Good throughout, compatibility, price, and stability
Pros and Cons
- "Its throughout and compatibility are the most valuable."
- "There should be more port options in this switch. Currently, it has 24 or 48 ports. However, some of our customers require only 8 ports, but I have to put a switch with 24 ports. They should provide smaller solutions and complimentary access point for companies like ours with a low quantity of work. The main issue with this product is branding. They should improve their branding and promote their brand more in Mexico. Customers are more aware of brands like Cisco as compared to Dell."

IT Manager at a real estate/law firm with 1-10 employees
Very solid and reliable at a reasonable cost
Pros and Cons
- "This is a very reliable solution."
- "The most valuable feature of this product is its reliability."
- "I think accessibility and management could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We are a small operation and don't have a so-called data center. Our requirements are not complex and we really just need a firewall for downloading material. We use 48 port units. The switches have that capability and give us enough flexibility for when the time comes to really start segregating things. The product is used extensively but it doesn't require much maintenance. I'm an IT manager and we're Dell customers.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this product is its reliability. Dell products are generally quite reliable in terms of all the servers and the desktop.
What needs improvement?
I think accessibility and management could be improved. It would be helpful if it could be configured on a tablet or mobile.
It would be great if at some point they came up with some web-based GUI app that allows you to easily manage and configure your switches.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this product for six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Over the many years we've been using this solution, we've had maybe one of two issues, usually related to crashes in our network rather than problems with the solution. There haven't been any connectivity issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is not an issue in this product.
How was the initial setup?
I don't think the initial setup is complex, we managed to do it ourselves without any problem. As long as all your cabling is properly numbered and you know where they lead on your patch panel, then you're okay.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are no additional costs other than purchasing the solution which is quite reasonably priced.
What other advice do I have?
In terms of costs and reliability, they are okay. It might not be able to do more complex things so anyone looking to use the solution would need to figure out their requirements.
I would rate this solution a nine out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
IT Project Manager at NTSAFRICA Services
Easy to use with a web-based GUI, highly resilient, and has good technical support
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of this solution is simplicity."
- "Dell seems to accommodate everyone when it comes to managing these switches."
- "When it comes to the configuration, there should be documentation and interactive help available to assist people who have experience with products from other vendors."
What is our primary use case?
We are a solution provider and Dell PowerConnect Switches are one of the products that we implement for our customers. Many of the models are used to manage East-West traffic in the network. The are other models that handle traffic at the application layer.
In data centers, we generally deploy the S Series.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this solution is simplicity. They try to make everything as simple as possible. Even if you are coming into networking for the first time, it is very easy.
The GUI, web interface is very nice if you are unfamiliar with the CLI.
What needs improvement?
When it comes to the configuration, there should be documentation and interactive help available to assist people who have experience with products from other vendors. For example, if I type in a Cisco keyword then it should highlight the differences and display what steps or similar commands are required.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Dell PowerConnect Switches for more than seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
These switches are reliable and we have not had problems with them. Since 2013, none of the sites that I have implemented have gone down due to issues with instability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Dell PowerConnect Switches are very easy to scale and it can be done on the fly. It is essentially plug-and-plug, once you have the configuration replicated.
We have customers that vary in size from SME to enterprises. There are different models available depending on the size of the organization.
How are customer service and technical support?
We handle the first level of support for our customers. However, if it is something that is beyond our capacity then we contact Dell. The support from Dell is fantastic. It is available 24 hours a day and in all regions.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have dealt with switches from other manufacturers such as Cisco, and the Dell PowerConnect switches are easier to work with and scale. Physically, there are not so different, but the proprietary commands differentiate them. The cost of Dell is also cheaper than that of Cisco.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward and easy to do. If I understand the requirements and what has to go into the configuration then it will take me a maximum of 15 minutes to deploy. This is for a single switch. In a large environment, there can be many switches. If we are deploying 50 switches, for example, then we might have three engineers to do the job.
Depending on the customer's environment, it is sometimes deployed on-premises but as part of a private cloud.
What about the implementation team?
We deploy these switches and other services for our customers. Our team will design the system, deploy it, and then offer support. Normally, the deployment is seamless because we plan everything in advance and know what is expected.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This solution is much cheaper than comparable products by Cisco.
What other advice do I have?
Dell seems to accommodate everyone when it comes to managing these switches. The ease of use is an important selling point that has allowed them to push into the market.
My advice for anybody who is considering these switches is that they are a good product and I recommend them. There is some training available to help understand the architecture, which you should take. If you are coming from a Cisco background then you will find it very easy to integrate.
One of the things that I have learned about using this product is that there is steady development going on at all times. There are other products and technologies that are fading away, whereas this product is improving.
Another thing that I have learned about working with Dell is that they will never sell you something that is not redundant. Rather, their solutions are highly available. They don't want to have anything with a single point of failure. Essentially, the level of resiliency and redundancy is very high.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Has good correlation but requires a lot of testing
Pros and Cons
- "The security is the most valuable aspect of this solution. It also has good storage and resource handling."
- "I would rate it a seven out of ten. Not a ten because I have to do a lot of testing on it."
What is most valuable?
The security is the most valuable aspect of this solution. It also has good storage and resource handling.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We don't have bugs or glitches. It's stable.
We have a team in our own company to maintain this solution.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We don't have any experience with other switches. We're thinking that in six months we'll look at more switches.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate it a seven out of ten.
Not a ten because I have to do a lot of testing on it. The correlation is okay.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Network Infrastructure Administrator at PCC Intermodal
Easy to set up and configure with excellent pricing
Pros and Cons
- "The functionality is very good."
- "It's much less expensive than Cisco, and yet it has the same functionalities."
- "We've only been using the solution for half a year. We haven't run into any issues, but maybe over time, that may change. It's too soon to tell. Offhand, there aren't any features that are lacking."
What is most valuable?
We can configure it on our own and it works well. We don't need to do many changes on the device.
Its configuration is similar to Cisco switches. We don't have any unexpected problems with this solution.
The pricing is quite good.
The functionality is very good.
What needs improvement?
We've only been using the solution for half a year. We haven't run into any issues, but maybe over time, that may change. It's too soon to tell. Offhand, there aren't any features that are lacking.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using the solution for half a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable. Once we set them up we don't need to worry about them anymore.
How are customer service and technical support?
We've reached out to technical support, and we've had a good experience. Dell offers very good support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use Cisco switches. They are very similar to this solution. Cisco and Dell have the same functionality. For Dell, however, it's two devices in one cluster. Still, it's very similar. I don't see any big difference between Cisco and Dell.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward. It has an easy configuration. Once it's set up, you can basically walk away and forget it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Dell costs less than Cisco. Cisco, in comparison, is about four times more expensive.
What other advice do I have?
We're just customers. We aren't partners with Dell.
The solution is fairly easy to use. We configured it and plugged it in, and now it works without a problem. We haven't had any issues with this platform after a year and a half of use.
We don't have any use cases with these devices currently. We do have corporate support from Dell because we bought switches and servers. I don't administrate servers, I only administrate on network infrastructure.
The implementation we've done so far has been quite small. However, Dell is very good for big companies.
I'd recommend people buy the solution. It's much less expensive than Cisco, and yet it has the same functionalities.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Great switches for LAN access that have been combined for data, high-performance access-points, IT surveillance, and cameras
Pros and Cons
- "When the price is competitive the customers tend to choose the cheaper brand and then look at the features. So having a competitive price is a plus."
- "The Dell EMC Networking N1500 Switches are a great solution and are great switches for access switch on LAN which they have combined for data, high-performance access-point, IT surveillance, and cameras."
- "I would like to see better scalability and more features on these switches in the future."
- "Scalability can be a problem with these switches."
What is our primary use case?
We use the Dell EMC Networking N1500 series switches. We use them primarily for access to the Local Area Network.
What is most valuable?
We have used these switches for data access the LAN. We have also used the switches for power over ethernet devices in the LAN. Also, we have attached cameras for IT surveillance.
We have found that in our market the price is very good for our customers. When the price is competitive, the customers tend to choose the cheaper brand and then look at the features. So having a competitive price is a plus.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see better scalability and more features on these switches in the future.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Dell PowerConnect Switches for a year and a half.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
These switches are stable and customers have been very happy. All the clients we have completed the switches for are happy and they don't have any issues with them.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability can be a problem with these switches.
How was the initial setup?
I have not been involved in the setup of these switches. I'm in sales so I am just learning of the features.
What other advice do I have?
The Dell EMC Networking N1500 Switches are a great solution. They are great switches for access switch on LAN which they have combined for data, high-performance access-point, IT surveillance, and cameras. I would rate these switches a ten on a scale of ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Easy to configure and integrates well with Cisco hardware, but incompatible with SDN
Pros and Cons
- "Dell PowerConnect Switches are easy to configure and fully integrate into our Cisco switches without any problem."
- "It would be great to have modules that integrate with SDN solutions such as Cisco ACI, Arista SDN, Huawei Agile, and IBM."
- "However, we are now having a problem where it does not integrate well with SDN."
What is our primary use case?
Dell PowerConnect Switches make up part of our network and they are connected to our Dell servers.
What is most valuable?
Dell PowerConnect Switches are easy to configure.
These switches fully integrate into our Cisco switches without any problem.
What needs improvement?
It would be helpful if there were an option to use the device as either a switch or a pass-through for the traffic from inside to outside. This would mean that we would not have to replace hardware in some cases. I think that the IBM switches have this feature.
It would be great to have modules that integrate with SDN solutions such as Cisco ACI, Arista SDN, Huawei Agile, and IBM.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerConnect Switches since 2012.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have never had a problem with any of our Dell switches. I would say that these switches are stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Two modules can be stacked on a single chassis. We have approximately 60 chassis with two modules each, so 120 Dell PowerConnect switches. These are connected to Cisco switches at one end of the network.
How are customer service and technical support?
My team has not had much contact with Dell technical support because the Dell switches belong to another team. We are only responsible for installing and configuring them.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also have Cisco switches in our environment. It is probably 80% Cisco and 20% Dell.
I also have experience with Huawei, HP, and Juniper switches. Huawei switches used to use a similar set of commands, but they are different now. HP uses almost the same command set. Juniper switches are more difficult to work with.
In our data center, we have also used Arista switches.
How was the initial setup?
I have not found any problems with the installation or configuration of Dell switches. I used a basic configuration so it is simple. It takes perhaps half an hour to deploy.
What about the implementation team?
We have a team but I deployed this solution myself. There is a guide available to assist with the installation and configuration. The commands are similar to Cisco, which makes it easy to use.
What other advice do I have?
We have decreased our use of Dell PowerConnect Switches in the past year because we are moving to virtualization and using SDN switches. The problem comes about because it is difficult to see the server end-point directly on the SDN. For our Dell servers, we are replacing the switches with pass-through modules because the spanning tree loops are the same.
My advice for anybody who is considering this solution is to consider issues that might occur when using devices from multiple vendors. We found this difficult because of the integration. We like Dell because it is easy to use and it integrates well with Cisco. However, we are now having a problem where it does not integrate well with SDN. If the environment requires connectivity to SDN then these switches may not be suitable.
Rating this solution as a switch, I would say that it is eight and a half out of ten. However, with respect to integration with new technologies, it is not mature enough and I would rate it a five out of ten.
Overall, I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

System Administrator at a media company with 51-200 employees
Flexible, efficient technology for streaming and has a simple interface
Pros and Cons
- "The technology is good and the interface is simple. We haven't had any bugs, disconnections or delays."
- "We evaluated numerous options before choosing Dell including Fortinet, HP and Cisco, but really it was this solution that worked given our budget and for installation, it was a good solution in terms of technical support, scalability, availability and a lot of things, and it satisfied our requirements."
- "Because of the stackings, you lose some boards and the two switches."
What is our primary use case?
We are customers of Dell and I'm a systems administrator. Our primary use case for the product is connecting the main core, the data center, with core switches. We have six floors in the building and on each floor we have two switches we connected using stack technology with a fiber network in between.
What is most valuable?
There are many valuable features - the cost was the best we found with comparable products. The technology is good and the interface is simple. We haven't had any bugs, disconnections or delays. It's good because we use it for streaming videos and things like that. There were no issues during implementation and we haven't had any issues in the time we've been using the product.
What needs improvement?
A possible way the product could be improved would be to allow integration between other brands like HP or Cisco. It would be great if you could use the interface with more than one brand. Compatibility would be a good feature but it's unlikely to happen.
Stacking and fiber cords would be good additional features in the next release. Because of the stackings, you lose some boards and the two switches. If they made a core cable that would be better.
For how long have I used the solution?
This is a new product for us and we've been using it for the last four, five months only. We're using the latest version.
How are customer service and technical support?
We haven't needed to contact technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In the previous project I used Sophos but it's for a different purpose with junior board switches. Now we're dealing with a security project so it's a different kind of project with different requirements.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was very straightforward and easy. It's a good feature in Dell switches.
Deployment throughout the building, including core switches, data switches, connecting the wires and fiber cable took about 10 days. We had two people assisting us from the vendor company and three people from our company. Initial deployment is the responsibility of the vendor.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated numerous options before choosing Dell including Fortinet, HP and Cisco. But really it was this solution that worked given our budget and for installation, it was a good solution in terms of technical support, scalability, availability and a lot of things. It satisfied our requirements.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this product an eight out of 10.

Has a lifetime warranty but stability is an issue and technical support needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "This solution comes with a lifetime warranty."
- "More stable firmware releases would be an improvement because we have had them randomly power on and off."
- "I do not like this solution. It runs ok but we have had problems."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution for our local infrastructure and environment.
What is most valuable?
This solution comes with a lifetime warranty.
What needs improvement?
We have had some problems with the firmware. More stable firmware releases would be an improvement because we have had them randomly power on and off. These switches should be better tested before a firmware update is released.
Technical support for this solution should be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for between three and four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have encountered two or three bugs that affected the stability of this solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
These switches are scalable but I do not know to what extent.
We have eighty users who are mostly developers and our business centers.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support for this solution is ok, but I have seen better. They are not the best.
At times they have responded quickly, but not always.
What other advice do I have?
I do not like this solution. It runs ok but we have had problems.
This is a solution that I would recommend only for those without complex setup or networking.
I would rate this solution a five out of ten.
