The ability to configure rules to check for consistency has helped
Apiary provides a free tier of the platform which allows a small group of developers to collaborate easily on the design of open source APIs. In addition to this, it provides mock endpoints allowing people to experiment with the API without depending or having to stand up a real backend. With our clients, using Apiary allows us to very quickly pull together an API definition (particularly when using API Blueprint). The whole API design process for the simpler use cases can be done in a relatively short workshop which makes it a lot easier to agree, publish, version-manage an API definition with suitable documentation. This can then be evolved and enhanced (particularly in the documentation aspects). With the ability to support Swagger (Open API v2 and introducing/ed support for v3) and API Blueprint makes it a very versatile tool.
Integration capabilities excel and support for varied platforms enhances communication across backend systems
We mainly use REST APIs, and the solution's integration capabilities are excellent. It allows communication with a number of back-end providers and data consolidation. The flexibility to develop APIs for various platforms, from front-end applications to ATM machines, is valuable. Code changes and migration are straightforward, and it supports identity and access management integration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I find the generation of mock services very useful, especially when demonstrating for new consumers."
"This solution has allowed us to standardize API definitions and bring consistency into our shared components, reducing the effort and cost of using functionality across domains within the organization, with Apiary being crucial to our good API strategy."
"I do like the overall performance of the solution."
"Quick and easy way to share a new API design with teams."
"In two years, there was one time the service was down for an hour or so."
"Git integration"
"The feature I find most valuable is that it offers authentication and allows us to develop communication points."
"Vey high - very easy API design with no setup effort"
"The Mobile SSO functionality is not available with most similar products in the market, which makes this a unique product."
"The simple REST based APIs can now be delivered in hours which took days previously."
"I work for an information security company. CA API Management is capable of using tokens for authorization to manage access control for the APIs."
"There are many things, which are really good, like the Gateway; that's really great and pretty useful, and the Mobile API Gateway is also great."
"Layer7 is the most important step in our Application Modernization strategy."
"I would certainly recommend using this product."
"In my opinion, CA API Gateway in that security space is very ideal and it's one of the best out there."
"There are a few assertions which are built-in for threat protection. I have used them for vulnerabilities, like for DDoS attacks, XML schema validation, IP restriction, and for cross-domain."

Cons

"I don't think this solution is very stable so we try to manage stability from our side."
"The Oracle release cycle is very bad because the patches only update once a year."
"I would like an integrated option to download a Swagger version of the definition."
"Swagger (OpenAPI Specification) and Blueprint Support"
"Validation messages could be a bit clearer."
"Better Swagger support."
"Following Layer7's acquisition of Broadcom, the technical support and sales teams have not been good and both those areas need to be improved."
"The overall cost of Layer7 API Management is high, they can improve it by making it less expensive."
"The interface should be improved."
"The Policy Manager UI is very busy."
"One day, where we can have a microservices gateway and we will not need the classic gateway at all, that is what we want to see."
"As well as the SOA Gateway - that is, the API Gateway; we call it the SOA Gateway - we also are now deploying the developer portal component of the SOA Gateway. That has limitations."
"One specific feature that we need is the ability to authenticate directly to the server with API data. It's not complex nowadays. This is a feature that we need and CA doesn't have it."
"The development toolkit used for creating APIs should be more online and user-friendly. Deployment and tracking could also be improved. Tools like Apigee provide a complete online experience along with RESTful APIs, to manage all activities. It is a very nice and user-friendly solution compared to CA."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is easy to get started with personal (free) accounts, but a subscription is required for additional features."
"There is a free subscription option to start and try the service."
"For what we are after, the pricing is okay. It is competitive."
"Pricing for Layer7 API Management is excellent, so it's an eight out of ten. The product is less expensive than other solutions. Layer7 API Management charges you based on the number of transactions, so the enterprise-level pricing my company got was excellent."
"At the time we bought the product it was a perpetual users license and there has been no need for additional licensing fees."
"It was very high at that time. We are a Broadcom CA partner, and we got it only for testing purposes. We didn't pay anything for it."
"It's my manager who takes care of the pricing. But I keep on hearing that it's a little pricey, it's on the higher side. That is what he says."
"I do not have experience with the pricing or licensing of the product."
"APIs can be developed to provide security. We can show them in one single pane of glass, such as the CA API Management API Developer Portal. It is there that we can provide the monetization for their APIs and what is happening on third-party applications, like Paytm or BookMyShow."
"I think it's competitive. It's not that expensive when you compare CA with the Oracle product."
