Enhancing cloud infrastructure with dynamic resource allocation and regional flexibility
Pros and Cons
  • "Amazon EC2 allows us to create different regions and availability zones based upon application needs."
  • "The process of detaching EC2 instances to avoid billing could be less complex."

What is our primary use case?

I am working for a company where we are doing a cloud migration. We are moving from on-premises to cloud, and we are using EC2 for the infrastructure.

How has it helped my organization?

Amazon EC2 is tied up with cloud advantages such as cost reduction and managed services by the cloud provider. It allows us to provision infrastructure on demand.

What is most valuable?

Amazon EC2 allows us to create different regions and availability zones based upon application needs. We can deploy nodes closer to customers, like creating a zone near the UK for UK customers. We can also scale up or down the instances on the fly. EC2 provides horizontal scalability, and we can increase hardware resources dynamically as needed.

What needs improvement?

In terms of cost, Amazon could reduce the pricing. The process of detaching EC2 instances to avoid billing could be less complex. For connecting environments, encryption and other features need to be managed, which could be simplified.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There are various factors that can cause breakdowns, but Amazon provides disaster recovery features managed by the cloud itself, and you can select alternative regions in case of a disaster.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Amazon EC2 provides great scalability by allowing us to increase instances during peak traffic times and decrease them when not needed. We can dynamically provision resources such as CPU and memory.

How are customer service and support?

I didn't face any major issues with technical support, as we have Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in place, and I would rate them as eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is user-friendly and can be handled by one person. A few hours is usually sufficient for installation.

What about the implementation team?

One person is sufficient to install and configure the EC2 instances.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is a concern as it's considered a bit expensive. With more vendors like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform entering the space, pricing may normalize in the future due to competition.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Amazon's competitors include Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, among others, which are becoming more popular for their own unique features.

What other advice do I have?

AI is becoming increasingly integrated. There may be a future where AI simplifies the processes that currently require manual scripting or console-driven actions.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

A solution to deploy instances and application with flexible pricing

What is our primary use case?

I utilize a workstation within EC2.

How has it helped my organization?

It is important to provide good advice on where to start. We focus on the documentation. The documentation for each product is the initial step for beginning to use its capabilities. The main thing is usability of the product. In the process of implementing, you need to spend time learning about the tool, understanding, and its restrictions.

What needs improvement?

The solution could be more stable and have more integration.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Amazon EC2 for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable. I rate the solution’s stability a five out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support is provided via tickets and calls. It's an organization that provides comprehensive information.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What about the implementation team?

We have automatically deploy from GitHub.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay for the service that we have. One person might use one product for ten seconds, while another might use the same service for 24 hours. Consequently, the billing will differ, depending on availability.

You can access a new service. Additionally, there are various payment options available for the full service. In some cases, you can even bring your own license, depending on the agreement you choose to use with the system.

What other advice do I have?

I advise you to learn about the cloud and web services.

Depending on the customer's configuration, we need to consider whether we are using a team with 32 gigabytes or 16 gigabytes It's essential to address any limitations in speed or capacity caused by these configurations. For instance, if more data is being generated, we may need to upgrade the device or find alternative solutions to improve the service. Scaling up the service might involve a separate discussion from performance or tool considerations.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon EC2's initial setup was complex. However, if we compare it to other virtual machines, Amazon EC2's setup is simple.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment with Amazon EC2 because it is cheaper than running a data center.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Amazon EC2 is a very expensive solution.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the latest version of Amazon EC2. Amazon EC2 is deployed in our organization on cloud. If you know you will use a virtual machine for a long time, it is better to have Amazon EC2 as a reserve, which will be way cheaper.

Overall, I rate Amazon EC2 an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

We have never needed technical support since the documentation is usually sufficient.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used Fargate before. However, it wasn't sufficient for our needs due to certain limitations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. I would rate it as ten out of ten. We follow our deployments via code, which is automated.

What about the implementation team?

We handle deployment internally with just one person running the pipeline.

What was our ROI?

The main value we have gained is the ability to consistently service our customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are paying about $1,500 a month for one of the services. I'd rate the pricing as six out of ten for being expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have not considered alternate solutions since everything we do is on AWS, and we couldn't think of leaving AWS.
