Reliable replication has transformed disaster recovery and supports realistic dev-test environments
The best feature NetApp SnapMirror offers is block-level incremental replication, which is the foundation of everything. After the initial baseline transfer, only the changed blocks move across the wire, not entire files or volumes. In a busy storage environment, that is the difference between replication that fits in your backup window and replication that hammers your network all day. NetApp SnapMirror has positively impacted our organization by taking us from a theoretical DR capability, meaning we had a secondary site but had never fully tested a failover, to a validated, tested, documented DR process that we run quarterly, which is a fundamental change in our risk posture. Management can now say with confidence that if the primary site goes down, we recover within two hours with zero data loss on critical systems.

Snapshots have enabled us to restore critical data quickly and confidently after unexpected changes
The functions or features I have found most valuable in NetApp Snapshot are that it is easy to do and takes very little time. The main benefits that NetApp Snapshot provides for me are that if anything goes wrong, we can go back and restore something. It gives you peace of mind, which saves money, effort, and everything else. I use NetApp's WAFL architecture as it is their way of doing things, how to save the files and everything else. It is built-in. You cannot avoid WAFL when you use NetApp. Regarding the integration of NetApp Snapshot with applications and workloads, we have NetApp Snapshot integrated with our OpenStack platform.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The synchronous and real-time replication are the most vital features of NetApp SnapMirror"
"The user interface is very easy to manage. The replication is also very easy to set up."
"The technical support is quite good."
"What I like most about this solution is its simplicity."
"They have a very effective dashboard and good reports."
"This solution provides safety and data protection for my customers."
"The solution is very stable."
"With SnapMirror, the solution is the feature itself that is most valuable. It just replicates the data. It's very difficult to speak about, in the sense that it's similar to the features of a wheel. It is round and it's a part of an automobile."
"One of the best features in the industry is that data snapshots can be synchronise for database consistency."
"The most valuable feature of NetApp Snapshot is its ability to complete a sixty-terabyte database snapshot in less than three minutes."
"It doesn't occupy a lot of space and is very easy to use once you schedule the snapshots."
"It centralizes your data."
"I recommend the solution because it protect with no impact and recover easily."
"What I find most valuable, is the simplicity of the technology."
"We see that deduplication and compression give us a lot of space, so space efficiency impacts our data management strategy."
"It is a very scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."

Cons

"The NetApp storage is entry-level storage. I'd like to see compression and deduplication and encryption improved, and I'd like to have real-time replication so I have a zero RPO."
"The new coursework models need to be improved. The bandwidth monitoring could also be better."
"Synchronous replication with read-write on both sides in both data centers is powerful but risky since it is greatly affected by high network latency."
"We have to do manual verifications about the subscriptions often."
"At the moment, we are not using the synchronous mirror, but we can implement the synchronous mirror. The only thing is that it needs another license. This is the same issue we have with business continuity. It needs another license to be implemented. You need too many separate licenses for the features. They should add some of the aspects of the premium bundle into the basic bundle. Sometimes our customers choose other replication services because of the initial cost of the licenses."
"Multiple tasks in the solution are made by the command line and the GUI can be improved to perform complex tasks."
"We have different families of storage, such as the E-Series and Flash systems, but NetApp cannot be set up between them."
"The tool should also work on third-party solutions."
"One area for improvement is enhancing the compression capabilities further to minimize storage requirements, especially given its costs with Oracle integration."
"Although support is good, the global support is lacking depending on location."
"Specialized applications like SnapManager for Exchange (SME) are finicky."
"NetApp Snapshot usually takes a lot of space on the volume, requiring manual removal. It should be more automated."
"The dashboards are in need of improvement."
"The initial setup process of NetApp Snapshot is not easy and needs improvement."
"In my opinion, what NetApp can do to make NetApp Snapshot better is lower the cost."
"The solution needs to ensure it has higher availability or business continuity."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing can be improved."
"It's part of the NetApp Firewall, so it's free."
"The cost is low compared to different vendors."
"SnapMirror is extremely expensive. We had a hard time adjusting to our budget. If rated on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the most expensive, I would definitely rate it ten out of ten."
"The solution has monthly and yearly licensing options."
"It's a highly cost-effective solution"
"The pricing could be improved."
"The product price is reasonable."
"The price of the solution is reasonable but could improve. However, if you are in a country that has a poor currency then the price will be considered expensive."
"If there is a way to save more on the number of snapshots, it should be included in the next release."
"It's not too expensive."
"The price of this solution is fair."
"As far as their licensing costs, the licensing is paid on a yearly basis. The organization pays for the licensing based on the software and the capacity that they choose."
"Snapshot is free and comes with the NetApp storage software. It's purely free of cost."
"The price of NetApp Snapshot depends on the use case. They charge by how much data you need, the capability, and for snap licenses."
"NetApp Snapshot is expensive since you need to buy an additional premium license for it which is an extra cost over the payments made for NetApp...The license works during the entire life cycle of NetApp Snapshot."
