Difficult to use, not efficient, but stable
We are using IBM Rational ClearCase in Peru at two large banks for a code repository. However, it is not meant to be used as a repository I have found it very difficult to understand many functionalities in IBM Rational ClearCase. We have had many problems and it is not user-friendly.  I have…

Centralized automation has ensured consistent multischema provisioning and nearly eliminated db errors
The syntax, especially as it is agnostic, is not always 100% transparent. In heavy object management, there should be improvements, and when we have large-scale multitenant environments, the orchestration becomes a bit tedious. But basically, for my use case, it is a tool I recommend 100%. For object management, the problem is the checksum, which has a very strict and sometimes rigid handling. Even if runOnChange is true, helping stored procedures when the code changes, any minor modification or formatting change should be a bit easier. Liquibase flawlessly solves provisioning, maintains consistency between dozens of schemas, has database version controls integrated into Git, has enormous reliability in auditing. However, it lacks native multitenant orchestration, it has a lot of rigidity in checksum management with programmable code, and the use of native SQL within XML does not work entirely well. I give it eight out of ten because it is indispensable and unbeatable for guaranteeing consistency and automatic provisioning in our multitenant architecture. I only deduct a couple of points for the lack of native multitenant orchestration and the occasional rigidity of checksums when modifying MySQL functions.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The tool had features similar to Git for version control. It offered branching and merging capabilities, providing better control over code management. Integration was possible with other tools, including some change management tools. The overall process was normal."
"The features allowed us to meet requirements for SOX and set a centralized guideline for our development teams."
"ClearCase integrates well with other engineering tools and frameworks such as the Eclipse environment."
"Therefore when we started using ClearCase, it was like a miracle."
"IBM Rational ClearCase is a stable solution, and I have not had any difficulty with reliability."
"What I like most is that it is very stable."
"I really appreciate the MultiSite feature; it is important to us due to the global nature of our company, as my team supports developers using ClearCase in at least ten locations worldwide."
"Liquibase has positively impacted my organization by significantly increasing deployment frequency for database changes."
"Liquibase has positively impacted my organization by eliminating the risk around database changes."
"Liquibase has positively impacted my organization by providing a way to manage database migrations instead of maintaining raw SQL, which comes with the issue of not being able to track certain schema updates or new table creations."
"They have some nice features around the automation of rule checking. They have a rules engine that checks the SQL code so that you can actually do your edit checks on the validity of the SQL code. If you don't want certain tables to be able to have certain things done to them, you can have it checked for that. It's a very flexible way to kind of do an automated peer review of the SQL code to catch things before you actually try to deploy it."
"Liquibase has positively impacted my organization by reducing the time spent syncing databases."
"Liquibase has positively impacted my organization by speeding up the deployment process in the CI/CD framework, being much more useful than different solutions for database deployment that we used before."
"Liquibase is a very powerful tool in terms of database automation."
"Our experience has been very, very positive so far."

Cons

"The protection needs to be improved."
"Customer service is mediocre. Technical support is mediocre."
"I have found it very difficult to understand many functionalities in IBM Rational ClearCase. We have had many problems and it is not user-friendly."
"This is an expensive product and the price could be reduced."
"IBM's support of ClearCase is slipping."
"Look for a more modern product. Your suppliers and developers will be happier."
"The solution's UI is slow compared to other tools. It is an old tool."
"One thing we faced issues with is that Liquibase does not show the exact error, which added to the complexity."
"Liquibase can be improved by addressing the issue that changelog files could conflict with Git if they're not modularized properly."
"I have not found many disadvantages with Liquibase. However, it does not have inbuilt rollback management."
"Liquibase contains most of the features that we really need in the project; however, SQL files could be extended by an additional layer of prerequisites since YAML and XML files have that option, and I believe SQL files could also benefit from having more complex prerequisites."
"I believe the official documentation of Liquibase could be more detailed and comprehensive."
"However, it lacks native multitenant orchestration, it has a lot of rigidity in checksum management with programmable code, and the use of native SQL within XML does not work entirely well."
"Regarding Liquibase's AI capabilities, I believe its accuracy and reliability of output could be improved."
"We were not able to delete some of the tables because of a security issue."
