Great performance all round, but lacking in certain cloud features
Speaking from a business perspective, our main problem is that our particular edition of SuperCluster is now at end-of-life status, making it obsolete and impossible to get support for. This presents a challenge for us, as finding a path to our next solution is not easy. When it comes to features, I know that Oracle has already done a lot on the software side of things, but everyone has their own wish list for their specific environment and in newer editions of SuperCluster I would like to see new EXAchk data in the cloud environment. In fact, I would prefer if SuperCluster could come with more functionality as seen in Oracle Cloud where it is easier to share data and other things across the board. SuperCluster is already a smart machine, so I understand that it might be difficult to implement all those features, but at a minimum I would appreciate Oracle including more cloud infrastructure functionality. Oracle's existing cloud machines are already able to provide all these cloud features that I would like, including the use of containers and hardware-sharing, and it would be great to have these on board for their customers and end-users of SuperCluster.

For improvement, I feel the documentation available for setting up and creating infrastructure using Rackspace OpenStack could be enhanced, as I personally find the existing documents are not sufficient for new learners or beginners. We can also work on improving the user interface; the Horizon dashboard is functional, but compared to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, the UI feels somewhat dated. A more modern, intuitive interface with better navigation would enhance the overall user experience, especially for new users. Improving the documentation, including more real-world deployment examples, troubleshooting guides, and architecture best practices, would make onboarding much easier. Faster upgrades would also help; Rackspace OpenStack upgrades can sometimes be complex, so simplifying the upgrade process and minimizing downtime would assist organizations in maintaining their environments more easily. Additionally, improving monitoring capabilities would be beneficial, with advanced monitoring and analytics dashboards providing administrators deeper visibility into performance, capacity, and potential issues without relying heavily on third-party tools. Adding more managed services, similar to what public cloud providers offer, could reduce operational overhead while still allowing customers to retain the flexibility of a private cloud. Lastly, integrating AI could be valuable, with AI-driven recommendations for capacity planning, security monitoring, and automated troubleshooting improving platform management.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"A valuable feature is the Exadata Storage appliance, optimized for database queries."
"The promise of consolidation is still a strong selling point, especially if the prospective client has applications that run on SPARC and has its data store in an Oracle Database."
"SuperCluster is basically a combination of Oracle, with Exadata and Compute node features, so it is a computing cluster that is integrated in a single infrastructure such that we don't need a separate solution for the application database, the data storage database, and everything else the application needs."
"Upon migrating to OSC M7, the customer achieved significant performance, reduced cost for licensing and used the Exadata and SuperCluster features."
"Unix is not as easy for the users, it needs more maintenance and costs extra."
"When you look at SuperCluster's complete infrastructure as a whole and the fact that we can run the database and application all on the same infrastructure, I feel that SuperCluster is a better solution than most."
"The scalability and the technical support that you get from Oracle are very valuable to us."
"Scalability and technical support."
"Rackspace OpenStack has positively impacted my organization by bringing us much closer to our customers based on the supportability this platform provides, and it has unique features which are very useful for our customers."
"Rackspace OpenStack is stable and reliable, often compared favorably against other solutions."
"Administrators are very comfortable with the functionality and services OpenStack offers."
"The most valuable feature is the customization, and with the customization you can really give the customers what they want."
"In my experience, Rackspace OpenStack delivered a stable, flexible, and reliable private cloud environment."
"Rackspace OpenStack impacted my organization positively in that the drive helped me keep files in an organized folder, and obviously we needed email addresses to be able to communicate with each other and for outsiders to be able to email us."
"I like its integration with GitLab and its simplicity. OpenStack has a lot of third-party libraries that it uses."
"Customer Service: Top. Technical Support: Top"

Cons

"A major issue for us is that after the most recent update of SuperCluster, they have now stopped all future production of new versions. That is to say, after M7 there was M8, and now there are no future versions planned (e.g. M9) in the market."
"It's not working as we expected. We thought it would be fast and reliable but we are not getting the reliability. It's not stable."
"I would like to see control domain and zone management via a management console, similar to that of OVM."
"Speaking from a business perspective, our main problem is that our particular edition of SuperCluster is now at end-of-life status, making it obsolete and impossible to get support for. This presents a challenge for us, as finding a path to our next solution is not easy."
"We have faced network connectivity issues."
"Oracle SuperCluster M7 is bit expensive."
"We are not able to upgrade our SuperClass to the latest version, because this solution is more compatible with Oracle."
"If it had capabilities to integrate really well with DB2 or SQL Server or Hitachi SANs, those sort of things, that would be a real benefit. Right now, it's fully supported only under all Oracle infrastructure."
"It should have a single dashboard for cloud management and on-premises systems"
"OpenStack is difficult for the novice in terms of beginning to use cloud tools."
"In terms of what needs to be improved, I would say the support. Rackspace might have some good support but the open source OpenStack doesn't have support because there are too many versions coming and too many people are customizing it."
"The seamless integration between MySQL services and the rabbitMQ database can be revised during the debugging phase."
"The deployment process could be easy."
"The line migration is a problem."
"I cannot comment comprehensively on how Rackspace OpenStack can be improved, as I do not find that much difference; however, some areas can be improved, such as support for OEMs deploying highly specialized real-time telecom and media workloads."
"So for the main stability, there have been a couple of issues that I've experienced."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Due to the multiple products involved in our use of SuperCluster (including different software, hardware, etc.), I cannot comment on the licensing aspect."
"For us, the licensing costs are a large amount, but we are also paying for the rack, the SLA, and other extras. When I look into our organization's requirements regarding performance, machine load, etc., I believe that, while expensive, SuperCluster is nevertheless good for us."
"The pricing is low."
"I use it as an open-source tool."
