Virtualization has reduced licensing costs and improved integration but still needs better performance insight
Integrations bring the biggest benefit to us. We use half of our virtual machines that are Microsoft, so it works better hosted in Hyper-V compared to VMware. Clustering and failover capabilities in the product help with our availability. It helped because we switched to Hyper-V because it was lower cost than paying for high availability in VMware. We need Microsoft licenses for virtual machines, so it costs less than buying two solutions for that. We have data center editions, so it did not cost us additional money compared to paying for high availability from VMware. I think it helped a little, but not so different compared to VMware regarding security and bandwidth optimization.

Significant backup for containers, but the customer service is terrible
Anyone considering this solution should not compare it to the old versions. They should be a partner with Virtuozzo and run all the certifications. Also, they need a good lab to understand the technology and how they can apply that technology conveniently. This is very commercial software. It does not have support, so you will need to be hands-on. I would rate Odin Virtuozzo a six out of 10 overall.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is stable."
"The solution is highly scalable."
"I value the simplicity of configuration because it has worked as expected for my client."
"The technical support for Hyper-V is excellent, and I rate it as nine out of ten."
"We've probably seen a 50 percent speed increase on our SQL server. Hyper-V has also significantly reduced our downtimes with faster boot-up and reboot. If we have to reboot a server, there is maybe two or three minutes of downtime. When we were on a bare-metal server, it could be five to ten minutes due to the total boot time."
"The setup was straightforward and easy for our company. The deployment was fast."
"The tool is very easy to implement, so we can manage it in our company."
"We chose this solution because of the pricing and the simplicity of the product."
"When you run templates on the containers on Virtuozzo they have a lot of back-ups."

Cons

"There needs to be more functionality overall in the Hyper-V manager."
"The only negative thing I heard was that the baseline price is very, very attractive relative to VMware, however, the vCenter counterpart, the thing that brings it all together, is quite pricey."
"It needs to improve compatibility with third party software."
"It would be nice if they provided a free management console that we could use to manage all of the hosts for no additional fee."
"VLAN is not very easy to configure."
"When one server or one virtual machine fails, or one is turned off, the virtualization stops, and we have to initiate again with human intervention."
"The security part of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"The product can be a bit difficult to use."
"Odin Virtuozzo has poor support and needs to improve."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing and licensing is pretty good."
"There is a license required to use Hyper-V and there are bundle packages you can purchase making it cheaper than other solutions, such as VMware. Additionally, if there is a lot of guest OS that requires Windows, then Microsoft becomes cheaper."
"I recommend Hyper-V to customers with budget constraints."
"We have an agreement with Microsoft, so this came with that solution. The pricing is OK for us."
"It comes with all the features and goodies inside the box, so you do not have to purchase anything else."
"I use the free version of Hyper-V."
"Hyper-V is expensive."
"The Hyper-V pricing and licensing are very good."
"The license for Odin Virtuozzo is based on consumption on demand."

Hyper-V 2012 R2 vs. VMware vSphere 5.5
I was won with Hyper-V 2012R2 recently and the table below based on customer RFP (edited). This articles all about technical, there is not related with TCO/ROI, licensing cost, “political”, etc. Another to noted is the Windows Server 2012 licenses is based on 2 socket CPU, meanwhile…
