It is easy to use with access via CLI and GUI. It also has good stability I am not able to answer this question. Features which could be improved include the search functions and the database size. From what I remember it wasn't very easy to search for specific objects or rules. One issue I…

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Retrospectively, I would definitely recommend this product because of its functionalities, its reliability, and the good support."
"Juniper NetsScreen is a pretty straightforward firewall appliance which is certainly a good fit from mid-size organizations to big enterprises."
"It is easy to use with access via CLI and GUI."
"Netgate is constantly releasing patches and updates, which is nice."
"The tools' most valuable feature is load balancing."
"pfSense is very good because it allows us to do what we want."
"pfSense provides visibility that enables users to make data-driven decisions."
"It is very flexible. I have not found a use case that I could not satisfy with the device."
"Some of the terminologies were more familiar to me than it was when I first encountered Cisco."
"It has enhanced our organization because of its versatility, it doesn't need expensive hardware to build a robust firewall, therefore providing a saving on cost, and its reliability is quite remarkable which allows IT to focus on other tasks, and how efficiently it manages our WAN traffic."
"The open-source nature of pfSense, paired with the amount of support we receive, has been great."

Cons

"The initial setup was quite complex."
"Features which could be improved include the search functions and the database size."
"There has been some remote accessibility issues at times with older models."
"The first time we deployed it, it was kind of tricky."
"It requires more attention to provide a better alternative for open source to small government or educational institutions with reduced budgets in terms of technology."
"Perhaps the documentation is not clear and because it is supported in the community there is no basic documentation."
"I am unsure if it's feasible, but I have previously utilized a web VPN interface with Cisco Firewalls that allows VPN connections through a website, eliminating the installation of VPN software."
"The user interface needs improvement. Even though it's a system that's easy to get working upon installation, the configurations are not intuitive."
"Improve analysis of logs and dashboards (control panel) with improved alert functionality."
"I want pfSense to add some next-generation firewall features."
"As an open-source solution, there are so many loopholes happening within the product. By design, no one is taking ownership of it, and that is worrisome to me."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"pfSense is open-source, but the support is something that the customer pays for."
"Their pricing is quite reasonable."
"All costs are low compared to other solutions. The hardware is stable and cheap."
"It is economical (i.e., free)."
"Unless they have specific requirements that demand a particular device, I always suggest pfSense specifically because of the absence of pricing and licensing."
"Compared to other business routers, pfSense's pricing is reasonable."
"PfSense's pricing is reasonable. However, support is relatively expensive for smaller customers, and you need to pay per device to get it. So if Customer A is having an issue, I have to get support, and then I have to get support for Customer B, and so on. It would be nice as a managed services provider to get support for my company rather than individual devices."
"Because the Community edition is free, we only charge for our services to the customers. In Turkey, we cannot demand normal pricing; if we were in Europe or the United States, we might collect more money from customers."
