Data protection improves while users adapt to user access complexities
Recovery options are useful with Microsoft BitLocker. When we get the recovery key from Microsoft, people who we show how BitLocker works did not know the facts about BitLocker. When we tell them about recovery keys, it is very difficult for them to get to the users who have issues in their PCs and do not have the knowledge. When IT asked about the scenario, it was difficult for them. They needed something where they could go to the administration portal to unlock the PC for the user, but we tell them that when a user asks for a recovery key, it consists of 32 numbers to unlock their PC. They observed cost savings after implementing Microsoft BitLocker because they requested BitLocker with System Center. They found that it did not have a high cost, as it is a built-in feature in Windows. When they asked about other solutions, it was very expensive for large numbers in other corporates or organizations. They were very satisfied with Microsoft BitLocker with System Center Configuration Manager.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's my understanding that the initial setup is straightforward."
"It is an encryption tool and provides security."
"The solution is included in Windows 11."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is the protection and ease of use."
"Being able to encrypt an entire hard disk has been most valuable."
"The manageability of it is a valuable feature."
"The solution has a feature that automatically asks the users to upgrade their password once we set up the process."
"The most valuable feature is the authentication process which is very fast."
"The Central Management server."

Cons

"The biggest one for us is revoking access. So, even though someone downloads something to a device, we want the ability to cloak that device or data and bring it back or make that data unusable for that person. Currently, BitLocker doesn't give us that ability. It basically encrypts it. We're seeing if identity management or IAM allows us to do that. We're kind of looking at third-party software that does that for us."
"Microsoft BitLocker is far away from the threats in data security. It is not the number one solution for security, but I think it is a good layer in this process."
"More detailed documentation about usage would be beneficial, as installation instructions are provided but potential issues are not typically addressed."
"Instead of integrating with a third party, Microsoft BitLocker should have its own mechanism to safeguard the systems when they are not accessible for a long time."
"The solution could be improved if it was more user friendly."
"I would recommend BitLocker only because of the economic side, not the technical side. If the features were included in the already existing licenses I would use it. If not, I would recommend other products."
"At the end of it all, we are looking for something that can be easier to manage."
"I would like to see improvement in the solution's central management of passwords. Currently, we install it separately."
"MacOS X is missing features."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I don't know the costs. In terms of Microsoft licensing, we are at E3 on the business, and we're in the process of pricing out and moving to E5. So, a lot of this is included within our licensing agreements."
"Microsoft BitLocker's pricing is included in the Microsoft license, and you don't have to pay an additional fee for it."
"The price of this solution should be more competitive."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is expensive and ten is cheap, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
"BitLocker is already in Windows 10 and its price has already been "paid"."
"I think it's reasonably priced because I've never heard any complaints from my company about its costs."
"This solution is included with Microsoft Server and my clients did not have to pay for anything extra."
"It is free. It is enabled as part of the operating system. Once you have an operating system license, you're licensed for Bitlocker."
"Licensing and pricing is on par with the market."
