What is our primary use case?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is primarily used by organizations that need to store data and retrieve it quickly. We use it for storing time-series data that are typically generated on the fly. We deal with large volumes of data running into terabytes, and we want users to be able to access the data without any performance or latency issues.
This particular use case is for a financial services organization that has an application used to store all the trades that they undertake. As trades are being executed on the stock market, dealers must book deals, commit deals, make changes, make updates, and close those deals, which represents a significant volume of transactions. Aerospike helps us keep all of that data and we run it across multiple partitions on SSD storage.
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service allows us to implement the CAP theorem, which encompasses consistency, availability, and partitioning. A strong point for us is ensuring that data is striped across multiple partitions because we do not want to lose any data. We also ensure that the data is readily available when we need it, and the data stays consistent. Aerospike has provided those capabilities effectively.
Additional capabilities include time-to-live index configurations that allow us to decide how long the data should stay and when the data should expire. The provision for horizontal scaling helps us build partitions that provide better and faster response times. Low latency is also a strong point that we have benefited from.
How has it helped my organization?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service has impacted our organization positively in many ways. It has helped us improve our observability and has improved our high availability. We are now very rack aware and very replication factor aware.
Queries that used to take approximately two to ten minutes to complete now take less than sixty seconds on Aerospike. We are now able to provide observability metrics, and we can meet those observability metrics with Aerospike because the response time is even lower than the provided metrics for observability. Aerospike has improved our performance significantly. Our performance metrics and observability metrics were quite high previously, but Aerospike has brought them down. Since we started using Aerospike, the metrics are substantially lower than what they were with previous databases.
What is most valuable?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service offers the ability to provide a faster response time. The response time for end users is fast, and we can use it for features such as fraud detection as well as real-time query analysis. The strong points that Aerospike brings are real-time or near-real-time query response as well as the ability to use it for fraud detection.
For fraud detection, we have built applications on top of Aerospike that communicate with Aerospike Cloud Managed Service. We have an application that logs in and at regular intervals checks Aerospike Cloud Managed Service to monitor activity and ensure that there are no unusual transactions doing anything out of the ordinary, and it reports them almost immediately. Unlike conventional databases where you write a query and have to wait for some time, Aerospike gives us a faster response time, allowing us to identify transactions much faster and move forward.
What needs improvement?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service should ensure that it can work across multiple cloud providers. Rather than deploying Aerospike to work only on a single cloud provider such as AWS, they should ensure that Aerospike can work across multi-cloud environments. In an ideal scenario, I could set up an Aerospike cluster with some nodes on Google Cloud, some nodes on AWS, some nodes on Microsoft Azure, and maybe some nodes running on Google Compute Cloud.
Another needed improvement would be to ensure that Aerospike can work across various software development kits, ranging from Python, Go, and Rust to other languages. The most important thing is not owning the database product, but ensuring that the database product can integrate with any platform and enable developers to build applications that work seamlessly with Aerospike. In the future, Aerospike might also consider building a native development platform that would enable Aerospike developers and users to build applications in real-time that integrate closely with Aerospike Cloud Managed Service.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Aerospike Cloud Managed Service for approximately two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is absolutely stable. My colleague and I are able to take vacations, and everything continues running without issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is very scalable and consistent. When we put data into Aerospike, we know that we do not lose data because it is always there. Horizontal scaling and high availability are the key benefits that it has given us, and I really value those benefits.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support for Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is excellent. The team is always available and responds to every issue when we reach out to them. In terms of a scale of one to ten, I would give them a ten in terms of support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used Oracle. It was quite a tedious process that required us to hire a team of over six persons. With Aerospike, there are just two team members, and we are able to manage and maintain the infrastructure effectively. Oracle was our major product before we transitioned to Aerospike.
What was our ROI?
The primary example of return on investment is the ease of use, which does not require us to have too many Aerospike administrators, which invariably becomes a cost saving. If you compare a relational database like Oracle, a team typically needs approximately five to six engineers. With Aerospike, there are just the two of us that went for the training, and we can manage the entire Aerospike infrastructure in the organization. Even when we are on vacation, one person can manage for the other, and the entire system continues to function. In terms of resources, we do not have a lot of personnel managing Aerospike, and we have never encountered a crisis.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I did not make the purchasing decision for Aerospike Cloud Managed Service; I simply use the tool. They deployed it on AWS.
If I had to get involved with that decision, I would say that Aerospike is pocket-friendly, and most organizations would be looking in that direction.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Aerospike Cloud Managed Service, we evaluated other options, including MongoDB, Couchbase, and ClickHouse. We decided to go with Aerospike because it checked all the boxes in terms of ease of use and response time. Real-time query response time was really one of the things we were looking for, and Aerospike provided all of that.
What other advice do I have?
On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Aerospike Cloud Managed Service a nine.
I chose nine because there is always room for improvement. Aerospike has a great product, but the need for them to constantly improve the product is why I scored them a nine. They have a great product, but they need to keep looking at the current trends in the developer community and user community, and keep improving to address those challenges. Before long, they will be a ten. Maybe in another twelve to eighteen months, if this survey is conducted again, I would score them a ten.
Regarding governance and security, I have not evaluated these areas extensively, but I think it is imperative that Aerospike ensures that they have great governance and security tooling on their database.
Regarding the output reliability, Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is reliable. It is a NoSQL database that uses key-value pairs, and the key-value pair system has always worked quite effectively. The usefulness for me is the fact that the response time is significantly faster than most relational databases because speed is a key and critical component for most organizations today. Speed to respond to customer requests and speed to respond to challenges are essential. Speed and response are key things that every database vendor needs to focus on, and I think Aerospike is taking a great step in this direction.
Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is deployed in our organization using a public cloud on AWS and we also have some deployments on Azure. We use AWS mostly with Aerospike Cloud Managed Service.
If you want to deploy a NoSQL database for a use case that gives you the ability to quickly test and deploy data and applications, Aerospike Cloud Managed Service is worth considering. It runs off the cloud, is quick and easy to deploy, and it is also easy to manage as the data starts to grow.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
