A good solution that can be used for storage, but its performance, configuration, and pricing could be improved
We use IBM Storage Insights for storage and management The most valuable features of IBM Storage Insights are the server and storage. The solution's performance, configuration, and pricing could be improved. I have been using IBM Storage Insights for four to five years. The solution's…

Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of IBM Storage Insights are the server and storage."
"It is a really capable tool and one of the best solutions on the market regarding recovering and the way it functions."
"It is also a product that has been maturing for a long time. This is good because customers need reliability in their enterprise initiatives."
"One of the benefits they should always look at is the total cost of ownership of any solution."
"It scales well for the amount of clients that we use with it."
"The deduplication and compression features are the most valuable features."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is application-aware backups."
"We work very closely together with IBM using their Support Center, but we have a strong contact in their development teams, and we have dedicated people from IBM working with us."
"My organization loves it, because they say it is one of the best product they have ever used."

Cons

"The solution's performance, configuration, and pricing could be improved."
"It's adequate for my core banking, however, I am looking for another solution for all systems. It is not compatible with other operating systems like Windows or Linux, and lacks a consolidated dashboard from Browser Spectrum."
"The product should improve its GUI. It should also support Windows clustering."
"Stability is 50/50. They come out with fixes, but then they break some other stuff."
"I need two separate solutions for virtual and physical systems. I need IBM Spectrum Protect Plus for virtual systems and Spectrum Protect for physical systems and that's a pain. It would be an improvement if they were combined."
"If IBM could provide a partial module, that would be great."
"It's difficult in terms of the configuration at set up. In our case, it required another admin, one person dedicated to the backup."
"The version that we had when I first started made it look really bad. We are talking about commands that should have run in two seconds, but instead took four to eight hours. Other components were sluggish."
"My customers are not always happy with the Level 1 support. Sometimes, it just takes too long for the response to come, which is probably something that needs to be addressed."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"IBM Storage Insights is cheaper than other products."
"The solution is expensive."
"One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
"We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
"You need to put it in a PoC and test it out if you can."
"We have found that the pricing is high in our country."
"Its licensing is complex, and its price is not really reasonable. It is on the expensive side. IBM, in general, is slightly expensive, but with IBM Spectrum for the virtual environment, they are looking into the aspect of helping customers with the cost and providing a cost-effective solution."
"The solution's pricing is fair. Price-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten."
"The product is not cheap."
