The initial set up and configuration is fairly straight forward, which is one of the strengths of this product.
Pros and Cons
  • "The Informatica MDM tool provided a very robust and cost effective solution to implement a single view of physicians."
  • "The major area of improvement is its GUI front end."

What is most valuable?

  • Matching, merging and survivorship
  • Maintaining cross reference and merge history information

How has it helped my organization?

A lot of my pharmaceutical clients had to implement an Aggregate Spend application to track how much money they are spending on their prescribing physicians. This was need to comply with the Sunshine Act and their was a need to uniquely and unambiguously identify these physicians. The Informatica MDM tool provided a very robust and cost effective solution to implement a single view of physicians.

What needs improvement?

The major area of improvement is its GUI front end. The out of the box solution call Informatica Data Director is not at all user friendly, it is a data stewardship tool. A user friendly and feature rich front end will be a great improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it for over eight years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Only minor issues which can usually be resolved by the Informatica Support team.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Never when the implementation and sizing guidelines were followed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Never when the implementation and sizing guidelines were followed.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service: Customer service is very timely and consists of very capable and competent staff.Technical Support: Technical Support is very timely and consists of very capable and competent staff.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was implementing the Siebel UCM product before while working for Oracle. I had to switch because my client opted for the Informatica/Siperian MDM solution. I have been implementing this product ever since.

How was the initial setup?

The initial set up and configuration is fairly straight forward, which is one of the strengths of this product.

What about the implementation team?

I have implemented this solution with vendor teams as well as in-house ones. A rigorous Vendor Selection process including reference checks are a must if using a vendor to ensure successful implementation. I prefer to work with in-house teams so that it becomes a great learning process for everyone who will have to enhance, maintain and support the MDM application.

What was our ROI?

In most of the implementations we used relative implementation costs rather than ROI and the Informatica MDM solution is very cost effective.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It varies by the size of the projects based upon number of sources, data volumes and quality, complexities, etc.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Most of my clients go through a Product Evaluation and Recommendation phase during their MDM implementation and the other options usually evaluated are solution offerings from IBM, Oracle, SAP, SAS, Trillium, etc.

What other advice do I have?

Always start by forming a robust Data Governance organization to ensure implementation of good data quality standards, policies and processes.

Hi There,

You make learning and reading addictive. All eyes fixed on you. Thank you being such a good and trust worthy guide.

Thank you for your helpful sugestions Informatica IDQ training USA.
I tried the option IS_EXPR_VAR and it is treating the string as a expression.
But my requirement is that I have this expression logic changing for each record.
so I need to lookup for each record, fetch the logic and set this to mapping variable.
But when i try to set it , it gives me below error.

Excellent tutorials - very easy to understand with all the details. I hope you will continue to provide more such tutorials.

Best Regards,
Kevin

Solid Integration tool. GUI is poor and needs improvement.
Pros and Cons
  • "Informatica Data Quality is a solid integration tool."
  • "GUI is poor in IDQ"

What is most valuable?

IDQ integration with Power Centre Designer Repository. On the fly you can move your IDQ artefacts to Power Centre Designer. Later you can use them in a workflow and for scheduling etc.

How has it helped my organization?

Improved Data Quality, after we run the IDQ session which we customize for each client (Developed custom business rules in IDQ).

What needs improvement?

GUI is poor in IDQ

For how long have I used the solution?

Over a year

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No (Depends upon your design and architect)

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service: Customer service is OKTechnical Support: Technical support is OK

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier we used ODI and IDPQ, but the new client wants the development in Informatica.

How was the initial setup?

It was a ittle complex, as there are post installation services you need to create in Informaitca Administrator.

What about the implementation team?

In house team (I was part of the team as an Informatica Administrator and IDQ Developer)

What was our ROI?

Better data quality

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

IBM Data Stage, IBM Information Analyzer and IBM Quality Stage (More cost Centric). Oracle ODI (Oracle Data Integrator) and ODPQ (Oracle Data Quality and Profiling).

Excellent MDM in my opinion. Needs better workflows for our business users.
Pros and Cons
  • "Seamless integration of MDM, data quality and data integration modules."
  • "When we compared Informatica to SAP, we realized that we lose the ability to integrate easily with our SAP business applications"

Valuable Features:

- Seamless integration of MDM, data quality and data integration modules - Repository of data models from other customers - very useful! - Support for multiple domains including product and location data - Flexible architecture supports registry, consolidation, coexistence, and transaction styles. We use the coexistence style. - Management of party data - Performance is good, even as our database has grown in size over the past year

Room for Improvement:

- When we compared Informatica to SAP, we realized that we lose the ability to integrate easily with our SAP business applications - Needs more preconfigured business rules and services - Weak in data stewardship. The UI in particular needs improvement. - Reporting can be improved.

Other Advice:

Facebook integration looks interesting, but we haven't taken advantage of it. Informatica is a very innovative company in my opinion.

Regarding SAP integration- Depends on your scale, existing infrastructure, SLAs, etc. - it's always a minefield. In abstract terms, the products themselves will integrate without major issues. My personal biggest gripe with Informatica is their pricing model, it is outrageous for large data volumes, everything is good until one looks at the price tag.

Data extraction process could be easier and requires a feature to provide data streaming insights
Pros and Cons
  • "The product seems stable enough."
  • "It is more complicated to extract data using the product compared to Visio. The system could display the details on the screen."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product for building static and automatic data lineages.

What needs improvement?

It is more complicated to extract data using the product compared to Visio. The system could display the details on the screen. Additionally, they should add AI features and the capability to provide data streaming insights.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog for two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product seems stable enough.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How was the initial setup?

The product requires maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

I advise others to understand their business use cases. I rate Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog a three out of ten.

On-premises

What is our primary use case?

What needs improvement?

Certain applications aren't accepted. For example, for IBM applications, it takes a lot of time. And certain applications are not being synced with the ION.
