Veritas NetBackup Reviews

Veritas NetBackup is successfully used on a virtual platform where we are taking VM backups for almost 88 plus virtual machines in our environment through Veritas software. Besides data backup, we back up files, folders, SQL data, and other applications data.

The features in Veritas NetBackup that I have found most valuable include the connectivity and channels between different sites, from the data center to disaster recovery sites, where we duplicate from our main data center to other disaster recovery sites.

I find the deduplication and compression features in Veritas NetBackup useful for optimized storage, as we are saving a lot of space in our disk appliance as well as in the tape media. We use both platforms, online and offline, where online goes to disk appliance and the offline goes to tape media, and in both cases we are using deduplication and compression.

In my opinion, the main benefits Veritas NetBackup provides are that it is a unified platform where we can integrate all the requirements such as online backup, offline backup, and virtualization backup in one single platform, although my only concern is the licensing structure.

Regarding automated disaster recovery, we have not used Veritas NetBackup automated disaster recovery because according to the RFP terms and conditions, we are not supposed to have automated failover or failback, as we are a government entity and cannot violate the rules of the RFP.

My feedback about granular recovery in Veritas NetBackup is that we have been doing verifications of the backed-up data to restore from point to point and time to time, focusing on file level or database level.

When it comes to integration with cloud services, we have not started because we are a government entity and are not allowed to store any data in the cloud at this time.

From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong. When I initiate a backup from my laptop or server to the appliance or the tape media using Veritas NetBackup, the encryption channels are not strong, and there are not many options available. Whatever is there is by default and not changeable. We cannot modify any encryption facilities, and security is a big concern nowadays, so you need to look into that.

Regarding the functionality part of Veritas NetBackup, I think this encryption feature should be stronger and integrated from point to point, not just at specific levels. When I initiate a backup, all the communication channels involved should be encrypted until it reaches the endpoint, meaning from client to server, server to client, and client device.

I have been working with Veritas NetBackup for almost ten plus years.

For stability, I would rate Veritas NetBackup an eight.

Regarding scalability, I give it a seven because recently we took some expansion units, but we are not able to configure and log in the old ones, which might be a compatibility issue or the product could be obsolete. I feel that if you can keep it at least two or three levels back or forward with backward compatibility available, it would help people use the old disk storage and get more storage space.

The technical support from Veritas is rated an eight, as the local partners are good and support us. I cannot say I am totally satisfied with my local partner, but the rating would be around eight and a half.

We are using both Veritas NetBackup software and appliance solutions. I would rate this review an eight overall.

My main use case for Veritas NetBackup is backups. I use Veritas NetBackup for everything, starting with Oracle databases, MS SQL, VMware, Hyper-V, simple file, and bare-metal recoveries—everything I need to back up in customer infrastructure.

Veritas NetBackup handles all those different backup types in a pretty straightforward manner, especially with VMware and the databases; I simply work with the APIs and things work seamlessly. It is a solid, reliable solution.

I have found Veritas NetBackup to be the most reliable backup solution I have worked with so far. Being a solution architect with a portfolio of solutions to offer to customers, I have found it to be very reliable and it simply stands out when called upon.

In my opinion, the best features Veritas NetBackup offers include the fantastic new user interface and the simplicity when it comes to working with the appliances, which is straightforward. The new interface has changed my day-to-day work compared to the older version by allowing me to access it from anywhere, and I have so much information in a very simple interface, requiring fewer clicks to achieve what I needed before.

I love the way Veritas NetBackup is security-aware and how they are evolving to become a security company with the merger with Cohesity. Veritas NetBackup has positively impacted our organization as I am a reseller, and it forms the biggest part of what I resell; it is my bread and butter. I have seen value delivered to customers I sold Veritas NetBackup to because they now have a reliable solution that they can always depend on, allowing CIOs to sleep better.

The measurable outcomes and feedback I have seen from my customers after deploying Veritas NetBackup include the peace of mind CIOs and the people dealing with business continuity receive due to the reliability that it provides to them; it really gives them a lot of comfort and they can sleep well.

On the support side, I think Veritas needs to improve because the support is really lacking; otherwise, the product itself is a good product. The needed improvements I would mention include that support tickets take too long to be solved and the quality of engineers they have for support has lately become lacking; I get the feeling that I am working with people who just started supporting Veritas NetBackup recently. If cases get escalated to the backline team, the backline team is solid and understands the solution, but I hardly get access to them, so support is the key area needing improvement.

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that the appliance licensing is a bit tricky and a bit expensive, especially when I have to license the hardware and the software; otherwise, for Veritas NetBackup software itself, the pricing is acceptable.

My customers did evaluate other options before choosing Veritas NetBackup including Veeam, Commvault, and Micro Focus solutions.

The advice I would give to others looking into using Veritas NetBackup is that it is a stable solution that does the job; it is simple, straightforward, and reliable. Veritas NetBackup any day. I do have additional thoughts about Veritas NetBackup; it is a fantastic product and I hope they can work on the quality of support they offer to their partners and customers so they can move to the next level. Otherwise, I am a strong supporter of Veritas NetBackup; I love it and it is Veritas NetBackup any day. I found this interview easy and straightforward with no changes needed for the future. I would rate this review a nine overall.

Our main use cases for Veritas NetBackup are general standard backups of file system backups and standard functionality, which is not very complicated.

In certain cases, we also take virtual machines backups.

The features of Veritas NetBackup that are most useful for us involve different backup scenarios such as huge contents, including our file server repositories.

We have to write that backup on the tape media, which is why we observe that Veritas NetBackup is a very strong product in these areas.

Regarding granular recovery, we sometimes use certain files, specifically accidentally deleted or required files from the backups, in maintaining data continuity. The feature is effective and works every time.

The interface in Veritas NetBackup is very friendly and useful, and it has been standard during the last 10 years. We are very used to this interface and do not feel any complications.

Veritas NetBackup is basically a single product which fulfills all the technical requirements specifically required for the backup job or the backup domain. It supports multi platforms, multi applications, and multiple hardware at the same time, so we generally feel it is a full feature solution.

Most importantly, they have very tight integration at a very granular level, and recently we inducted another product Veritas File System in our environment because we have an issue with huge content data, so we have optimized the problem of that data by using the Veritas File System VxFS.

Veritas NetBackup is a scalable solution for us. It is a very comprehensive solution that can manage numerous backups, and we already have a somewhat complicated environment in which backups are first written on the backup appliance and then moved to tape, and everything is managed through Veritas NetBackup very easily.

The pure challenge we face with Veritas NetBackup is ransomware attacks in any IT environment.

We would really appreciate if Veritas offers products by which we can secure our backups against these ransomware attacks.

We have been working with Veritas NetBackup for the last 10 years.

In the last 10 years, I have never faced a single incident regarding stability with Veritas NetBackup.

I have had no issues with Veritas NetBackup, and because I am not using a very complex environment, when I have had issues, I just received exact responses and good support from Veritas NetBackup.

I have evaluated other vendors before working with Veritas NetBackup, and I found there are certain limitations in their products.

Veritas is a very old organization with extensive experience in that domain, making it good software for backup operations.

Setting up Veritas NetBackup is easy.

We deployed Veritas NetBackup ourselves, without using an integrator, reseller, or consultant.

We see value for money with Veritas NetBackup. It is suitable for our nature of business because data is very critical, and we cannot compromise on backup, so we always prefer an enterprise class solution.

Veritas NetBackup is quite expensive, and sometimes vendors do not suggest it and always recommend different other options, especially after certain points, which is a concern.

As far as our core objective is concerned, our functionality is present in Veritas NetBackup, which is why we still stick with it.

I have evaluated other vendors before working with Veritas NetBackup, and I found there are certain limitations in their products.

Veritas is a very old organization with extensive experience in that domain, making it good software for backup operations.

We do not use automated disaster recovery in Veritas NetBackup, and we also do not have knowledge about that product.

We do not have a cloud environment; we are totally on-premises.

Deduplication is already enabled at the hardware layer, so we generally do not need that feature on the Veritas side.

We do not have a very big environment, but it is complicated, so we just focus on standard backups.

The rest of all features are basically maintained on a backup appliance HPE MSA 6660, where the hardware automatically manages deduplication or compression related tasks.

I definitely recommend Veritas NetBackup as a first choice for a backup tool.

However, as mentioned, ransomware attacks are very common, and customers are really looking for a solution that can truly have that feature in the backup software.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate Veritas NetBackup a 10.

We use Veritas NetBackup for disaster recovery and backup operations. It supports our disaster recovery strategies with a simulation engine, allowing us to simulate failures and generate reports. We also use it in conjunction with VMware for our operations.

Veritas NetBackup has significantly improved our disaster recovery strategies by introducing a simulation engine. This allows us to simulate failures without actually running through them, which helps in planning. The latest version also supports Windows 2022, which was not covered by previous versions. Moreover, it has helped us shrink our backup windows, reducing the downtime for our SAP ERP from eight hours to 15 minutes.

The simulation engine is highly valuable as it allows us to simulate what a failure would be like and generate reports. This feature eliminates the need to run through actual failures, saving time and effort. Additionally, the latest version supports Windows 2022.

We are looking forward to testing a feature that promises to allow us to host a workload directly from the backup appliance without rehydrating any items. The new version also promises improved governance documents, which we will be testing. However, we are cautious as vendors sometimes overpromise.

We have been using Veritas NetBackup since 2010, making it approximately fourteen years.

Veritas NetBackup has been very stable for us. I would rate its stability as a solid ten.

Initially, scalability was limited, but the current version allows us to use any commodity hardware, making it much more scalable. I would rate its scalability as a nine.

The technical support has been very responsive. During our upgrade, we had an issue with one of our appliances losing its configuration. The support team resolved the issue within six hours.

We previously used IBM Tivoli and HP Data Protector. Both of these products were becoming very expensive. We switched to Veritas due to its feature set and cost-effectiveness.

The initial setup was quite easy for us. It took about five to six hours as we installed it in a cluster. The familiarity of our operators with the product made the process straightforward.

We had two principal engineers and three other individuals who were learning from the process. The principal engineers were primarily responsible for the installation.

Veritas NetBackup has positively impacted our operational costs by significantly reducing our backup windows and providing cost-effective solutions.

The product is cost-effective, and I would rate its pricing as an eight out of ten. The pricing model is based on the amount of data transferred, making it manageable for us.

We started looking at other options such as Zerto due to the recent acquisition of Veritas by a new vendor.

I would recommend Veritas NetBackup due to its ease of use, scalability, and cost-effectiveness per terabyte. It is a solid product for disaster recovery and backup operations.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

We use Veritas NetBackup to back up our data and restore it if needed.

As the volume of our backup increased, our backup speed decreased. We needed a solution to perform the backup faster, so we started using Veritas NetBackup.

NetBackup is deployed on-premises.

Veritas NetBackup is the first line of defense when disaster strikes. Before performing disaster recovery, we must have a good backup of our image that is also protected from ransomware. This way, we have a golden image that is resilient to ransomware attacks. We saw the benefits of Veritas NetBackup within the first three months.

Veritas NetBackup is a popular solution, so there are many troubleshooting forums available, even when we don't have access to technical support.

The backup and restoration are 100 percent guaranteed. We have a full backup and a golden image.

The backup operation interface is not as mature as those of Veritas's competitors and has room for improvement. Therefore, we are still working on the Java console, which means that we will have to use it to enter, monitor, and manage our backup jobs.

I have been using Veritas NetBackup for three years.

Technical support is straightforward. They check the problem, identify the issue, and fix it without wasting time chatting.

We previously used Dell NetWorker, but they charged extra for their support, so we switched to Veritas NetBackup.

The initial deployment was straightforward. The installation takes two hours and after the installation, we have to create the policies for backup jobs and make schedules.

A professional services representative will assign an IP address to the backup server and open the port for the security team to connect the backup server to the clients.

The implementation was done by a member of the professional services team.

We have seen a return on investment because Veritas NetBackup guarantees our data backup, ensuring that our infrastructure can always be restored in the event of an attack.

When we consider the quality and value of Veritas NetBackup, it is worth the cost.

We evaluated Commvault Backup & Recovery, a powerful backup solution, but their support was not as good as NetBackup's. Commvault charged extra for support in order to access their forums.

I would rate Veritas NetBackup ten out of ten.

Veritas NetBackup is managed by two people and serves our ministry with nearly ten thousand employees. There are nearly ten departments, with a storage capacity of 100 terabytes.

Veritas NetBackup is a mature solution, and I recommend it and its professional services. 

We use the platform for backup purposes.

There could be granular control over metadata components, specifically in the context of JSON data for the product. It allows for the restoration of ACLs, but it could enhance control over various other metadata components.

We have been using Veritas NetBackup since 2005.

We are using Veritas NetBackup to protect the data of our entire organization, including 4500 users. I rate the scalability a nine out of ten.

The initial setup process is straightforward. However, we encountered a few challenges while configuring security templates, such as two-factor authentication and certificate validation.

Veritas NetBackup has significantly streamlined our backup and recovery processes by providing a single pane of view across various environments. Its enterprise-scale capabilities enable seamless support for diverse workloads, including MongoDB, Cassandra, and other critical components. It supports our disaster recovery strategy by automating verification between the primary and DR data sites.

The most beneficial features of Veritas NetBackup for our data protection needs include the native accelerator feature, which significantly reduces our backup windows. The integration with hardware provider snapshots allows us to achieve even shorter backup windows.

The application and compression capabilities have significantly impacted our storage efficiency by managing around 30 devices, including NetBackup and Flex appliances. The deduplication ratio between NetBackup and Data Domain ranges from approximately 13:1 to 17:1.

The deduplication and the accelerated functions have tremendously improved our IT operations. A 65-terabyte database, which previously took 14 days to process, has now been reduced to a significantly shorter duration of three days.

Its support for various modern workloads has been crucial as our company evolves its applications and embraces modern languages. It ensures a consistent and efficient data protection strategy across legacy and contemporary workloads.

We can also transition the license from client- and client-server-based to a front-end terabyte model, in which deduplication plays a crucial role.

I recommend it to others and rate it an eight out of ten.

We primarily use the solution for snapshot backups and then some file-level backups and database backups, for sure. It is also a solution that can be used for disaster recovery. If some issue happens in the data centers, we can recover quite quickly and easily.

I use the solution to make sure my clients have backups so they can recover faster if they have an issue. Using this solution, business continuity goes up. That's a big up for the business side.

The backup to any point in time is great.

It's not out of the box; you can customize it and choose various ways to have it running. Between data centers, you can choose how to implement your backups.

They are a worldwide organization and it's always possible to contact them, day or night.

We were able to witness the benefits of using the solution within weeks of using it.

They could improve the complexity. You need to specialize in it. Sometimes it's really difficult when you integrate many different things. It would be ideal if they could simplify it.

The reporting of the backups could be better. We'd like to have easier reports to see when backups happen if they are successful and how often they happen. Reporting should be displayed in a more user-friendly way. 

Right now, you need querying and scripting to get things done. It's more difficult sometimes to use than other products.

I've used the solution for more than ten years. 

The stability is quite good in this version. In previous versions, two or three years ago, they were not as stable. 

We use the solution in four locations and we maintain 6,000 or 7,000 servers inside NetBackup.

They have quite a broad portfolio. You can choose how much scalability you'd like. It depends on the needs of the company. It depends also on what kind of environment you have. It usually has no problems. We're increasing the capacity and functionality.

Technical support varies. Some are very good. If you feel support is lacking you can redirect your case elsewhere and get to the right person. You need to really explain your issue well and if you do they will help you quickly. 

They could always improve their services a bit.

We previously used Tivoli from IBM. That was nine or ten years ago when IBM was much bigger. Now, there are a lot of systems that are virtualized and we decided to make a big change as IBM was still more for physical systems.

I was involved in the deployment. The process was rather complex. You do need some skill to implement it. 

It took one year to really migrate to the new product.

You need to set up all your cabling and firewall ports and make sure that your solution is available for the infrastructure you want to backup and restore. Technically, you need to involve other people that you want to have file-level backups or database backups. You need to know what to back up and what you don't need to back up. You need to do some test backups and test restores to make sure that everything is available.

We had four people managing the implementation and we have two people now handling maintenance. 

The ROI is not always quite visible, however, if it helps keep your company up and running, and you avoid downtime that can affect your users, it's a return on investment for the user. 

The pricing is rather expensive. However, it's a good product. If it's good it's normal that you would pay so much for it. Of course, it could always be cheaper. 

There are different licenses. An enterprise license is all-inclusive. They may also charge per terabyte, which can get expensive if you have a big company.

We looked at other options, including Veeam and Data Protector. 

I've only tested some of the cloud functionality and mostly deal with the on-premises version. 

I'm a consultant and implementer. I work for financial institutions primarily as my clients. I administer the environment and make sure new implementations are done.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. 

I would advise new users to test the product, compare it, and use it to see if it's performing well.

From time to time it's a good idea to re-evaluate and make sure it's the best option for you and it's working as it should be. Sometimes there are multiple ways to solve the same problem. 

We use it for backup, business continuity, disaster recovery, and legal retention.

We use it like any other backup solution for resource restoration when needed and for populating systems in environments with data.

We use NetBackup's data management strategies for multi-target backups and retentions. That's the short answer. 

The full explanation is quite involved. It would require describing our environment, our workflows, and how we use policies and vaulting policies to move data around. 

But to keep it brief, NetBackup simplifies managing data across multiple targets with various retention periods.

NetBackup is part of a multi-layer strategy. It's one of the many tools we use, to ensure we don't rely on a single product. So, the product has positively impacted our protection strategy.

Moreover, we're satisfied with its performance when it comes to the deduplication function.

Its ability to cover a large spectrum of products and operating systems is invaluable. We evaluated other products but always found certain limitations like some products had only intel-based virtualization, while others had power servers. 

But this product offers cross-platform recovery, which is a major advantage over other products.

There is room for improvement in the implementation of Power servers.

In future releases, implementing synthetic backup for Oracle databases would be great.

I have been using this product since 2009. 

I would rate the stability a ten out of ten. It is very stable. 

I would rate the scalability a nine out of ten. We are managing approximately two gigabytes of front-end backups and four people are responsible for it. 

It is easy to scale to fit our data environment when our data starts growing.

We started with one, then we ended up with three now running in production, and we scaled all three of them. 

There is room for improvement in the quality of the support.

We use an on-premises deployment.

We deployed on our own. We created the environment, multiple environments to be backed up in our environment, our production environment, and it takes about five hours.

However, managing NetBackup for recovery processes depends on the environment. 

In my environment, with a team that has ten years of experience, it's simple, though it might not be as easy for beginners. But it is not that complicated either, it is doable. 

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten. 

The solution backs up applications and databases like Microsoft Exchange, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and VMware.

I've restored and recovered application, disk, and server failures. The solution has been beneficial to us. We could see the benefits of the tool almost immediately. We don't need to have a failure to use a backup. Sometimes, to create a test environment, we clone an environment from the backup and have it up and running.

The backup and restore features are helpful.

The product must enable data migration from on-premise to the cloud. It must provide features that support a hybrid approach. It should provide interconnectivity to manage data across multi-cloud providers.

I have been using the solution for about eight years.

The tool is stable.

The tool is scalable. It is able to increase its capacity and functionalities based on our demands. My organization is planning to increase its usage.

The technical support can be better.

The deployment of the appliance was pretty straightforward. It gets complex when we start integrating the appliance into the media server to increase the library and back up multiple operating systems. Our landscape is not small. The deployment can be simple or complex, depending on the phase we are in at a particular time. We cannot deploy the solution and walk away. The product evolves as the environment grows.

Last year, we swapped out some appliances that were at the end of life. Taking those out and bringing in other things was simple. Deploying libraries is complex. It's not a static space. It's a very dynamic space. Every year, we take a look at the environment and make changes. The number of people involved in the deployment varies. Sometimes, we need two, other times, more. We have about five people in our backup team.

Veritas’ partners helped us with the deployment.

Measuring the return on investment on backup and recovery is very difficult. There were possible scenarios where potential problems have been resolved in our organization due to the tool, and we were able to restore services.

The solution is expensive. I rate the pricing an eight out of ten. The price could be a problem for smaller businesses. We’re engaged with the product as an enterprise. We might have received a lot of discounts on the price. It might not be the same for a small-scale business.

I recommend the tool to others. It's an enterprise solution. It comes with various options that can meet different needs. If someone is looking for a backup and recovery solution that meets the needs of both large and small-scale businesses, Veritas NetBackup is a good option. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.
