Easy to find information and to shrink large charts but needs to needs to offer basic competitive functionalities

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a self-service for business users without heavy knowledge of IT products. It allows them to create their own content either on custom data or pre-prepared structures and calculations by IT.  On top of that, there is also IT-prepared end-to-end content and global reporting covering mobile reporting mainly in big pharmaceutical corporations. 

We are running an on-premise version in the cloud on Amazon EC2 and Azure

We are using also additional Qlik products such as Mobile, GeoAnalytics, nPrinting, Alerting, and Qlik Data Catalyst

How has it helped my organization?

Qlik Sense is a great tool if you want to start with simple self-service inside your company and get familiarized your business partners with company data and extend a user's data literacy.  

For that, Qlik also provides various programs to help a company adopt the tool. These include the Qlik Continous Classrooms, Data Literacy program, etc. 

The only disadvantage is the custom language which users need to learn from scratch even though we are finding it more user-friendly than DAX or MDX for multidimensional querying of data.

What is most valuable?

The Insight Advisor (Natural Language Processing) feature allows users to find information through a chat bot which also recommends interesting views on data. It's a very nice feature. 

Showing a miniature version of the chart if the case chart is bigger than the screen resolution allows us to have full context at all times. Alternative dimensions and measures in charts help to limit the number of visualizations on-screen and make analytics easier for business users.

What needs improvement?

Providing the same basic capabilities as its competitors - such as an easy setup of colors, pixel-perfect reporting (if needed), better control of visual behavior of visualizations (currently legend and axis names are missing based on screen resolution), et cetera, is needed. 

They need much better server management. Currently, even a single application can crash the whole server. 

They should generally focus more on the evolution of current capabilities rather than doing everything but only at 50% effectiveness.

Qlik Sense has assisted my company in providing management information to users across all levels of the organization. It is extremely clean to view, easy to use, and intuitive to develop with. There are a host of online resources to provide assistance to new users.

The setup is easy and painless, as is data integration and application deployment.

I would recommend this platform to any business looking to pick up a new BI solution, or any that have an existing BI platform but who might be looking to change.

In terms of improvements, Qlik Sense is being constantly updated and new features are being added all the time. Moving forward I would like to see more features that are currently available in QlikView, such as being able to better customize coloring within charts. I would also like to see the ability to add calculated dimensions to the selections tool in the page.

What is our primary use case?

I work in the Data Solutions team at Marsh (Insurance company). We build Qlik Sense dashboards for Client Executives in the Specialties team, tailored to their requirements.

The Client Executives can view their client's portfolio over several years and also see how Marsh is performing in the space. These visualizations help them with client and insurer meetings.

Currently, it is being used for new client wins, client retention, negotiating with insurers, providing time efficiencies, and providing consistency in presentations.

How has it helped my organization?

Qlik Sense has a modern look and feel and a very intuitive UI, so non-technical users find it very user friendly.

Our team has been able to deliver some very complex analytics that was possible only due to the powerful back-end functionalities and availability of extensions.

The NPrinting functionality has also been very helpful for us, as it can deliver canned reports. It has saved a lot of hours for our business users.

Dashboards we built on Qlik Sense have helped with new client wins, client retention, negotiating with insurers, providing time efficiencies, and providing consistency in presentations.

What is most valuable?

The time required to build a dashboard is very good, as it only takes a couple of hours to build a basic dashboard. We use this basic dashboard in our Client Executive meetings where we then start the ideation process and consolidate requirements for the final dashboard. We are able to show the Client Executives the art of possible, which helps them understand what can be done.

It has helped us immensely with Data and Digital Literacy. Business users now understand the importance of data and data of good quality!

What needs improvement?

Several things can be improved, including:

  1. Ability to add and customize reference lines (average, linear regression, etc.) on all charts.
  2. There are features of QlikView that have still not come to Qlik Sense. These include "Always one value selected", option buttons, and checkboxes with extended functionalities in the Qlik bundle. I am currently using an external plug-in for this, but its performance is poor.
  3. Legends for charts that are being colored using a formula.
  4. Ease to add company color palette to Qlik Sense dashboard.
  5. The on-demand report generation button in Qlik Sense currently doesn't work if NPrinting requires Okta verification, which our company uses. So, we are not able to deliver this to our business users. This is a very powerful functionality and we want to use it!

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Qlik Sense for more than two years. Prior to that, I have also used QlikView for one year.

We have been using Qlik Sense for centralized reporting and analytics where we have one source of truth that can not be manipulated by users like spreadsheets. We want users to utilize the reports to analyze the data instead of spending hours producing reports that are never analyzed.

We now have data at our disposal ready for consumption on an hourly basis that use to take users hours to prepare for use. 

Being able to see the reports, numbers, and analysis of the data on a more frequent basis have enabled the company and executives to focus on the problem areas and track this on a regular basis.

What is most valuable?

We love the automated reload of data function and being able to join data together from various different sources. The centralized management console gives you incredible power over the security of your reporting platform and data.

We are able to blend together data from our tracking data, operations data, and financial data to display a complete view of driver behavior, productivity, and financial impact. 

The capability of the software has enabled us to extract tracking data through our tracking provider's APIs using the REST connector built into the software.

What needs improvement?

From the initial setup of the product, we had some struggles getting connections to some of our databases to function, this indicated that some of the data extract drivers can be improved and the addition of some of the older database engines needs to be added in Qlik Sense.

One of the features that would add amazing value to us if we could have a mix of perpetual licenses and subscription licenses. This would give us the benefit to have less frequent users rather on a subscription license and use the perpetual licenses for frequent users.

We have been using Qlik Sense since July 2018.

What is our primary use case?

I would say general business analytics is the primary use of this solution. Anything from Finance files, HR, Operations, Manufacturing, Mining, etc. It's not specific to any use case, but I would say it is used for general all-purpose business analytics.

What is most valuable?

The associative technology is the solution's most valuable aspect.

Qlik was the first company to implement an in-memory associative analytics engine. From the front end, from the UI point of view, data can be joined or included or excluded on the fly. It can be drilled down and drilled through and users can slice and dice it and that type of thing can be done from anywhere in the data to any other place in the data. It doesn't have to be predefined. It doesn't have to have hierarchies or anything like that.

What needs improvement?

The real-time capabilities need to be improved.

What I mean is, the solution needs to have the ability to leave the data where it is. This is actually something that Qlik has been working to solve, however, traditionally, the way that 99% of Qlik customers use the product is in an offline data cache. This means data gets copied into Qlik, into this Associative In-Memory Engine and then the analysis can be done. 

Obviously, that means data is duplicated. It also requires a certain lead time, from the time the data is changed to when the data is available in Qlik. Traditionally, that was something that was a little bit of a hurdle for customers. 

My understanding is that Qlik is working on several features in this area. They acquired some new products. For example, they acquired a product called Utility in the last nine months or so, which has fixed the real-time data replication change, data capture, that type of thing.

I don't think I can think of any new features it needs right now.

The solution needs to make improvements to the licensing model. They need to make it more affordable at scale, and to make it more affordable for those companies at the low end of the market as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for four or so years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable product. I haven't had any issues with it. I can't recall facing bugs or glitches. The solution hasn't crashed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution does scale wonderfully.

From a technology point of view, the system is quite scalable, horizontally and vertically. You can add more nodes into the system, and you can load balance between nodes and you can of course scale in particular by increasing capacity on the nodes. 

I would say one of the things that hinders scalability a little bit is the licensing models, which is mainly per user, which at scale can become quite expensive.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our team is extremely technically proficient because we've been around the Qlik product set for many years. It's not that common for us to need support from Qlik. If I have to be honest, in the last couple of years, their support has been okay when we needed it. I wouldn't say it's great. It's a little bit slow and unresponsive sometimes.

The last issue we had had to do with accessing the system via Apple devices with SSL certificates. The problem we had was that we implemented it for the customer with an additional security measure. It was a reverse proxy with its own SSL certificate and that used to work and then stopped working and Qlik hasn't been able to really help us to troubleshoot it properly. It was a nonstandard solution as far as they concerned.

They ended up responding and helping us within about 24 hours.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite straightforward and happens quickly.

Deployment typically takes a couple of weeks. It could take longer in certain instances.

When I say deployment I'm not talking about installing the software. That's installing the software and developing the first solution.

Most of the time implementation is only done by one person. Obviously, on the larger projects, it can take a few more staff members. For the most part, it's a one-person project and the system is not too complex to configure and set up. Normally the BI Developer is also the BI Administrator and the BI Configurator.

Maintenance would not be a full-time job. One person can handle it part-time.

What about the implementation team?

We help our clients implement and deploy the solution if they require our assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My understanding is that there is just a license fee. I don't believe there are ancillary costs on top of that. It may not be an affordable option for smaller organizations, however, It's more suited to larger companies due to the costs involved.

What other advice do I have?

We are a reseller. We do implementation and deployment as well. All types of businesses use the product, from small to large enterprises. Company sizes range from a few people to thousands of active employees.

Qlik Sense, of course, is a new product that sort-of replaces QlikView. A lot of our customers are still using QlikView. Therefore, we are still using the product, but we're not actively selling it anymore. We are supporting it because all new customers are Qlik Sense.

While we mostly deal with on-premises deployments, the cloud is quickly becoming more popular and has just become available for this solution recently.

The advice I would give to other organizations would be kind of general. For BI projects, the trick is to start with the business value and then find the data to support the business value. Don't try to start with the data and then try and find the business value for that data.

The tool really is a good tool and you can do almost anything with it, but just using the tool is not going to deliver value to your customers. You need to help your customer find business value in what they want to do and then deliver the solution for them.

I would probably give the solution a nine out of ten. The reason being that it is a product that offers real value to businesses and it offers it fast.

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for process optimization and getting insight into making better decisions based on data visualization. We have deployed to multiple environments, standard and self-service, among a variety of user groups based on the requirements. This is valid for multiple locations around the world including North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. 

Use cases are valid for most of the company's divisions, though some of them are using it more often. We have both user types, including consumers who don't have as many privileges and power users who can take advantage of most of the features.

How has it helped my organization?

Qlik Sense has provided insight into specific areas that enabled us to shorten the supply cycle, give a better overview of the company's production, increase profitability, and improve the effectiveness of respective vaccines.

Basically, it improved either processes or decisions for effectively promoting, demoting, or changing products. It presents visualizations enabling easier identification of compounds that lead to greater effectiveness of either trial testing, product delivery, or their supply to the various regions around the world.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this solution are:

  • It has intuitive and user-friendly navigation, which facilitates users' adoption of the tool.
  • The associative searching and filtering capability is a unique feature among other BI tools, and one does not need to deeply understand the underlying data.
  • The in-memory compression and processing enable quick responses from the server, provided they are properly sized.
  • With Adaptable visualizations (mobile/desktop), there is no need to create multiple versions of the report, one for desktop and one for mobile.
  • The powerful data handling and preparation ability to transform data is very helpful.

What needs improvement?

The areas that we feel Qlik Sense can be improved are:

  • The administrator tools such as user sessions, active users, task sessions, and the ability to kill, provide insufficient power over what is happening on the platform.
  • There is an inability to effectively manage (pre)caching (scheduling, assigning for respective user groups, etc), especially without community extensions or your own development. There is simply no way to automate.
  • This solution needs inbuild versioning, backup, dependency analysis, and regression testing.
  • This is an imparity between Windows and Cloud versions with respect to functionality.
  • Shared development would be a helpful inclusion.
  • Core functionality delivered by extensions (Telemetry, CLI) is in need of improvement.

We have been using Qlik Sense for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Unless you make users doing development, or exploration of their data in the same environment as is the production, you should be good to go.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is pretty good, although there are limitations, especially for the Windows version, on the number of machines in one environment.

How are customer service and technical support?

Unless you pay a premium for Priority support the experience is not great. For some issues, you might wait weeks before a resolution is reached.

Business usually wants to explore new options on how to analyze data. We felt that new tools might offer new capabilities.

Our setup included multiple projects, multiple divisions, multiple environments, cloud setup, security, and load balancing. It was especially extensive.

We used both an in-house team and received assistance from a third-party.
