Migration between data centers has strengthened core connectivity and simplified segmentation
The biggest problems during migration were corporate issues, including dependencies on other devices such as F5, HSMs, and firewalls from Palo Alto. Everything was connected over the core switches, which made this a quite difficult part to manage and to onboard the teams and to understand the impact of the migration. We encountered an issue where we have two data centers, and unknowingly we were configuring the devices with the same VPC number on both devices. By doing that, we were not able to terminate the lease lines over those core switches. According to Cisco, we had to change the VPC number of one of the data center's core switches since they are in a VPC. We are still waiting, and it has been more than five to six years just to change the VPC number and migrate back the lease line. Now we are having cabin switches for the lease line and then the core switch. That VPC number issue was quite surprising for us. However, we have a very frequent issue with Cisco Nexus, particularly with the SFPs. Every time a port or the SFP heats up, it gets faulty. We have almost sixteen Nexus switches per data center. In a year, we experience one or two port issues per annum. We have standard Equinix data centers with standard installations, but somehow the temperature is always maintained and there is no ducting, yet the ports and the SFPs heat up or become faulty. This is a very frequent issue with the SFP-based port.

Reliable and useful for network segmentation
The solution's most valuable feature stands up well. The tool is reliable, and it stands up well. The solution works fine and lasts a long time. I think if you speak about the features that have a flow and you can measure, it is hard to say. I don't spend a lot of my time with the tool, but I know that Dell APEX is the solution's cloud. I would say the VLAN features are important. The VLAN features are really useful because network segmentation is important. I would say the tool is easy to program. I don't know if the tool has any security features that I am aware of other than the fact that the solution is for networking. The VLAN and the ability to segment your networks are easy, which is its security feature.

Pros

"This is a very stable solution, and its stability means that we do not have any issues."
"Its easy management is most valuable. It is easy to use, easy to manage, stable, and very reliable."
"The solution has demonstrated stability thus far."
"The most valuable feature is the Bluetooth console."
"Cisco Nexus and Cisco Catalyst have processing power and offer good utilization of Cisco devices."
"The solution has improved operations by helping us resolve bottlenecks throughout our infrastructure, as these new products have a much higher throughput that cleans traffic up and makes processes a lot smoother."
"In all the benchmarks and testing that I did, I found the best solution to be Cisco."
"The interface is as user-friendly as you can make it."
"This is a very good product, and it can be used lightly, but you have to understand how it works before implementing it."
"The security is the most valuable aspect of this solution. It also has good storage and resource handling."
"For me, excellent, never had any issue."
"The support is just so good that there is no reason to re-evaluate because of the impact on the trust structure of operations."
"Its throughout and compatibility are the most valuable."
"The solution’s technical support is good."
"It has excellent technical support, is very scalable, stable, reliable, and the product is very affordable."
"If you need some advanced features and reliable core networking components at an affordable price, these switches are for you."

Cons

"Multi contexts would be nice to have to separate different tenants logically and securely."
"For a very small subset, Cisco Nexus caused port flapping within the applications, which was weird."
"Enhancing the software-defined level of this solution would empower it."
"There is always room for improvement."
"The only real feature that we are hoping would evolve at some point is multi-contexts to get into multi-tenancy type environments."
"Ease-of-use and making things more human-readable is most important."
"Some of the DHCP features need improvement."
"The licensing is the area that we are working that's a challenge."
"There should be more port options in this switch. Currently, it has 24 or 48 ports. However, some of our customers require only 8 ports, but I have to put a switch with 24 ports. They should provide smaller solutions and complimentary access point for companies like ours with a low quantity of work. The main issue with this product is branding. They should improve their branding and promote their brand more in Mexico. Customers are more aware of brands like Cisco as compared to Dell."
"I think accessibility and management could be improved."
"I would rate it a seven out of ten. Not a ten because I have to do a lot of testing on it."
"Technical support tends to give conflicting advice on how to configure the product."
"The configuration should be improved."
"Their hardware is not reliable, it's faulty."
"Dell is sometimes slow to provide updates to firmware."
"If I were to rate the support for Dell PowerConnect Switches, I'd give a rating of two out of five."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Every Cisco product is more expensive than competitors on the market, which is just a fact, but from my perspective, it is worth it."
"It's around $160K a year for our license."
"Our licensing costs for this solution are approximately $100K a year for the switching part."
"In most cases, there is a need to secure perpetual licenses to be able to use the product. When I set up the product, there isn't just a one-time cost that is involved."
"We consider Juniper switches to be more affordable."
"The license on a yearly basis is $200,000."
"Cisco Nexus is not cheap compared to Fortinet, Palo Alto, and Check Point."
"Our licensing fees are paid annually."
"On a scale of one to ten, if one means it is a cheap solution, and ten means it is a very expensive tool, I rate the product's price as seven. The tool is a bit pricey."
"Dell PowerConnect switches are cheaper than Cisco switches. Cisco's higher capacity switches (100 or 200 gigs) are super-expensive. With the higher capacity, the price of the switches and the price of the architecture go high. Dell is cheaper and modular. So, I don't need to invest 100% upfront. I can invest as I progress. That is an option because the chassis will not be populated with all the pluggables. I have a choice because it is modular. I can go for 25 gigs today, and after four months, I can go for 100 gigs, and after that, I can go for 200 gigs. I have a choice when it is not a fixed switch."
"If you want to purchase a new Dell PowerConnect Switch, you will pay up to $1,600, but I bought them used. I bought the four Dell PowerConnect Switches that I used for $1,000."
"PowerConnect Switches are priced well."
"Its price is okay. Sometimes, it is lower than a Cisco solution."
"Cheaper than its competitors"
"Pricing for Dell PowerConnect Switches is quite competitive compared to Cisco and HP pricing. Dell has cheaper pricing and the company is trying to push for sales for its switching infrastructure because right now, the current market is dominated by Cisco. In the US market, there's Cisco, HP, Juniper, and Arista which you can buy for data center switching meant for different kinds of enterprises and ISPs. Dell PowerConnect Switches, on the other hand, is a product for people who need smaller setups or individual switches, especially those looking for a cheaper product and basic switching, though you can also buy a complete suite packaged with the switches."
