Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

A highly scalable and stable solution that provides excellent features and can be integrated with any product
The support team is more into R&D. They're not focused on support. The vendor lets the partners provide support for the solution. Partners must have StableNet-certified engineers. Complex problems arise for complex installations. When a problem is deep, it takes a lot of time to resolve it. It goes to the R&D and development teams. They do solve it, but the time taken could be reduced.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most important feature is reporting. The reports that are generated are useful and they save a lot of time with respect to monitoring."
"Our ability to locate the source of a network issue has dramatically reduced our mean-time-to-resolve."
"The monitoring system of Orion is powerful and has become a positive feature in the company."
"The solution is stable and reliable."
"The ability to customize the views and dashboards is nice, and SolarWinds also allows us to access the data via the API, which is probably the feature I liked the most."
"This solution provides one standardized platform for network device monitoring."
"As far as assisting in being proactive in our network, it's been a great help in helping us maintain a healthy environment and being proactive and making sure things are up to date and upgraded."
"We are frequently able to attend to issues before our user community and customers are aware that a problem exists."
"We can integrate any tool with StableNet."
"The solution is stable."
"The best features are the reporting, utilization, and network graph."

Cons

"We encountered an inability to display graphical views of some customized reports."
"New, web-based interface lacks some features of traditional GUI."
"There are issues with newer features so it can take a long time to adjust. The solution is in bad shape because of software hacks."
"I faced a problem with GRE over IPSec tunnel traffic, it was not showing Netflow enabled traffic and without IPSec tunnel traffic Netflow was working fine."
"I have not had a good experience with technical support because most of the time when I contact them, they first want to know whether you have a license."
"SolarWinds NPM is a stable solution, aside from the fact that they had a major hack a couple of years ago and effectively allowed the Russian government to completely hack their code, making everyone vulnerable."
"User Interface needs improvement as it is not very attractive."
"The solution's customer service is not very good because the support takes too long."
"The dashboard has a lot of room for improvement."
"The existing dashboard capability is there, but it is not user-friendly."
"The solution is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"SolarWinds NPM has different pricing models available. The cost of the solution is less than some competitors."
"I believe the original setup cost was around $3500 with an annual cost of around $1200-$1500 to renew the support license. This would bring the average day-to-day cost of around $5-$6 over three years."
"We pay approximately $700 per year for renewal of the license."
"The price is more expensive than some other products, such as ManageEngine."
"We pay a yearly licensing fee."
"The licensing model is such that you can purchase only what you need; and then grow into the next level by paying only the difference in price and the associated maintenance costs."
"I think that the cost has risen, but the functionality and versatility is way above other products."
"The cost is based on the number of nodes, so it is expensive when you have a lot of them."
