The initial setup is straightforward and the solution is stable.
Pros and Cons
  • "The ability to streamline the process of obtaining signatures from our contractors is valuable."
  • "The scalability has room for improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are infrastructure companies that manage all critical projects and their capital expenditures using Primavera Portfolio Management. Our main advantage is that we have the authority to sign off on projects because we have the budget and CapEx information in the system. This allows us to streamline the flow of signatures with our contractors.

What is most valuable?

The ability to streamline the process of obtaining signatures from our contractors is valuable.

What needs improvement?

When using Primavera Portfolio Management, we need to have resources on the ground who are familiar with the system. However, there is a shortage of such resources in the market. This is one of the biggest challenges we face. It is not easy to find qualified candidates, even if we post a job on a platform like LinkedIn. I am looking for techno-functional or even techno resources, but there are only a few in the market. This is a big challenge.

Oracle does not provide enterprise-level asset management with IBM Maximo. This means that we need to integrate the two systems, which is a costly and time-consuming process. Integration with non-Oracle systems, such as IBM Maximo, is also challenging and expensive. As a result, the only viable option is to integrate the systems at the database level, which is not ideal.

The scalability has room for improvement.

I would like to see the cost of integration reduced.

I would like to receive Oracle's integration requirements so that I do not have to purchase separate modules from them.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on how the database is configured. A database that can be configured and scaled can come at a price, as it requires affordable hardware. The perspective of scalability also depends on the specific use case. For example, Oracle cannot be used to host asset management. My team recently migrated from IBM Maximo to Oracle, but we reached a point where we could not go beyond a certain number of assets. This is because Oracle has a weakness in its query performance when dealing with large amounts of data.

How are customer service and support?

The quality of technical support varies by case. Some issues are resolved quickly, while others have taken up to two months.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, but it becomes more complex when we factor in actual business requirements.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution itself is cost-effective. The expense comes with the integration. For example, the cost of opening the API in Oracle is the same as the cost of Oracle licenses. This is why we did not start integration on our database when we started the evaluation. However, we need the API for everything to run smoothly. Another example is the masking module over our CapEx values. We need this module if we want management to see the figures. It costs $100,000 per year.

What other advice do I have?

I give Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management an eight out of ten.

We have around 600 total users.

We have two administrators that maintain the solution.

We definitely plan to increase our usage of Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management as the company grows. However, there is a concern about how to continue. One option is to purchase the full stack from Oracle, but this is not a cheap option. It is a challenge, but we may be able to afford it if we are willing to pay an additional fee. We would need to run the database and our application in a separate environment because it cannot run on the CC. This is a challenge. In order to get the most out of Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management, we need to stick to Oracle's offer. However, this is not a cheap option. For the current situation, with around 600 users to 100 users internally, it will cost us at least $200,000 per year, not including the license.

For organizations with a single standalone box, it is easy to implement Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management. However, for enterprise organizations with multiple stacks running asset management and another stack running financials, the integration will take time and cost money. To be transparent with management, we need a full overview. To achieve this goal, we need to make our OpEx and CapEx transparent in advance.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Needs to improve its extremely complicated user interface while ensuring the addition of functions in the future
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management is a well-engineered product from an IT perspective."
  • "The solution's user interface is an area with shortcomings that need improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I think Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management is a well-engineered product from an IT perspective. With the product's user interface and from an end user's perspective, it is a very complicated tool, especially for those in the early stages of their profession involved in project management.

What is most valuable?

In terms of operation management and project management, the product needs to have a lot of functions to work together to get the right results you need for the project. The solution's interface should be able to track changes and the implementation time. Basically, we need many tools in our company, among which Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management is a time planning tool for us, and maybe, in some cases, we use it for the Gantt chart.

What needs improvement?

The solution's user interface is an area with shortcomings that need improvement.

I would like more additional functions added to the solution in future releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management for a few weeks. I don't remember the exact version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability can be measured when you use something a lot of times or maybe continuously, but I didn't use the solution for a long period, so I can't judge the solution's stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is not a scalable solution.

I and one of my colleagues were the ones involved with the solution in our company.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management is complex.

The solution can be deployed in an hour.

I don't think that those who are entry-level users who use computers can do the deployment alone. Advanced users who are used to using or installing the solution by themselves can do the solution's deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My company has made an annual payment towards the costs of the solution. Price-wise, the solution is okay.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management, my company had evaluated only three products.

What other advice do I have?

I won't recommend the solution to the staff at my company because I know how it can hinder their work since they will spend a lot of time trying to figure out what they can do with the solution. Some people are satisfied with the solution since they are used to it. Personally, I would not recommend the solution to others.

I rate the overall solution a three and a half out of ten.

Efficiently manages engineering documents for mega projects
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's tech support is good."
  • "They should work on integrating the solution with ERP."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for portfolio management, including engineering document management for mega projects.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution helps our organization to manage large engineering projects. We receive the project plan from contractors residing in different countries. They do all the project and portfolio management activities using Primavera and send us the files. We download the files in our system and start with the work.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable feature is the ease of use. We can handle the engineering project management, including the costings, source linking, and tracking of the tasks very efficiently.

What needs improvement?

They should work on integrating the solution with ERP. Presently, we have all the project planning, including call center data, WPS agreement, etc., in ERP, and we cannot connect it with Primavera. It will be great if they provide integration between these two solutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability as a nine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the solution's scalability as a nine. Our organization has 40 users of the solution and plans to increase it further.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's tech support is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Microsoft Project Server earlier. We switched to Primavera as it has more power to handle mega engineering projects.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is simple and requires one person to deploy it.

What was our ROI?

The solution's ROI is worth it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's pricing is on the higher end compared to Microsoft Project Server. We are fine with the cost as the solution specializes in engineering project management.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is the right tool for engineering project management. I rate it as an eight.

Good for those who have to maintain multi projects, contracts and reporting.
Pros and Cons
  • "Primavera has built-in integration between modules, basic integration with P6 schedules, and the latest Version 14 provides Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher and Webservices API support."
  • "PCM does not provide any flexibility in positioning fields."

Valuable Features:

Formerly called “Expedition" and a Browser based multi-user database supporting Document Control,Contract Management,Change Control and Cost Control features good for those who have to maintain multi projects, contracts and reporting. Primavera has built-in integration between modules, basic integration with P6 schedules. The latest Version 14 provides –Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher –Webservices API support.

Room for Improvement:

Many companies have specific requirements/forms and most will require custom fields. PCM does not provide any flexibility in positioning fields. Also, Custom fields cannot be inter-related or calculated. Daily Report creators require full use access to PCM. Daily Report users require full use access to PCM i.e. PCM has very limited security to keep some information confidential (when outside parties use your PCM to create their daily reports). PCM can be cumbersome to use on a tablet.
