Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Decades of expertise lead to seamless installations and robust security
I typically use the Sophos XG Firewall to enhance my cybersecurity by using all layers. The intrusion prevention system impacts my security posture effectively, as we have not faced any ransomware or cyber threats. I have more than 800 servers live from Sophos. The synchronized security feature has proven to be very beneficial, and I have not encountered any issues. Sophos XG Firewall has contributed to reducing overall costs because it helps save money. We purchased endpoint security for the first time last year, and even without endpoint security, it provides comprehensive security. Sophos XG uses AI effectively to enhance threat detection and response, securing from AI at the packet level.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Fortinet FortiGate serves as the first line of defense, it is robust and easy to configure, and I haven't seen any breaches happening when configured properly based on best practices."
"It's a user-friendly and stable firewall."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are it is one of the most mature firewalls in the UTM bundle."
"Fortinet FortiGate is a very light product. It's easy to understand."
"The product offers very good security."
"FortiGate's web and URL filtering are unlike any other firewall I've used. The functionality of URL filtering in those solutions is problematic because everything is encrypted, and firewalls can't break that encryption protocol. Fortinet has an SSL proxy, so the encryption is done before the packet ever leaves the FortiGate. The URL filter is definitely one of the most helpful features."
"The firewall is pretty good if you understand how to use it. It performs at a very high level, and we are loving it."
"We can use our devices to check all of the perimeters, and it secures email websites."
"I would rate the stability as ten out of ten for IPFire."
"IPFire has prevented any kind of hacking and enables us to comply with customer requirements."
"The most valuable features in Sophos XGS are bandwidth management, content filtering, and WAN link management failover. If one internet activity or one link would fail, automatically it will switch over to another one."
"The most valuable feature, according to the setup we have at our work place here, is the flexibility of the system or the firmware that's running the appliance. It's so flexible, performing multiple rules with different configurations. According to the set up here, we need to implement several firewalls with different access levels, because we have a variety of users. For this requirement, it's very flexible and very easy to use."
"Sophos XGS' most valuable features are protection and intrusion prevention detection."
"The solution is easy to use and configure, once you know how to apply the policies."
"I find DLP, API, IP, SDK, and web control to be valuable features."
"The dashboard is customizable as well. It gives you the feature of including what you need to see as soon as you open the dashboard and to remove the non-necessary stuff, which varies from one organization to the next and from one IT manager to the next. And it has a wide variety of reports as well, template and customizable reports."
"Easy to deploy and user friendly."
"The two most valuable feature of Sophos XG is, one the option to filter according to different applications and two, the integration with the Active Directory."

Cons

"Fortinet doesn't provide multiple virtual firewalls which would facilitate end users and customers."
"Part of the setup was straightforward and other parts were complex. They need to work on feature placements and menus."
"We sometimes have issues when carrying out inspections because the system slows down and our clients complain about it."
"Not all features are available in the web UI. Features such as enabling multiple MPLS circuits can only be accomplished through the command line, so these need to be made available in the web UI."
"The support is the main thing that needs to be improved."
"The stability of Fortinet FortiGate could improve."
"They should provide us with a CSV number for patch updates. It will help us block specific signatures as well."
"The level of customer service is bad because support is very pathetic."
"The graphical interface could be much better."
"Accessing the internet was a bit complicated."
"There have been some issues when upgrading. For some reason, parts of the configuration become unconfigured, I then have to reconfigure it."
"The main problem with Sophos XG today is that it doesn't have a feature where you actually know the quality of an international link, which would allow us to know if the link is operational or not."
"For the moment, managing the Sophos interface is a little bit challenging."
"The main improvement needed is in the pricing. It is a little higher when compared to competitors like Huawei."
"The scalability is limited."
"When you utilize the processors, the device hangs."
"The user interface could be improved and more bandwidth management would be helpful."
"There are a lot of false-positive cases."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet FortiGate's price can be reduced."
"Its licenses cost the same for different subscription plans."
"Fortinet is the least expensive solution."
"The pricing is based on a licensing model for each IPS in your environment."
"On a scale of one being cheap and ten being expensive, I rate the tool's price as an eight."
"Licensing for Fortinet FortiGate is on a yearly basis. Pricing for it is a bit high. It could be cheaper."
"The price of Fortinet FortiGate could improve, it is expensive."
