Database management, schema management, and restructuring existing PL/SQL code as well as developing new functionality.
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
SQLDetective made our lives a lot easier. It works pretty well as a standalone development and management front-end as well as a valuable add-on in case of application developers, for example. The mettle that makes up the genes of the Detective immediately starts to spread to the user once connected to a database instance.
What is most valuable?
Scenarios and a highly customizable user interface are the two pillars that our decision for SQLDetective was based on as well as the TKPROF front-end, especially implemented and delivered as a surprise based on our suggestion. Very likely not our suggestion based on our request solely, but we were very happy about this specific support.
What needs improvement?
We are currently very happy with all the good things provided. We feel free to enjoy and are looking forward to anything added in the future.
So what can be improved? Maybe one day, we could participate into a script repository as discussed in the early days of SQLDetective.
For how long have I used the solution?
More than five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No issues. Not at the moment. Furthermore, SQLDetective has been the first alternative that I used which allowed access to huge tables and in a convenient fashion.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No issues. Not at the moment.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer support has always been very responsive, even if I never had to contact the technical support outside an ongoing beta testing process.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I still use PL/SQLDeveloper in parallel. I used it before, simply due to the integration into the Delphi Development environment in the good old days of the late 90s. Even if others perceived such add-ons as coltish gimmicks, I must say I loved such things.
My focus moved to manipulating and querying huge data sets rather than developing PL/SQL packages. My focus shifts from time to time or quickly, dependent on the situation and usage scenario.
Oracle SQL Developer does its job very well today.
I would not switch to a Mac version of SQLDetective or Linux. CLI is sufficient in most cases anyway on one of those two operating systems where any way to access information is better than none.
What was our ROI?
SQLDetective is a huge time saver.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I did not miss evaluating a single one.
What other advice do I have?
I would love to enjoy SQLDetective on other database platforms too, but I think it is better to have a portfolio of rock solid tools for the Oracle database at hand and use CLIs in general since most of them are more than sufficient.
