Improved data modeling has reduced system footprint and strengthened finance workflows
I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's. Erwin's metadata management is better in how it handles data. There is a lot more user involvement in managing the metadata, primarily because in IDERA ER_Studio, the logical and physical models are separately defined in the same file, so you have to map them every single time. In Erwin, it has a unified structure, so if you make a change in the logical model, it automatically shows up in the physical model. You have to go through a couple of steps in the IDERA model to make sure everything has moved over. While that is not that inconvenient when you are actually doing development, as far as metadata management, that is prone to things getting dropped and missed. The collaboration tools in IDERA ER_Studio are adequate, but I think with Erwin, there is more of an opportunity for things to crash. Changes can be merged in IDERA more fluidly; however, the locking and sharing are a little bit more defined in Erwin. I think the learning curve for Erwin might be easier than IDERA ER_Studio, especially with connecting to different models and systems.

A solution that offers excellent replication and easy implementation
We primarily use the solution for backup replication The most valuable feature is data replication. Everything about the solution is very simple, which makes it easy to use. The solution could use better dashboards for new users. They can look complicated until you get used to using the…

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Straightforward setup."
"This has helped the new application development team in cross-verifying, and understanding, the current setup, proposing and architecting new solutions for the organisation."
"ER/Studio is excellent for large teams; it scales well to teams of over one hundred plus people."
"We found a lot of duplication, a lot of non-conformity in the way our databases were designed. By identifying these situations, we're able to go back in and try to create a more standardized solution."
"It's much easier to develop the database structure and change it on the fly, rather than doing it manually in SQL Server itself, which saves time."
"It's a great tool for modeling and I'm generally very happy with its features."
"With both onshore and offshore development teams working 18x5 days, it is an easy way to control check-in's while also maintaining schema views."
"We are able to document the data lineage and data flows of our data from one system to another."
"Provides high degree of comfort regarding High Availability (HA)."
"We were able to perform major system maintenance on our production system after performing a switch or production role swap."
"By implementing remote journals, we have put the load on the target system as opposed to the source."
"No system downtime High Availability (HA)."
"The replication portion of the solution is perfect."
"Knowing that our data is in multiple backup locations, provides us with piece of mind as far as a disaster recovery situation is concerned."
"Complete/custom machine real-time replication process (including apply and verification of destination)."
"In case we have an emergency or a sudden issue on the production system, we can put our point of sale terminals in local mode for 1 hour, switch over to the backup system, verify that all is running OK, then the POS systems can reconnect, and our users can sign on again and continue working."

Cons

"I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's."
"The solution's reporting could be improved because the report writer is terrible."
"We receive these new functionalities, and sometimes we start to test them and we find errors that we need to correct by talking with tech support."
"They allow functionalities to be released before the full tests for catching and correcting errors are completed."
"Overall, I don't like any of the features and I think that it's a poor system."
"Documentation tends to range from pointless to incomprehensible."
"This version does not properly generate SQL Server computed columns; future versions do this."
"The solution is not so strong at creating modeling views and database views."
"OS version compatibility needs work."
"Replication of the IBM i spooled files and files on the IFS system (Windows-like environment). About 1/2 the time, we have to nudge the system a bit to get the file(s) over."
"The product dashboard that comes with the product could use some work."
"Customer support is good but they do try to squeeze out those service dollars."
"The version we're using is not portal ready."
"Replication errors need to be resolved."
"The MQSeries replication part doesn't work smoothly, sometimes requiring more manual activity to ensure synch between live and backup."
"Monitoring tools can be improved but are very useful already."
