The backup and restore features are helpful, but the tool is expensive, and the technical support must be improved
Pros and Cons
- "The backup and restore features are helpful."
- "The product must enable data migration from on-premise to the cloud."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
I've restored and recovered application, disk, and server failures. The solution has been beneficial to us. We could see the benefits of the tool almost immediately. We don't need to have a failure to use a backup. Sometimes, to create a test environment, we clone an environment from the backup and have it up and running.
What is most valuable?
The backup and restore features are helpful.
What needs improvement?
The product must enable data migration from on-premise to the cloud. It must provide features that support a hybrid approach. It should provide interconnectivity to manage data across multi-cloud providers.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for about eight years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The tool is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The tool is scalable. It is able to increase its capacity and functionalities based on our demands. My organization is planning to increase its usage.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support can be better.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
How was the initial setup?
The deployment of the appliance was pretty straightforward. It gets complex when we start integrating the appliance into the media server to increase the library and back up multiple operating systems. Our landscape is not small. The deployment can be simple or complex, depending on the phase we are in at a particular time. We cannot deploy the solution and walk away. The product evolves as the environment grows.
Last year, we swapped out some appliances that were at the end of life. Taking those out and bringing in other things was simple. Deploying libraries is complex. It's not a static space. It's a very dynamic space. Every year, we take a look at the environment and make changes. The number of people involved in the deployment varies. Sometimes, we need two, other times, more. We have about five people in our backup team.
What about the implementation team?
Veritas’ partners helped us with the deployment.
What was our ROI?
Measuring the return on investment on backup and recovery is very difficult. There were possible scenarios where potential problems have been resolved in our organization due to the tool, and we were able to restore services.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is expensive. I rate the pricing an eight out of ten. The price could be a problem for smaller businesses. We’re engaged with the product as an enterprise. We might have received a lot of discounts on the price. It might not be the same for a small-scale business.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend the tool to others. It's an enterprise solution. It comes with various options that can meet different needs. If someone is looking for a backup and recovery solution that meets the needs of both large and small-scale businesses, Veritas NetBackup is a good option. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

The solution can be used in large organizations to back up several virtual machines
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of Veritas NetBackup is the protection policies or protection module."
- "Once the protection plan is created, we cannot pause or resume via the web administration page."
What is our primary use case?
We use Veritas NetBackup to back up about 200 virtual machines.
How has it helped my organization?
Sometimes, we cannot connect to vCenter because of certification issues, and we use the solution to renew the vCenter certification. We do not get back up and VM information while doing backup for Veritas NetBackup. However, we don't face any problems after we stop and resume the update.
After we scheduled our protection plan, we didn't face any corrupted backup problems with Veritas NetBackup.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of Veritas NetBackup is the protection policies or protection module.
What needs improvement?
We cannot pause and resume via web GUI, web management, or network administration management; we do that via a CLI page. Once the protection plan is created, we cannot pause or resume via the web administration page.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Veritas NetBackup for seven years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We use Veritas NetBackup in three different locations and connect with a site-to-site VPN.
I rate Veritas NetBackup a seven out of ten for scalability.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support team's response time could be improved.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used Veeam Backup. We switched to Veritas NetBackup because we couldn't fix a corrupted backup chain while doing a snapshot backup with Veeam Backup. We had to remove and create our backup again, which was a lot of work.
How was the initial setup?
The solution’s initial setup is easy.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the solution through an integrator.
What was our ROI?
We have seen a return on investment with Veritas NetBackup.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Veritas NetBackup is more expensive than other backup solutions like Dell Power Protect and Veeam Backup.
What other advice do I have?
One person is enough to maintain the solution. After you set up and configure Veritas NetBackup, you don't have to maintain the solution that much. Veritas NetBackup is the best solution for a huge organization like ours, with three data centers, 3,000 virtual machines, and different DB servers.
Overall, I rate Veritas NetBackup an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

A user-friendly solution that can be used for backup and disaster recovery
Pros and Cons
- "Veritas NetBackup is very user-friendly and has some good quick recovery features."
- "The solution's technical support process should be improved."
What is our primary use case?
Our customers use Veritas NetBackup for backup and disaster recovery. The solution is used to back up operating systems, databases such as Oracle, SAP, and SAP HANA, and open-source databases such as Postgres and MongoDB.
How has it helped my organization?
Veritas NetBackup has been in the Turkish market for years. So, customers consider it to be a trusted and robust solution. It provides an entire solution and not just virtualization. Veritas NetBackup embraces many new open-source technologies, such as MongoDB and Postgres. Containerization is very crucial in our domain, and Veritas NetBackup works with many container technologies.
What is most valuable?
Veritas NetBackup is very user-friendly and has some good quick recovery features. The solution also provides some features via the cloud that may provide some good opportunities for our customers.
The most important thing for backup solutions is not just to back up the data but also to recover it quickly and correctly. Veritas NetBackup's recovery is very fast and quick for our customers.
What needs improvement?
Veritas NetBackup should be quicker than its competitors to pick up modern disruptive technologies. The solution's technical support process should be improved. The technical engineers' capability and experience should be improved.
They should add network acceleration by effectively using the network pathway.
They should support other backup technologies like Veeam. Our customers use more than one backup solution. In Turkey, people use both Veeam and NetBackup. Customers are trying to find just one backup storage solution that supports both Veeam and NetBackup software.
Since the Veritas NetBackup appliance doesn't support Veeam, customers have to find another solution that supports both NetBackup and Veeam software.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Veritas NetBackup since 1998.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Veritas NetBackup is a generally stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Since Veritas NetBackup appliances have some options for very, very big environments, there are no complaints about its scalability. Compared to solutions like Veeam, Veritas NetBackup is more robust and scalable. It's possible to increase the solution's capacity and functionalities based on the demands of our customers.
How are customer service and support?
Veritas NetBackup is a robust and mature solution. However, there is some latency with its support process. Sometimes, its support process takes a long time. Although we are talking to Veritas to improve their support process, it's still stable.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Veritas NetBackup is not difficult. Veritas NetBackup's initial setup is easy because it is a mature solution.
What about the implementation team?
Our team is very mature, and Veritas has local offices in Turkey with very competent engineers. So, if we have any problem during implementation, we submit it to Veritas support, and they help us by answering our questions. They are always with us if we need anything during the discussion or assessment stage. Their documentation is also very good and open. Our field experience, good documentation, and Veritas local support make the implementation easy.
The solution's deployment depends on how many clients will be backed up, not how big the environment is. For instance, our team will take one to two days for just one NetBackup appliance. However, setting up the requirements for the environment, like network, cables, and cooling, is important. The implementation can be done after this setup.
At least two people to three engineers are involved in the deployment process. We do a periodic check once every three months, which is crucial for all technology and not just Veritas NetBackup. The surveillance team at the customer's side always monitors the solution. Backup solutions should be monitored regularly. We currently provide level one and level two support. For level three support, we submit it to AWS.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Veritas NetBackup's pricing is somewhere between affordable and expensive. On a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate Veritas NetBackup's pricing a seven out of ten. Veritas NetBackup's price could be a problem for small businesses.
What other advice do I have?
Veritas NetBackup's strong point is that it embraces many technologies like SAP HANA, Oracle, and MSSQL. There are some add-ons for cloud pickups for Veritas in hyper-scale cloud environments like Google, Azure, and AWS. Effectiveness, best backup time, and best recovery time are predominant features of Veritas NetBackup.
Overall, I rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

What is our primary use case?
We are taking the whole NetBackup, including VMs, SQL databases, files, and storage backup.
How has it helped my organization?
We have purchased the appliance, so the backup speed is extremely high. NetBackup is simple to operate when configured correctly, ensuring smooth operation without constant monitoring. We replicate backups from the primary site to the disaster recovery site for restoration when needed.
What is most valuable?
The backup speed is extremely high and the simplicity of NetBackup is commendable. If configured correctly, it runs without problems. It is also notable for ensuring data availability and smooth replication to a disaster recovery site.
What needs improvement?
The web interface is not modern. However, we have been informed that in the new version, they will redesign the web version from the beginning.

We started with NetBackup Exec in 2005 or 2006, so it has been almost 20 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is rated ten out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is rated nine out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
When I open a case, someone from support connects to my system in less than two hours, and within the day, we solve everything if something appears.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive

You need help from someone who knows NetBackup very well. It is not a simple process with next, next, finish.
What about the implementation team?
Implementation assistance was provided by an integrator.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing depends. If you negotiate well with a company, you will have stable prices for many years. We have not noticed any unexpected price increases.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I haven't looked at anything else. We are very happy, and we are not looking for something else.
What other advice do I have?
We have multi-environment support for SAP, Linux, VMware, and physical computers. I would recommend this to other users.

Reliable, centralizes everything, and easily adjusts to future needs
Pros and Cons
- "We can easily expand the ability of the solution."
- "There may be a learning curve."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case for this solution is as a backup. We use virtual infrastructure and use it as a backup for the SQL server, for example. We provide solutions to different companies that are handling many releases and it's important to have backups for the infrastructure.
How has it helped my organization?
Sometimes there are bottlenecks in the backup infrastructure or there are some profile issues. If you have big infrastructure, you need to have a team and backup infrastructure in place in order to back up smaller sites and provide better, more efficient, solutions.
What is most valuable?
We can easily expand the ability of the solution.
It's great that we can have a backup for the server architecture.
It works with various solutions, including VMware, SolarWinds, and all the OS you can imagine.
The solution centralizes everything. I can do everything from one pane of glass.
If we want to, we can work with tape and make libraries for offline backups. We can do off-site backups and work with cloud services as well.
This is a solution you can rely on. You are sure when you have a backup. When you need to restore, it's always successful. There are no inconsistency issues.
It easily adjusts to your future needs. If you want to, you can easily change your license. You don't need to change your backup solution. It's also easy to add features.
What needs improvement?
There may be a learning curve. It can be a bit hard to understand when you are trying to figure out how it works. The interface could be a bit more user-friendly. It would be better if it were simpler. The process workflows when working with the solution could be easier as well.
There are a few things that could be improved from an administrator standpoint. If it could be possible to change a basic disk to an advanced disk without including the backup, for example, that would be ideal.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for about four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I'd rate the stability ten out of ten. It's very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have experience deploying the solution over a network of multiple sites.
There are a lot of endpoints. We have between 1,000 and 5,000 users - no more than that. We do work with servers.
The solution scales well. As long as you have the hardware, you are fine. I'd rate scalability nine out of ten. We're working with the solution more and more. We may expand usage.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support has taken care of us very well. I don't use them a lot, however. I tend to go to my colleagues to ask questions. Technical support is kind of a last resort.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I'm also familiar with Veritas Backup Exec. There are other solutions. However, they work in the background. We moved to this solution based on its reliability. It offers a better backup experience, and it works with our server infrastructure without any hesitation.
How was the initial setup?
I was involved with the implementation. We would have to devise retention policies and strategies for our backups. After we did that, we did a central setup and implementation. We also maintain the backups. If we ran into issues, we had a clear troubleshooting process. It was a bit complex. It would take us one to two days to deploy it.
We had two or three people involved in the deployment process. One person manages the strategy, and another checks everything and goes on to perform maintenance.
What about the implementation team?
I have some colleagues who are backup professionals, and I sometimes would ask them for assistance. There's a community out there that can help. However, my first step is to reach out to colleagues.
What was our ROI?
We do witness an ROI in regard to being able to avoid losing data. Fear of data loss no longer exists. When you invest in backups, you are investing in your most valuable assets.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product is expensive. That said, it's not meant for small businesses. It's for enterprises. You can add more features to it, and those cost more.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did evaluate other solutions. This offered good documentation that was quite accessible.
We did look into Commvault, which is an awesome tool. However, it had some limitations with accessibility and knowledge sharing.
What other advice do I have?
For this solution, I'm not very specialized. I am a technical manager. While I'm familiar with it, I do not specifically focus on the platform.
We are end users of the solution.
This is the top solution on the market.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. Others should not hesitate to use the solution. Once you have some experience, you'll like it.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Comes with integrated security and scalability and useful for backups
Pros and Cons
- "Disaster recovery primarily involves backup usage. We employ it for both backup and recovery purposes. The backup and recovery processes have been executed multiple times, even restoring data from backups created three to four years ago."
- "We are facing a challenge regarding the support for Docker and Kubernetes features. We hope for the possibility of directly backing up Kubernetes and Docker images without the necessity of taking full virtual machine backups."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for backup and recovery purposes. It serves as enterprise software and helps with virtualization environments, databases, and backups. It addresses our requirements for backups.
What is most valuable?
Disaster recovery primarily involves backup usage. We employ it for both backup and recovery purposes. The backup and recovery processes have been executed multiple times, even restoring data from backups created three to four years ago.
We use the deduplication feature in Veritas NetBackup. This feature helps us to compress the information, especially when utilizing appliances, helping with our storage usage. It has been very beneficial for us. The feature has resulted in significant space savings, especially when performing daily full backups for various applications.
The product itself includes all the necessary database and data security features. Initially associated with Symantec, even after being separated, it retains all its security capabilities independently.
What needs improvement?
We are facing a challenge regarding the support for Docker and Kubernetes features. We hope for the possibility of directly backing up Kubernetes and Docker images without the necessity of taking full virtual machine backups.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the product for ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable and we haven't encountered any instability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is scalable, and despite experiencing data growth of around 20 to 25 percent, we have been able to handle backups without encountering any issues. Currently, we have two resources working with Veritas NetBackup. However, they are not exclusively dedicated to NetBackup; they also manage different applications. We have about 400 endpoint servers.
How are customer service and support?
When needed, we open cases within our backup team. An engineer then troubleshoots the issues and responds to any required adjustments or additional information needed for the backup system.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup process was not complex. We have gone through it multiple times and performed updates on several occasions, making the process straightforward. The deployment process for Veritas NetBackup is straightforward. It involves setting up a master server and a media server.
You can assign both roles to a single server or keep them separate. Additionally, clients, representing the machines for which backups are needed, require the installation of a client component. Ensuring open communication ports is crucial for successful backup operations. If the implementation engineer is skilled, they can handle the deployment process independently.
It's not difficult to maintain Veritas NetBackup. Maintenance mainly involves upgrades; as long as there are no issues, it runs smoothly day and night. Regular upgrades are the only maintenance requirement for the system.
What was our ROI?
At times when data is needed and not available, it becomes a significant challenge in organizations. However, with Veritas NetBackup, we haven't faced such issues. Despite being relatively expensive, it is not as complex as some other solutions, providing value for money.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is expensive compared to other products.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Veritas NetBackup as it is relatively easy to manage and can serve as a single-vendor solution. If deployed correctly, it proves to be a good solution with integrated security and scalability. I rate it a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

A stable solution that offers both hardware and software and provides data protection features
Pros and Cons
- "The solution offers the hardware and the software at the same time."
- "The solution must provide a different way to schedule backups."
What is our primary use case?
Almost all customers use the product for backing up file systems, VMs, and Oracle or SQL databases. Our customers use the solution for data protection and managing the backups.
What is most valuable?
The solution offers the hardware and the software at the same time. It is the main advantage.
What needs improvement?
I do not like the way we currently schedule backups. The solution must provide a different way to schedule backups.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the product since 2010.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The tool is stable. I rate the stability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s scalability an eight out of ten.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have also worked with Metallic. I was a solution architect for the customer who migrated from Veritas NetBackup to Metallic. I also have experience with TSM and Data Protector. We manage the backups and data. The solution providers manage the backup infrastructure. All the solutions are great.
How was the initial setup?
If we do the deployment once, the second time will be easier. The number of people required for deployment depends on the environment and its size. One person is enough to deploy the solution if there is no hardware to deploy. Our customers use the solution in multiple locations. Our latest customer has two main data centers and branch offices worldwide. The tool requires maintenance. If there are some bugs or errors that the administrator cannot resolve, we contact support.
What other advice do I have?
I have experience as a backup administrator and solution architect. I do not know whether the solution has a SaaS version. Currently, the trend is to move to a SaaS-based backup solution. I would recommend the product to others. It is used by several customers. It is a good solution. Overall, I rate the product an eight out of ten.
