What is most valuable?

The desktop product is very fast. The troubleshooting is very good. It gives helpful logs and status codes so that we can troubleshoot more easily, especially compared to other products.

What needs improvement?

The cost is expensive.

The web detection and security features could be better. I'd like to see better malware detection.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with the solution since 2018.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I'd rate the stability ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is used in the data center only; it's not in multiple locations.

I'd rate the scalability ten out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've also worked with Commvault. The configuration and setup are very comfortable.

How was the initial setup?

If you use Veritas with Linux, the deployment is a bit more complex. Typically, we need a week to deploy the solution so that we have time to set up policies and so on. The setup can take anywhere from three days to a week.

We have two or three people that can be involved with the setup. However, typically, only one person is needed.

If the policies are applied well and the backup is done automatically, there are fewer problems and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a bit more expensive than other products. The licensing could always be more flexible.

What other advice do I have?

I'm very satisfied with the solution. I'm a reseller.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten. It's the best solution for backups. Its compatibility is great, and it can handle any workload. It's very tough; it works well to back up data centers.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Offers encryption for the backup and good stability
Pros and Cons
  • "We have a file server and our data file server, everything. We use it for VM server backup, too."
  • "We faced so many backup configuration issues. And from the Veritas side, they couldn't fix that issue. So we started from scratch, purchased everything, and then we configured everything. Therefore, the support could be better."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for the backup solution. It is a backup solution. We have a file server and our data file server, everything. We use it for VM server backup, too.

Normally, Veritas NetBackup is a shared service. We are a part of one of the companies in our group. So, it is a shared service. We are now looking for that. We are creating our own data center.

How has it helped my organization?

It is a test solution. So, we are using that with the encrypted format.

What is most valuable?

The solution offers encryption for the backup, so we prefer that.

What needs improvement?

We faced so many backup configuration issues. And from the Veritas side, they couldn't fix that issue. So we started from scratch, purchased everything, and then we configured everything. Therefore, the support could be better.

We purchased the latest storage and the temporary library, and now we are configuring everything ourselves.

In future releases, we are looking for an AI feature. Integrating AI would be beneficial because we are purchasing a separate solution for AI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. All the fixes and updates have been applied, so it's running smoothly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is okay.

How are customer service and support?

Customer service and support are good. We faced backup issues, and unfortunately, they couldn't resolve that issue. So, we had to seek support elsewhere. Then we decided to go for the same product again, which we purchased, and we are now configuring everything from scratch. This issue is related to the SQL side or server side, and some issues were not handled properly. So, the support is currently not satisfactory.

The backup kept failing, and the issue was not resolved. We sought support from the data side, but the issue persisted.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My previous company was using the HPE. Now, we are using Veritas here.

Moreover, Veritas meets our requirements cost-wise and technology-wise, so we prefer that.

What about the implementation team?

We used an integrator's help. They are also from our group, not from outside. They are from our group only, from our company.  They are coming, but they are doing the configuration part. So, there are two people involved in the deployment.

However, the deployment is still going on. We are supporting the integrator.  And it's almost 90% completed. So, the backups are running, and we need to install the agent on some remaining servers and integrate them.

The implementation strategy is good now. We need zero percent tolerance for the backup solutions. That's why we are doing it this way.

We handle maintenance from our side.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We compare Veritas with Zerto and HPE. It is a bit cheaper. So, we purchased Veritas for storage and the temporary library, and now we are configuring everything from scratch.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas is a cost-effective solution, and it meets our requirements. So it's not bad.

Despite some disadvantages in terms of support, I would rate the solution a ten out of ten.

A stable and versatile product that is compatible with many platforms
Pros and Cons
  • "What I like most is it is a professional product. It supports all kinds of technologies, and I consider it one of the best backup products available."
  • "NetBackup is a very old product, and it is based on Linux, which is not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use Veritas NetBackup for backing up and restoring data, but primarily to restore data backed up with NetBackup. I primarily do maintenance for end users who need me to back up their servers.

What is most valuable?

Veritas NetBackup is currently one of the most professional products in the area. It is compatible with my features, and what I like most is it is a professional product. It supports all kinds of technologies, and I consider it one of the best backup products available. Its versatility and compatibility with multiple systems are its best features.

I am particularly impressed by its compatibility and the granular backup and restore options. The storage connection is also excellent. NetBacku’s compatibility, stability, and catalog management capabilities are what stand out the most.

I like that the solution is compatible with many features and technologies. Specific strengths include granular backup and restore, as well as compatibility with storage, along with its stability and the way it catalogs data.

What needs improvement?

Veritas NetBackup is a very old product, but it is based on Linux, which is not user-friendly. Although they have made some improvements in GUI to provide a more user-friendly interface, the web interface could be better organized and easier to use. It is not really suitable for anyone without strong knowledge of the product, which is its main disadvantage. So the user interface (UI) is the main area for improvement.

UI feels a bit outdated, like an application from the '90s, due to its Java-based design. Additionally, because NetBackup's roots are in Linux, the best way to work with it is through commands. The current web interface is still somewhat outdated, and there are limitations compared to what can be done with the command line. That's why managing it without strong knowledge can be challenging.

Though they have a GUI to make things easier, it would be better to improve the GUI and the web interface by making them more organized and easier for anyone to use the products without a strong knowledge of the product.

For additional features, I could give one example. Veritas Protection and Veritas NetBackup are somehow integrated but obviously cannot be one product. If they were one product, it would be much better. So, like if it merged with SaaS protection and became one product.

For how long have I used the solution?

The first time I used NetBackup was when I was training with Veritas was actually around 2018. Prior to that, I supported Veritas products such as Backup Exec. I joined Veritas when they split from Symantec. Initially, I worked with Backup Exec and DLP. Then, in 2018, I received training for Veritas NetBackup. We are currently using version 9.1.

I'm an administrator who supports NetBackup. So, I'm essentially a backup administrator. My job is to manage NetBackup. In my previous experience, I provided support for various Veritas products. Currently, I have a good understanding of many of the policies due to that support. Primarily, I manage three Veritas products: NetBackup, Enterprise Vault, and DLP. What I do involves backing up and managing restrictions at my agency, and they have chosen Veritas products. I'm the right person to manage these products.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability at least an eight. In my opinion, it's one of the best products in the market. I've encountered various products, and in terms of stability, NetBackup is top-notch because it is mainly based on Linux. It can be used in both Linux and Windows servers.

In Linux, it's very, very stable. However, when installed on Windows servers, the problems tend to increase, and stability may decrease. So, eight seems like a reasonable rating overall. The roots of Veritas NetBackup are very very stable. However, when you interact with the user interface or perform configurations, sometimes the GUI may appear a bit glitchy. That will not affect your backups, but it might affect what you are trying to do.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very very scalable because, even with a product like SaaS Protection, NetBackup has integration with them, so you can scale it.

My agency is an enterprise business. We currently back up hundreds of servers, both virtual and physical.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and support team is good. The support is straightforward and always available. However, one issue I have with the support is that they follow specific guidelines. If your environment doesn't match their guidelines, you might face some difficulties. So, that's a minor downside of their support, but it's also their right to do so.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The installation is not difficult. It's more about the recurrent operations, the command lines. The installation process itself is straightforward if you follow the steps and have a basic understanding of what you're doing. It's an easy-to-install product and also supports multiple platforms.

When you have multiple installations, you will need to set up the agents on the clients, but for product installation on the server, half an hour should be plenty to have the minimum preparation and to launch it. But to set up the environment, it wouldn’t be half an hour; it would take more time depending on what you are trying to back up.

NetBackup is not a user-based application, so I don’t have many deployments; it is just deployed at my agency. If we have been requested to update to a new server or upgrade the application, in which case I would have to update the clients as well, it might take longer to do that, but that can all be handled by one person.

The solution will require maintenance because you will have problems with the backups: there will be sensitive things that you need to monitor because you will have all kinds of issues, even if they are not related to NetBackup. It depends highly on the client. Maintenance here is about backups, not the application. The application maintenance itself would be the upgrades. Otherwise, it works well if there is no problem with any of the clients. When I say clients, I only mean the OS or the application where the solution is running that we want to back up.

What about the implementation team?

The agency I work with handles deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive. I would rate the solution an eight of ten, with one being cheap and ten being expensive.

We have an unlimited license with NetBackup, with support for upgrades. Mainly, the product itself is a one-time purchase, and then there will be more for support, maintenance, or other additional features that you will have to pay for, and it will not be forever.

What other advice do I have?

For a recommendation, I absolutely recommend it as the best product that I know for the backup world, and why I'm saying it's the best is because it's very, very responsive, and very scalable. And personally, I have had good experiences with the support, and also I'm very familiar with Veritas. But mostly, it's because you can back up your environment safely with Veritas NetBackup.

The best way to use the solution is with commands since they have roots in Linux. The current web interface is still outdated, and you cannot do many things in the web interface that you can do with the command line.

If you don't have a strong knowledge of the solution, it will be hard to manage.

Otherwise, the product is very versatile and scalable that allows you to back up your environments easily, and I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Helps to backup and restore servers and applications
Pros and Cons
  • "The tool's most valuable feature is backups."
  • "The product needs to improve its GUI. It needs to make use of a web interface."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product to backup and restore servers and applications.

What is most valuable?

The tool's most valuable feature is backups.

What needs improvement?

The product needs to improve its GUI. It needs to make use of a web interface.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the product for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We rarely have issues with the product. The last major issue happened when our infrastructure went down. I rate its stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is scalable. It is a straightforward process, and you don't need any training. I rate it an eight out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with SolarWinds before. It focuses on server uptime.

How was the initial setup?

The tool's deployment is straightforward and gets completed in months.

What about the implementation team?

A vendor helped us with the deployment.

What other advice do I have?

After uploading servers and applications to the Veritas NetBackup application, we schedule backups to run when our applications are least active, ensuring that resources are available for the backup process. Additionally, we perform quarterly restores to validate the integrity of our backups, ensuring that all data backed up in each month of the quarter can be successfully restored.

We have backups in three different environments. We have a retention policy for our backups, typically set to three months. We also have a policy to archive the backups to our library. Even after the three-month retention on the media server, we keep a copy in our ADAP environment, which retains data for longer.

Recently, we encountered an issue where most of our DR environment went offline, resulting in the loss of several servers. Fortunately, we had the catalog from Veritas NetBackup, which allowed us to restore our environment quickly. Instead of reinstalling everything from scratch, we could pick up where we left off by restoring the backups in different environments.

New users can search for the product online, read what they want to do, and do it on their own. I rate it a nine out of ten.

Reliability ensures disaster recovery and offers good compliance
Pros and Cons
  • "The reliability is valuable, especially for the appliance solution."
  • "The ease of use needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I mostly use it for disaster recovery and secondly for compliance reasons.

What is most valuable?

The reliability is valuable, especially for the appliance solution. Additionally, the resilience features help guard against threats such as ransomware.

What needs improvement?

The ease of use needs improvement. Specifically, the interface poses a challenge for newcomers, and the support used to be good, but it has declined in quality.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it since 2012, which makes it 12 or 13 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The upgrade process used to have issues, mainly a couple of years back. Because of that bad experience, I rate them a nine out of ten. They have made efforts to fix those issues, and during my last upgrade, we did not have any problems.

How are customer service and support?

Their support quality has declined. I would rate it a six out of ten now, whereas it used to be a nine out of ten about two or three years ago.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the initial setup a ten, but I have sufficient knowledge of the solution. Typically, I can have it up and running in a day. For the backups to reach a stable state, it usually takes two weeks since NetBackup runs at night, and I have to address any issues the next day.

What other advice do I have?

I would  recommend it to other users due to my thirteen years of experience. It delivers every time when properly configured. It performs well during crises.

The documentation available, especially on YouTube, is sparse compared to other vendors.

I give the solution an eight out of ten.

Responsive support, simple data backup, and useful cloud options
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature from Veritas NetBackup is the data is very easy to backup. It is similar to VMware. They recently introduced a cloud feature that is useful."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veritas NetBackup to backup our SAP servers.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature from Veritas NetBackup is the data is very easy to backup. It is similar to VMware. They recently introduced a cloud feature that is useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas NetBackup for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veritas NetBackup is a scalable solution.

Our IT department is only using Veritas NetBackup.

How are customer service and support?

The support we have received from Veritas NetBackup has been very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Veeam previously and is the best backup solution.

    How was the initial setup?

The implementation of Veritas NetBackup is very difficult because we have two types of data storage, one is a regular disk and the other is a tape drive. We are using both. Installing each and every service on the servers, licensing for each in the servers, certifications, and connecting takes a long time.

It took us almost two months to fully implement Veritas NetBackup.

    What about the implementation team?

We had help from a partner do the implementation of Veritas NetBackup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Veritas NetBackup is high, it should be reduced.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated other solutions, such as VMware and it is less expensive then Veritas NetBackup. The cost of the solution depends upon how much space you are going to take it. For one TB, it costs almost 190 SR. For maintenance and for a new additional deployment it cost approximately 150 to 170 SR.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas NetBackup I would not recommend, because it's too expensive as for the current implementation.

I rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

Solid basic backup and recovery; somewhat antiquated
    Pros and Cons
    • "Veritas NetBackup is very stable and scales out very well."
    • "The biggest additional features needed are more cloud capabilities and security from ransomware."

What is our primary use case?

The use cases for customers are across the board, but they're all for data backup. Veritas is a legacy system. To be perfectly honest, a lot of people are moving away from the legacy systems and moving more towards the cloud-oriented backup solutions. A lot of my customers look at Veritas NetBackup as an antiquated solution.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are basic backup and recovery. It's a very solid product. Standard backup recovery, that's pretty much it. Other than that, they do some good database stuff, but otherwise, it's somewhat antiquated.

    What needs improvement?

One area for improvement with the product would be better messaging and better solutions around cloud, both on-prem and off. And along with that, which is actually mission critical to every company today, would be ransomware prevention.

The biggest additional features needed are more cloud capabilities and security from ransomware.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with the solution for the last fifteen years. I'm a solutions architect. I work with customers to help them design their solutions or improve their current situation.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Veritas NetBackup is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution actually scales out very well.

How are customer service and support?

I'd give the technical support team a B to a B+. They've always been good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Most companies that have moved to NetBackup were probably on a even older architecture, something that might have been from IBM, NetView. NetView was even an older architecture, it was very difficult to use, and a lot of people moved away from IBM NetView over to Veritas.

    How was the initial setup?

Veritas is a pretty straightforward initial setup. It's not difficult to install.

The deployment times vary depending upon how widely it's going to be used, how many backup instances are going to be, how many policies you have to create for recovery time objectives, recovery point objectives. It's all relative to how many policies the customers have, for retention cycles, for backup recovery, as well as archive and disaster recovery. Some can be deployed in a day, others take weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Most people have felt this solution was somewhat expensive. It's licensed for 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, all the way up to 72 months. As long as you're current on maintenance, everything is included and there are no additional costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Sometimes we would look at other options before going with Veritas NetBackup. For example, Backup Exec, which is like a sister product of NBU, and they were really for smaller size companies. Commvault was another one that we were looking at.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking at this solution would be make sure it meets all of your requirements. Do you have an on-prem, off-prem, cloud requirement? Do your homework to make sure that whatever product you're looking at meets all the requirements that you need.

I would rate the solution a seven out of ten. It's a very rock solid product, but I wouldn't give it a 10, because it doesn't have some of the newer features of the newer products. But it is a solid product.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises
