It has the capability to integrate other data cleansing suites such as Trillium, which need to be configured in landing to staging mappings or we can use Platform staging.

Many dark data silos were identified and many hidden assets were uncovered

What is our primary use case?

We used Informatica Enterprise Information Catalog to find hidden data assets in our organization. We have data spread across disparate systems like Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata, Redshift, mainframes, etc. Informatica EIC has connectivity to a surprising number of systems and we use this to our advantage creating connections to most of our data sources. We used a 40 node hortonworks cluster and ran the scanners to crawl through our data swamp. It has ran for three days now and we have a fair understanding of our data sources.

What is most valuable?

  • Lineage
  • Provenance
  • Flow of data through various sources
  • Data domain discovery to find out sensitive data.

One thing we find very useful is a feature which lets us know who are the stakeholders of a particular data source, and if you are making any changes to a source, then which users must be informed prior.

How has it helped my organization?

Many dark data silos were identified and many hidden assets were uncovered. It helped IT in initial data integration efforts. We were creating data lake-based on MapR Converged Data Platform EIC, which helped us in initial prep.

What needs improvement?

Speed. The solution is bit slow.

For how long have I used the solution?

Six to seven months as of October 2017.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Yes. Installation of the product is bit challenging. It is not straightforward and requires many configurations.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

A few bugs here and there.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support and Informatica Professional Services are friendly and helpful. They helped us iron out the installation issues and provided training for our team on how to use the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Metadata Manager from Informatica, Ab Initio, and Ataccama Data Quality Analyzer. It was a custom made solution based on integration of the above mentioned products. It was difficult to maintain, scale, and required cross team collaboration, which kind of slowed done our pace of operations. Our team does not specialize in Software and IT functionality. EIC provided a one stop solution instead of a lego bricks like solution.

How was the initial setup?

It was kind of complex. It required many prerequisites and required a team of professionals well-versed in Linux and big data technologies.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it in collaboration between our in-house IT folks and Informatica Professional Services. Informatica sent a team of subject matter experts, who had considerable amount of understanding about the project and the big data ecosystem.

What was our ROI?

We are yet to recover the full cost of the product, but it seems good thus far.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is simple, but cost is bit steep.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No. We are not aware of any other product that solves this problem.

What other advice do I have?

The product requires more polishing and hardening. It might take few more releases until the full power and capabilities of this product are unleashed.

Valuable features include data quality improvement, analytics, and reporting.

What is most valuable?

Valuable features include:

  • 360 degree view of customer data
  • Data quality improvement through better decision making with respect to BI
  • Analytics and reporting
  • Improvement in he customer experience with better services provided to the application users
  • Consistent support to the business through process standardization supported by effective Change Management and Data Governance

How has it helped my organization?

We had implemented it across leading Life Science domain. Clients looked to implement a MDM solution for Customer data, which will create a Golden Record from multiple source systems.

Single and consistent view of Customer Data arising from a centralized data set with unique customer records.

Customer data is a critical asset that must be managed within the enterprise.

An integrated Master Data Management solution is needed to enable a 360-degree view of its Customers and provide accurate and timely Customer information.

The ability to link customer information across HCPs (Healthcare Providers), managed markets, hospitals and institutional accounts enables an enhanced view of the customer.

What needs improvement?

I am looking forward to integration with leading data providers, such as DaaS in the Life Science domain.

For how long have I used the solution?

I'm using Informatica MDM since 2012 in various version XUSP2,9.1,9.5.1,10.1 and 10.2

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were a few stability issues, but overall it is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

When it comes to scalability, it is the best product in the market.

How are customer service and technical support?

I would give technical support a rating of 9/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I looked into other products in this segment, but we never implemented them.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was pretty simple.

What other advice do I have?

I would suggest to just go for it. It is the best MDM solution in the market.

Hi Man,

10/10 !!! Thank you for making your blogs an embodiment of perfection and simplicity. You make everything so easy to follow.

Q1, Update Strategy vs. Treat Source Rows As: wrong. The UPD just tells the pmdtm process whether the current record shall be inserted into the target, updated (according to the update details!), deleted from the target, or rejected. Data Driven just means that the flag set by the UPD shall be observed, instead of handling all records the same way.
When the UPD flags a record as DD_UPDATE, then the choice between Update Else Insert , Insert Else Update, or Update As Update will be followed.
In all other cases this choice does not apply.

OK, one additional BUT: if you flag a record for DD_INSERT but you don't check the checkbox "Insert", then the record will NOT be inserted into the target table.
The same holds true for the three Update flags and the Delete flag in the appropriate manner.

Q2, SCD without an UPD: if you want to work without an UPD transformation, then you will need separate mappings and sessions for the INSERT records, the UPDATE records, and the DELETE records.

Q3: where's the difference to Q2?

Q4, default values:
Treat Source Rows As = Insert
Insert, Update As Update, and Delete are checked by default.

I am so grateful for your blog. Really looking forward to read more.

Thank you,
Sanjay

The Match-and-Merge feature helps us to address customers' issues, although setup is complex as it requires understanding of PAM documents.

What is most valuable?

The Match-and-Merge feature is valuable.

How has it helped my organization?

We are now more equipped to address the customers' issues.

What needs improvement?

  • Performance issues can be looked at
  • Improved release documentation is expected because I feel that the current release document doesn't give you the clear picture of what has been fixed and what has not been fixed from previous versions.

For how long have I used the solution?

3 Years

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We faced issues with User Exits post deployment, but those were addressed by Informatica.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If the guides are followed then the instructions are very well documented about issues that may crop up during up-scaling/upgrading.

How is customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. Informatica has one of the best customer services with an excellent turn around time.

Technical Support:

Very good, a couple of technical support team members are excellent and they handle the case very professionally.

How was the initial setup?

Complex, it is not just a NEXT NEXT NEXT button click setup, it requires understanding of PAM document provided by the vendor and mapping it with your hardware and then carefully setting up each of the elements - database, application server and then the software itself.

What about the implementation team?

In-House along with some help from third parties. Understanding the business and collecting the initial requirement is the most important aspect and moreover verifying the collected requirement should be done so that there are no disconnects or gaps in understanding how the eventual implementation will look like.

What other advice do I have?

The product is the best in the industry (as it is multidomain) and the vendor support is excellent.

I recommend reviewing and assessing the volume of data you will incorporate into the MDM, because the pricing seems to be based on row count used at the MDM Entities you built.

What is most valuable?

The flexibility to interact with many different sources and targets like Oracle, MySQL , Flat Files, Informix, SAP thru PowerExchange, applying different transformations that you can configure in an intuitive way, gives both business and IT teams the opportunity to track the data lineage and also to provide value to the data workflows you create, integrated to feed the MDM solution together with Data Quality processes.

How has it helped my organization?

The portability to use your integration flows into MDM and Data Quality helps to improve the data stewardship and also provides value for the metadata management you can take advantage of to document your business rules while interacting with different business data.

What needs improvement?

The product ranking we provide is 8 out of 10 -- because there are parts of connectivity with SAP Non-Unicode that are not supported by Informatica, since they only provide connectors to write on SAP Unicode. Then, we had to develop and enable the connectivity to write into SAP Non-Unicode.

Mainly, MDM requires improvement when you need to migrate your version to a later one -- because it is very difficult and takes a lot of time to convert the processes you have already developed and implemented on a previous version, and can cause a need to rework the processes.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the Informatica Solution for Data Integration and Data Quality for 12 years. We've been using MDM for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Sometimes the IDD console connectivity.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The difference between components and functionality from one version to the immediate latest one.

How are customer service and technical support?

It is good, however response time is always depending on the support contract you acquire.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

SAP MDG. At that point in time, it was not prepared to provide flexible integration and data quality process to generate a 360 view.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was kind of complex while polishing the business requirements to be translated into technical flows.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I recommend reviewing and assessing the volume of data you will incorporate into the MDM, because the pricing seems to be based on row count used at the MDM Entities you built.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes -- SAP MDG and IBM MDM .

What other advice do I have?

First, you need to assess the status quo of data integration and data quality at your organization, then, after you settle these strategies and implement the solutions, it is advisable to go for MDM.

If you do it the other way around, it will cause a lot of headaches and will cost you many more resources, time, and overall creditability to generate value beyond just results.

We can update the information on the master catalog for urgent tasks.

What is most valuable?

Having access to PIM production, we get all the details of the supplier from here and we also get to update the information on the master catalog for urgent tasks.

How has it helped my organization?

In our department, it's easier to get the information needed in a report or task. I cannot go into details due to confidentiality issues.

What needs improvement?

From my point of view, a quick response time is needed when searching for an item.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this system for almost ten months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues so far.

How is customer service and technical support?

I would rate the technical support a 10/10. They are very helpful and provide updates as and when needed.

You can find almost any product connection that you need.
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the fact that you can find almost any product connection that you need and the list is always expanding."
  • "It needs to be a little more intuitive but it’s really not bad."

What is most valuable?

I like the fact that you can find almost any product connection that you need and the list is always expanding.

How has it helped my organization?

Basically, it just allows connections with Amazon AWS/S3/Redshift.

What needs improvement?

It needs to be a little more intuitive but it’s really not bad. There are plenty of examples as how to use the product from Informatica and YouTube.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for less than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

After the initial setup, the tool seems pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There is plenty of online support available from Informatica.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the past, we have used Informatica PowerCenter.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this product in-house and my advice is just read all the available online support documentation that you can find.

What other advice do I have?

Read through the online documentation that is available.

Data synchronization tasks, mapping designer tasks and scheduling are valuable features.
Pros and Cons
  • "Data synchronization tasks."
  • "Error reporting and debugging need improvement."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are:

  • Data synchronization tasks
  • Mapping designer tasks
  • Scheduling

How has it helped my organization?

We are using this for integration of on-premise Oracle EBS, Navision and cloud applications, such as Salesforce, BigMachines, etc.

What needs improvement?

Error reporting and debugging need improvement.

They need to improve on the upgrade testing process from their end so that it does not cause any issue to existing functionality/setup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for 36 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Sometimes after upgrades, it gives some trouble for already working tasks. We need to report bugs to get a solution from Informatica.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not had scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

I rate support 8/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not have a previous solution.

How was the initial setup?

Setup was straightforward and easy to work with.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I am not involved in pricing and licensing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Dell Boomi.

What other advice do I have?

Informatica Cloud is easy for development and maintenance. It really works fast and is scalable.
