Data Architect at a financial services firm with 10,001+ employees
Improved data modeling has reduced system footprint and strengthened finance workflows
I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's. Erwin's metadata management is better in how it handles data. There is a lot more user involvement in managing the metadata, primarily because in IDERA ER_Studio, the logical and physical models are separately defined in the same file, so you have to map them every single time. In Erwin, it has a unified structure, so if you make a change in the logical model, it automatically shows up in the physical model. You have to go through a couple of steps in the IDERA model to make sure everything has moved over. While that is not that inconvenient when you are actually doing development, as far as metadata management, that is prone to things getting dropped and missed. The collaboration tools in IDERA ER_Studio are adequate, but I think with Erwin, there is more of an opportunity for things to crash. Changes can be merged in IDERA more fluidly; however, the locking and sharing are a little bit more defined in Erwin. I think the learning curve for Erwin might be easier than IDERA ER_Studio, especially with connecting to different models and systems.

A solution that offers excellent replication and easy implementation
We primarily use the solution for backup replication The most valuable feature is data replication. Everything about the solution is very simple, which makes it easy to use. The solution could use better dashboards for new users. They can look complicated until you get used to using the…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The data modeling module is important to me because I am a database developer and designer, and I also take part in designing applications and that always starts with data modeling, and it's very fast, reliable, up-to-date, so easy to use, smooth."
"Using this product has improved the way we maintain our models because they have a place where we can keep all of them, and they can be viewed using the web interface."
"It does the job."
"It's much easier to develop the database structure and change it on the fly, rather than doing it manually in SQL Server itself, which saves time."
"The data modeling and reverse engineering features are most important to us."
"My overall rating for the solution is ten out of ten."
"I think ER/Studio Data Architect is priced high, but it comes with user-friendly features."
"I am able to create (and publish) logical data models, apply naming standards using macro, generate the physical models and DDL."
"Customer Service: Excellent; their team is very knowledgeable and responsive."
"The replication portion of the solution is perfect."
"Complete/custom machine real-time replication process (including apply and verification of destination)."
"Knowing that our data is in multiple backup locations, provides us with piece of mind as far as a disaster recovery situation is concerned."
"No system downtime High Availability (HA)."
"We used it solely for IBM AS400 replication for disaster recovery/failover purposes."
"It allowed us to have a stable, low maintenance, worry free disaster recovery solution that we can present to our management and our clients."
"Provides high degree of comfort regarding High Availability (HA)."

Cons

"Tech support is a sticking point with me. I am really disappointed in the tech support. We pay for the Platinum level. It takes hours to get a response."
"It is expensive! Licensing requires a subscription to their support site."
"What needs the most improvement are semantic lineage and usability."
"Overall, I don't like any of the features and I think that it's a poor system."
"Sometimes our version is a little unstable. But I think this problem occurs because our version is old."
"We did have a big issue when we upgraded to the 2016 version. The Team Server portion never did quite install correctly, and/or the database was corrupted, and we never figured it out."
"One limitation I have found in ER/Studio is that when you want to make some changes to the table definitions, you have to go item by item. You cannot do it globally. Another issue concerns defining the foreign keys between the different tables. It is a little more tedious in the ER/Studio than in ERrwin. With ERwin it is direct."
"The number of options can be overwhelming at times. That is not necessarily a bad thing but for a newbie, it can be daunting."
"Customer support is good but they do try to squeeze out those service dollars."
"Switch procedures are not as easy and straightforward as it may seem at first glance."
"Could make it easier to fix object errors."
"I think that there should be a converged effort with IBM for faster remote journal entry reads when the remote journal is in "fire mode"."
"OS version compatibility needs work."
"The version we're using is not portal ready."
"Installation is pretty easy but it can be fairly complicated to setup and configure."
"The product dashboard that comes with the product could use some work."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is priced fairly. It's around the same as erwin and other competitors' costs."
"I'm a firm believer that all software is overpriced these days but, comparatively speaking, I think ER/Studio is worth the money."
"I feel the product's pricing is a good value."
"Pricing is expensive and on the higher-end."
"The solution’s pricing is high."
"The setup cost may have been around $1500 to $2000."
"I use the product's trial version."
"At my previous company using ER/Studio, a database compare took four hours before using the product and 15 minutes after using the product."
