

Cons

"It would be good to if they would expand the functionality to be able to backup normal servers without Hyper-V."
"The replication time between virtual machines is slow."
"However it has No support for Tape Drive backup – So no Disk-to-tape backup is possible."
"Availability of physical server backup would be an added advantage."
"The software does have occasional problems with shadow copy but restarting the services rectifies this."
"Unable to restore a VM when I needed it. Tried multiple hosts. Connected via gig switch and would never complete."
"The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer."
"Storage usage: you have often to manually free disk spaces."
"Overall, I am happy with this solution, but a way to export configuration settings would be beneficial. After everything is set up and configured, there should be a way to export the configuration. In case something happens to the QoreStor server, and we need to reinstall and configure everything, being able to import the configuration would be helpful. This feature does not currently exist."
"The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing in the world."
"There can be some kind of monitoring solutions to alert users to issues with the appliance or software, making it easy for customers to monitor their systems in the field."
"Support is one point of improvement for Quest QoreStor. Support is sometimes not adequate."
"In terms of improvement, we would like to have an Air Gap feature to prevent a virus from attaching to something. So that when we don't do a backup, we want the QoreStor to stay offline. It would be a nice feature to have."
"The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor."
"They could improve on support a little bit. We have not had to engage their support much, but when we do have issues, it can take longer to get things resolved."
"The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing. I worked a lot with Quest engineers, especially in the early days when we were first testing it and trying it out. I actually had some of the developers working with us at one point because they were going through these point releases, and I was having trouble getting it to work in this S3-compatible situation. We got it all working eventually, but setup is definitely not the easiest thing in the world."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"The pricing is okay,"
"The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"The pricing is good. It is competitive for a managed services provider. I like the ability to pay by the terabyte, allowing for an incremental cost that we and our customers can afford, so the solution grows with the customer."
"Its pricing model is very attractive. You have one price, and you get everything from QoreStor."
"The cost is per terabyte, and overall, the cost was reasonable when compared to some competitors."
"Quest QoreStor's pricing is affordable. We evaluated Veeam, a well-known company for backup solutions, but found their pricing to be quite high. Veeam's price was almost double. For us, Quest QoreStor is very affordable."
