Enabling efficient management with quick deployment and cost-effective solutions while needing improved support
I assess the value of Arcserve Backup's integration with multiple operating systems to be effective only for deploying the agent, as we deploy the agent and take the backup from the backup server only. I face no issues in terms of integration with Arcserve Backup. I do use Arcserve Backup's deduplication and compression features. These features help optimize storage resources by erasing duplicate data from the storage, so if we have two or three TB storage, it will take backup around three to four months. Regarding the disaster recovery feature of Arcserve Backup, we only do a simple one server disaster recovery feature. In terms of hybrid deployment scenarios, we have mostly done this in a Windows environment, with a small amount done in Linux. On a scale from one to ten, I rate Arcserve Backup a nine.

Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Arcserve Backup positively impacts the organization by providing a simple managed backup solution that is not complex, making it easy to manage and configure; that is the best feature I can describe."
"The most valuable feature of Avamar would have to be the way it works over needing very little bandwidth to move data across a WAN or LAN."
"The solution is easy to use and has high performance."
"The solution is very stable."
"The most valuable feature for me is the backup functionality; it gives large enterprises the comfort of knowing their workloads are being backed up."
"I like that the solution integrates well with the different platforms that we have, Unix, Windows, Hyper-V and VM, as not all the solutions do that."
"The installation process is pretty straightforward."
"Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable; we're doing more than 3,000 VMs, and every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours."
"Technical support for this solution was great."

Cons

"I have noticed that support needs to improve in Arcserve Backup."
"Avamar is still competitive because of the way we have deployed it, but we need to diversify and shift away from specific technologies. In addition to hypervisors, virtual machines, and bare metal servers, our customers need protection for Microsoft 365, SaaS, and the public cloud, so we need other technologies in the business to cater to those customers' needs. Those are the enhancements we would want from the Avamar platform, but that's not likely to happen. Dell has PowerProtect and Apex backup services. There are other Dell solutions that we'll use to fulfill our customers' requirements."
"What would make Dell Avamar better is if it can do faster backups because right now, PowerProtect Data Manager is better in this area with its new UI and a new way to implement backups."
"If you want to set up integration with a cloud environment, for example, it's very difficult to do that. Avamar doesn't work very well in the cloud environment."
"The product could offer more integration capabilities."
"What would make Dell Avamar better is if it can do faster backups because right now, PowerProtect Data Manager is better in this area with its new UI and a new way to implement backups. Customers nowadays also expect more up-to-date solutions, and this is another area for improvement in Dell Avamar. It's not as up-to-date, so I'm counting on PowerProtect Data Manager, but customers who have Dell Avamar don't want to switch because you don't have as many backup problems in Dell Avamar compared to other solutions. What I'd like to see in the next release of Dell Avamar is an updated UI and a different way to manage backups because currently, backup management is a bit heavy for customers using Dell Avamar."
"There are two areas for improvement I would suggest. First, some integrations are not in place, such as the email alerts, which are not compatible with Office 365 SMTP gateway."
"The scalability is limited right now."
"If you need to pull data out of it to offload to tapes, that's messy. You have a mechanism for it, but it is painful."

"On a scale of one to five, I would rate the pricing policy of Dell Avamar as five. The solution has a very good price, and a lot of improvements were done to it."
"There is a license required for this solution."
"The solution is costly."
"It might not be beneficial to smaller businesses due to its high cost."
"It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
